A great record of the magnificent Midland Red.I grew up not far from Bearwood Garage when the GHAs were allocated to the amazing X96 service Shrewsbury to Northampton .I wrote to the company and they sent a fleet list for us spotters to tick off the numbers I think free of charge.I couldn't believe how modern looking were the prototypes for post war production years ahead of the completion -great days from the 1940s up to the D10s in the early 1960s

Great to see these lovely old buses, there used to be a club in digbeth for midland red staff. Didn't know they built their own vehicles.
@antman09ful12 жыл бұрын
Yes Sue that's why they were different to other bus company's, thank you for watching.

As a Midland red bus driver during the 1960's after being trained at Bearwood to PSV standard, then route learning for a few days at Reddditch then drove DD5's D7's and D9's until emigrating to Australia November 1965.

So this video is right up your street Joseph, When I was a kid I just loved Midland Red which would have been around the same time as you were driving. Most weekend my mate and me would have a Anywhere ticket and visit all the garages around the Midlands. No H&S then, such great days and I still have my MR fleet lists. Thanks for your intresting comment. Regards Mike.

I remember Midland Red buses which ran between Coventry, Birmingham and Leicester and many other Midlands towns. I always thought the single deckers like those at 0:35 had a sad, folorn look due to the grille design and headlight placement..
@antman09ful12 жыл бұрын
Yes I understand about the sad look they had, I just loved the company as they built there own buses and coaches.

antman09ful1 My"expert"has corrected me and says that Midland Red did call at LMS,Manchester but they were usually during the night on long-distance runs,no wonder I never saw them!Although todays buses are mostly comfy , tuneful and clean they are missing the style and variety of earlier ones.Joe

Love the old halfcab clagging away towards the end. That double declutching looks rather complicated, doesn't it.
@antman09ful110 жыл бұрын

The double declutching looks complicated here because the gearbox seems reluctant to get into any gear, perhaps the oil is still cold, change up should be just one double de clutch via neutral, change down should be one double declutch via neutral with some revs to synchronise the gearbox speed with the road speed, nice recording BTW.

(Not so) great Britain and their insistence on single door mobile caves to this day except for London. Couldn't even muster a narrow centre exit?
