Antique Pfluger Baitcaster Reel 1960 Will It Work? Can I Use it?

I always keep the clicker off when casting my vintage baitcasters. It adds too much drag to the cast. Your rod is actually not a bad rod. It just need a new cork grip and maybe some polishing of the line guides. I use these old baitcasters for fishing bullheads and catfish and they perform very well. All my vintage baitcasters are spooled with the old school braided nylon because the reels were originally designed for that line. It casts way more efficiently than monofilament line.

@ I think you are suppose to take it off drag when you cast or retrieve. The drag tells you a fish is on your line.

My 11yo son was just given a Pflueger Nobby No 1939 reel yesterday. It works great, but it also doesn't have a freespool lever. I think we'll save it for dropping straight down off a canoe in deeper water. If you turn off the clicker, it should cast a little further because the clicker adds resistance to the spool spinning. Honestly, I never got good with baitcasters, and I almost always fish with spinning and fly gear.

I have a few of these things, it's all my dad fishes with since he was a kid . If you know a good machinist you can super tune it with bearings . I have a old Shakespeare Marhoff from 1964 that's super tuned it's so nice .

I tried to fix an old bait caster I found but it didn't go as well as I thought. Got it spinning so I put new line on and it still won't cast with my heaviest lures on it

@@BudgetGuyrc1967 I've tried it with a few old ones completely taken apart soaked to clean and oiled still wouldn't cast so I ended up caving and buying a new one it doesn't look as nice as the old schools but it works great

Heck yeah you threw it out like a boss and the reel still works great. It might be a good catfish reel but like you said that rod has seen better days.I wonder if you're suppose to loosen the tension till your lure/bait starts to trickle to the ground. I think the clicking sound would drive me nuts after using it for a day. I was hoping to see the reel blow up lol. Thanks for sharing brother

Turn the clicker off when casting....the clicker is for carrying the rod and reel and when for being notified by a giant running catfish!

Those old reels when refurbished and put on a newer rod are excellent budget rigs. Much better than buying a low-end real and rod from a department store.

Try turning off the clicker. Quiet and smooth and will cast a lot further.
