I guess that the US Army used camels as pack animals before the civil war. They were particularly useful in the southwest as they could handle long desert drives with minimal need for water. I also read somewhere that they were unaffected by the spines of cactus and could eat them without trouble. They were often referred to as the 'ships of the desert' probably because of the burden they could bare. After when the civil war broke out, the 'camel experiment' was abandoned and what was left of them were let to roam the southwest. Apparently, these beasts could occasionally be seen by travelers as late as the 1940s. Dee Brown wrote a novel titled: "The Way To Bright Star" involving camels during the civil war. Maybe this is part of the west's reason for the interest in the middle east?

That’s a great story! They made a movie loosely based on it in the 70s, bad movie but it made my dad explain the real story. I think the real reason for 1920s interest was King Tut’s discovery though

Good evening, George. The Steuben perfume bottle caught my eye. That was a pretty one. I liked the Roseville _Moss_ piece. That would be a pattern I could see myself collecting. I'd definitely pay $95.00 for that Ohio glass table set. That fits right in with my line of interest in sets. I have a green Northwood table set, in the _Peaches and Cable_ pattern, with the gold. Those high-top ladies shoes reminded me of a pair of the button-up one here that mom had collected. The display case, next to the oak sideboard, really caught my eye. If I had space, I'd have things like that all over the house...and likely fill them with beverage sets 😂 That was a nice oak occasional table next to the swivel desk chair. I liked the R. A. Fox sheep print there. There was a platter on the bottom shelf where the Korean backpack was, with two elk "dueling" on it. I actually have one like that. Loved the celluloid photo album. There're still a couple things here mom got with S & H Green Stamps. I liked that stamp roller. That was a fantastic mall, with a lot of interesting items! Thanks for taking us along!
@TheAntiqueNomadАй бұрын
Hi there! I'm sorry I missed this comment during my travels. I really like Steuben and think it's rather undervalued at present. The table set was nice, I should've gotten it for you! High button shoes fascinate me, what a rigamarole to get dressed for women back then. Love all the Fox prints! My mom got her scale at S&H, one of those oval ones from 1970 but it's long gone. I'm glad you had fun at this one!
@CONSTELLATION_PEGASUSАй бұрын
@@TheAntiqueNomad I'm just now getting notification of your reply to my comment. Ohhh...if you had gotten the table set for me, I'd be struggling to find a spot to put it 😂 I have a Consolidated Glass _Cosmos_ table set that's in a box, in a closet, right now...nowhere to put it...yet. If I'd been there, though, I know I'd have never been able to resist getting that set. If I remember correctly, there might actually be some unused S & H Green Stamps still here...somewhere...in a drawer. I need to see if I can locate them.

George, do you have a tip or technique on how to focus on individual items at a thrift or antique store. I find that these stores are so full of stuff, shelves are stuffed and so much to see that I have a difficult time focusing on individual items. I get concerned I will miss something of resale value. I know that some resellers are able to scan and pick out the good stuff, you seem like one of those, but there are those of us that do have trouble when the stores are so packed full. Thanks for your advice. Love your channel!
@TheAntiqueNomad2 ай бұрын
I hear this a lot! My suggestion is pick one type of thing you really like and just do that section, then go another time and look at another section. Take time and be thorough, handle things, etc. you’ll eventually know what’s common and you’ve seen and can skip, then it gets faster

Love watching you and I’ll keep doing it BUT the background music is unnecessary and slightly distracting. I understand trying new things and it seems like KZbin is pushing some of my favorite resellers to expand to the point that they’re practically killing themselves trying new things. Anyway George you are enough without a soundtrack.
@TheAntiqueNomad2 ай бұрын
Hi! I’m glad to hear that, I use music generally just in beginning end and when I ask for support. I hear from KZbin that less is more so we’ll mostly keep it down. (Sometimes it’s because we have to cover up copyrighted music on the background too.)
@TheAntiqueNomad2 ай бұрын
I agree people are feeling pushed. Your comment helps KZbin know we’re doing stuff, which helps us do better with a reasonable amount of work instead of going crazy.

You decide to do a KZbin channel, you get paid. don't ask for money.
@TheAntiqueNomadАй бұрын
KZbin actually puts a lot of pressure on us to ask for memberships, and we do give additional perks in exchange for that. I figure it's like PBS, no one has to give a dime to get a lot of free information, but it's okay to ask, and I shall continue to do so. As for us getting paid, that fluctuates a lot and is not guaranteed in any way, many KZbin channels get little or no money from KZbin at all.
