For me this song is an expression of the genuine love you feel in platonic relationships and the shame or lack of reciprocation that comes with those completely natural feelings. In society we are told it’s weird to love people other than family or partners, but love flows naturally out of humans until they are taught otherwise. And this song explains the relationship between a human who is in tune with that natural flow and another who was taught to sever their connection to that kind of love.

I just stumbled across Andy's music today. Thought he was a woman tell I found out otherwise. Lovely arrangements and production values. I get a comforting "you've heard this before" vibe while still sounding fresh. Incredibly sincere sounding and legit as hell. I love this man. Very wise beyond his years.💛

ANDY SHAUF To You Jeremy can we talk a minute? I've got some things that I need to get off of my chest. I know that we've had a few and it's far too late but if I wait I might never tell you. Can we find somewhere quiet? Let's go outside, I've got some smokes if you've got a light. It's just that sometimes when I'm by your side, it feels so right... It feels like nothing could go wrong. Does it ever, feel like that to you? Does it ever, feel like that to you? Oh I don't know what I mean it sounded wrong and I'm just tired, not being weird. I just mean that you're a good friend it's hard to explain, just forget I said anything. Oh get over yourself, I'm not in love with you it just came out all wrong. Yeah tell the guys and laugh it up, why am I even surprised? That it never, feels like that to you? That it never, feels like that to you? I guess it never, feels like that to you? Yeah, it happened to me this year, the only difference is that there is no Jeremy in my life, instead of him there is an Alex, a very good friend of mine. This song describes those days when I used to go to university and spent a lot of time with him, he made me perceive the world in a different way, I loved hearing him talk about topics related to art, music, philosophy, literature and architecture, I remember when we walked by the campus and we lay on the grass, many times just him and me, i really miss those days ...

to me this song captures the essence of feeling like a bumbling fool in all of your romantic forays. You never use the right words to tell that special person to tell how important to you they are, or they never feel the same way back to you, or you find yourself always getting attached to people who don't give the same depth of commitment and love. those last lyrics make me cry "Yeah Tell the guys and laugh it up Why am I even surprised? That it never Feels like that to you" the guy has been schooled by heartbreak and rejection and letdown, and resigns himself to his lack of surprise that nothing turns out right, and nobody feels the same way he does.

The way it's written isn't romantic, supposedly two male friends (supposedly Andy talking to Jeremy), Andy's saying he's got a very very strong friendship with him but Jeremy then thinks Andy's gay. If you want it to be romantic, you could believe Andy plays a female character.

Probably one of my favourite songs I've ever heard. And I've heard a lot. Just incredible in every way. So many amazing sounding songs don't have the kind of lyrics that match the quality of the sound. They're still great songs but there's always that little bit missing to complete it. This song is both incredible sonically and has touching and real lyrics. So glad I found this. Makes me want to go to all my closest friends and tell them just how important they've been throughout my life, and that I love them til the end. A great lesson I learned is don't assume how people are truly feeling, and how they think you feel about them, or how they think the world sees them. It can be so easy to deceive others, and be deceived, about how people are doing inside. Even if both of you know definitely how close you are, just fucking tell them. There's few feelings as fuckin heartwarming and life-affirming as telling the people who matter in your life what they mean to you. It can really lift your whole day and life up, as well the person you are telling. It's a beautiful thing and... I can't describe it fully. It makes your whole life bloom into a full feeling of happiness and purpose. Don't just tell them you love them, explain the things that makes you appreciate them, what they've taught you in life, that you love them too much to lose them over whatever problems arise. Being told by someone they love you is one thing. But being told *why* you are loved, it shows that you make a difference in the world, whether you realize it or not you are constantly affecting the world by who you are. And if people love you, then you're doing good in the world. People forget that people are different, despite how similar we are too. We all go through different problems in our life, and most people just need a friend that won't judge them, who sticks around. You can't command people into changing, you can only live by example. It's the only thing I've seen bring positive change, in others and myself. I don't mean to toot my own horn here. Here's an anecdotal experience from my life on how people change. I want to teach those that are interested in reading. This song got me in deep mode. I used to hang out at this coffee shop allll the time. This girl we'll call her Tara, started working there, I'd known her just from parties etc... We were acquaintances essentially. Well one night there's a few of us in the coffee shop near closing. She asks me if I wanna have a smoke. Yea sure. While outside smoking, she asks "Hey do you want to, maybe, hang out sometime?" This likely sounds like a 'wanna go on a date' kind of question. But I could tell it wasn't anything like that, that she saw in me something else.. Someone to just talk to. So we start hanging out at my house. Literally we would sit in my living room with me at night, for hours and hours till morning and we'd just talk. Mostly her, I let her just talk. She needed to so badly. She poured out her whole life. All the terrible shit she's gone through. Her fucked up lifestyle from her coke addiction. Over the next 6 months or so, she would just get all this weight off of her. It had been bottled up so tightly for so long. This whole time, I just looked into her eyes, giving her my focused attention. I truly listened to her, I gave her feedback but never judged, never told her she was stupid or a bad person, I just showed her true interest and cared about what she said. I think I made her feel like her problems were worth something, that they that significance. I gave her a person to figure out her problems out loud, I was there so she knew that someone understood what she was going though. That someone wasn't just waiting for their turn to talk, their turn to tell their own *crazy* story and what crazy problems they have too. I hate one-up conversations. And I had my own problems, I drank too much at this point, I was having trouble keeping down jobs and yeah we talked about those. But Tara, she was getting to her limit, her breaking point. Probably one bad decision of mine was to indulge in some of the coke sometimes that she brought. Lol but honestly, it works wonders for those deep, real talks with friends. Most of the time I just let her do it without addressing it. Why not address you might be thinking?? Addicts know they're addicts, they know it's a problem. Don't be a captain obvious to who you want to help. Anyway to wrap up. After a few months of this, the ol' When Harry Met Sally thing happened. It's hard to keep sexual things out of a friendship between different sexes, especially when it's become such an intense and personal friendship so quickly. We never slept together. When things were starting up, we both felt that it was just not to be. It was weird but we both knew in some cosmic way, it wasn't the reason we were hanging out with each other for this brief time. A few months later (about 6 months after we first started hanging out), we stopped hanging out after a small little argument. She wanted to do some blow at my parents house and I said no she couldn't. She said she was gonna take a cab then and leave and I said okay that's fine. We didn't really leave on bad terms, it was just a sort of jangled goodbye. Another thing I forgot to add in here, is that to help a person out, you HAVE to be patient. It's always gonna be a bumpy road and you can't beat them up for fuck ups. If you know they truly want to change. Anyway, about I think a year later I run into her. Honestly I can't remember where because my mind sort of exploded. She pulls me aside from my friends and leans into my ear and says "You saved my life. I seriously mean it. I owe my life you to. You were the only person that actually helped me and didn't judge me. You fucking saved my life." I tried to play it down like I didn't really do anything. But she told my with such emotional conviction. "NO! You have to know, you. saved. my. life." Well I cried really fucking hard. I had no idea I had had that much of an impact on her. I can't explan the intensity of that moment, but if you ever experience it, it's beautiful, amazing, overwhelming. It rips you out of your robotic aut-pilot state, and throws you into pure realness. So back to my point before. Don't assume people think of themselves the same way you see them. Tell the people who matter in your life what they mean to you. Her telling me that was one of the most overhwelmingly emotional moments of my life. It made me feel that no matter what happens, I did one thing I'll forever be proud of. Much love everyone sorry for the novel, I get carried away. Show some love today.

It's a damn hard fact of life that not everyone feels the way you do, that the world owes you absolutely fuck all, and it isn't a fairy tale most of the time. I've had a handful of women that I felt a strong attraction to. But for various reasons, they didn't feel the same way. One of them did but I had nothing going on in my life. I was drinking everyday, working crappy jobs, living with parents. I can understand that might feel like taking on dead weight. I guess what I'm tryng to say is, it's an important skill to be able to move on, there's millions of awesome people out there, don't get too hung up on one. And the other thing, if you really feel someone has amazing potential, but they're not in the most *ideal* spot in life, don't write them off. Think to yourself maybe if someone gave them a great big dose of love, and had someone who wanted to see them succeed and move forward. Someone who was by their side and supported them, would they feel a purpose and get some drive in their life? It's incredible what pure love and support can do to someone's motivation. Well anyways now, I've stopped drinking, lost all the beer weight, co-own a business. Sorry for the rant.

Brian Sanchez really bugging me too, sounds like something I’ve heard on one of those hour long Nightmares in Wax mixes. badbadnotgood did a cover of it, if you heard that one first maybe that’s what you’re thinking about?

I think you'll find songs similar this by looking through Harry Nilsson's and Steely Dan's discography. But I can tell you this: those beautiful clarinets you ain't gonna find anywhere else.

To all the people confused wether the narrator is a boy a girl, Andy mentioned in an Interview that "To You" is probably his favorite Song of the Album and called the narrator an earnest, drunk guy. As to wether the feelings for his friend Jeremy are romantic in their nature is somewhat ambiguous, but I do believe they are just by the way its phrased. He ends up downplaying them because he is embarrassed when he realizes Jeremy doesn't reciprocate his feelings, and is making fun of him.

I was once the "Jeremy" in this song, when I was about 19 years old. My friend just wanted to Express his feelings, and I made fun of him, laughed and called him Gay. I will forever regret that, I was so wrong for acting that way. I was young, but I still should've known better. I had just never had a relationship like that, never had such a strong connection with a platonic friend before. I hope he knows just how much I regret how I reacted...

I've played poker games like this: It always starts out okay, but by the time the second whisky bottle hits the floor, somebody is legless, somebody is dancing on the table, somebody has shrunken to the size of a rodent, and then there's me, on the ground, trying to remember where I left my shoes.
