I did a one-year course in England in 2004-05, “The Restoration and Conservation of Antique English Furniture”. I experienced the feeling of working on a piece of furniture made by someone’s hands in ca. 1760. The piece was a chair made of cherry wood. It was in terrible shape, worm eaten, broken joints, light damaged. Really, it was ready to be broken apart and burned in the fireplace. I worked on it for several weeks to restore it. I didn’t get a good grade, but that chair is in somebody’s house in England with a new life.

OK, some of you don't seem to have grasped that this is a 16 year old recording and, as such, it does not reflect current pricing for these types of antiquites - with the increasing numbers of very wealthy Chinese buying back their treasures, it might be comfortably into the 7 figure range is it came onto the market. As has been pointed out, marble is a strong, resistant material and is relatively impervious to handling damage.

Surprisingly, you can get lots of finely carved Tang Dynasty pottery sculptures online for just a few thousand bucks. And no, I don't mean ebay - you can get them from reputable art galleries and even TL test them in the lab for authenticity. Marble is just a rarer material which is why it costs in that range, but >1000 year old artifacts are not at all rare.

What never ceases to amaze me, is the amount of people who "would never sell" their item. I sincerely appreciate that they prefer to keep the item, since they don't need the money. But then I also realize... Wow. They have no need for $100.000 ~ 250.000. For most people, including myself, that would allow me to buy a house (aka gain financial wealth that can be passed on through generations of the family. And can be built upon by next generations. Much like this lady's family had probably done... Which is why she can afford to keep the item). But yeah. It still surprises me sometimes. . How the exact same sum of money can be literally life-changing to one person, ..and at the same time be a sum that another person can afford to lose (or 'have on the shelf') But good for her :) She seems like a nice lady, and I can imagine that she wants to keep the lion. Not only because of the link to her family, but also because it looks cool. I love the styling - the intense muscles, the portruding vertebrae on its back. And the weird human-like teeth. I guess that's something artists realized a few hundred years later - that lions have pointy teeth. There's an old gate here in Amsterdam - "de Brakke Grond" - from the 1600s. That gate / portal has sculptures of 3 lion heads on it - all of which have a super straight human-like row of teeth :) . It's slightly creepy because of those teeth. Haha ;)

I would not want to keep an item worth that much for it to be stolen or destroyed in an earthquake. I would sell it and give my progeny the money instead or maybe even college funds or down payment help for a house etc. This stuff is for rich people to keep (where they have it insured etc.).

It's been through more than a few earthquakes already, and it's marble, after all. I would rather have it in the house to enjoy than take the money. Theft would be a problem, but you'd need somebody pretty knowledgable to steal it. Insurance would be a good idea.

Seems to put a huge target on your back. I would sell it. Not worth the effort to secure/keep safe or the danger of having something that valuable.
