Science geek here. The word “rust” only applies to iron and the binoculars are not made from iron.

Not rust but copper sulphate formation occurs. We have traditional brass items which survived for atleast 3 generations. This is quiet common and removed using citric acid from lemon or tartaric acid from tamarind. These mild food grade acid just cleans the surface and doesn't corrode the metal.

I wonder what type of restoration some of these viewers who are negative would have done. I think you did what had to be done and the result was right on. I enjoyed watching it be restored. Thank you

You can get these in India. There are plenty of good brass artists in uttar pradesh state. Moradabad is most famous for brass works. You would even find other masterpieces of brass art there.

Someone on here wrote, that you didn't restore the binoculars, you "just" cleaned them. I can see that you put in effort, and gave it a nice try, good on you for that, but it's not a restoration job, unless you restore the parts that are broken, scratched, bend, or otherwise damaged. And we never saw them work after you were done. I think you can do better, but keep at it.

One of the worst restoration ever seen. Not authentic leather… and the sanding brass…. Damaged. This not a quality restoration at all

You were right. Very crude and very incomplete. It was painful to watch.

Not authentic leather isn't a mistake at all. Many binoculars dating from the end of the 19th century and the first part of 20th century used false leather (often a kind of strong, waterproofed paper). The problem here is the color. These kind of binoculars were mainly used by the military, hence they were entirely black. Here, they look like binoculars used in theatres...
@daniell.43083 ай бұрын
@@laurentdevaux5617 my opinion is not only based in non authentic leather. The brushing, polishing, cutting technique… all the process results in a bad restoration.
@K3B5243 ай бұрын

Nice job, because these binoculars were really in bad shape. But the result is totally unrealistic. This kind of binoculars were mainly used by the military from the end of the 19th century until the end of WW1 and beyond, they are not binoculars used in theatres. All metallic parts should have been painted with a black, glossy lacquer and the leather used should have been black as well. You can still easily find such binoculars on flea markets for a few euros, often pretty well preserved and with their case. Personnally, except if it was a rare model, if I had seen these binoculars on a flea market, I would never buy them...
