Nice video I love the sounds of these beasts I seen 40145 in 2015 in br large logo with yellow cabs I didnt realise it was a class 40 at 1st at the east lancs railway in bury near Manchester It looked more like a class 37 in that unusual livery that was never applied to any br class 40s in the 1980s and nice to see this locomotive earning it's keep by doing some real work on the mainline!!!😎

I'm really pleased and surprised to see a Class 40 back on the mainline and in such original condition with her headcodes still in tact and in working order. I didn't know their ultimate fate or whether there were any survivors that escaped the scrap heap. I love the Class 66 too but she looks completely dwarfed when stood side-by-side with the Class 40 at 1:59.

Great capture Mike. I do love the classic diesels. The 40's have such a distinctive sound. The only modern diesel that sounds nice is the 68.

Yes they do have a distinctive sound the class 40 Alistair which I will never forget will creeping around depot in the middle of night in the late 70s. I do agree with your comment about the 68 but the class 70 is not far behind. Cheers Mike.

Even in their heyday, class 40s were exceptional visitors round there. I did see one shunting a trainload of Ford Granadas into the car depot at Maidenhead whilst in an English lesson at school. Come the lunchtime bell, maybe 30 or 40 of us raced down to the trackside from whatever classes we were in to get a closer look!

Morning Nige, Well I was lucky to get this class 40 as my camcorder battery was playing up, and I did hear a buzzing sound coming from the cam around 20 mins before the 40 arrived. That coach you mentioned looks like a loading door to me Nige, but yesterday I had a good day but I did come home early as it was so cold. Keep safe mate.

Yesterday the train left Dartmouth with two class 37 to Bristol, the 40 came on from Bristol to Willesden, a class 90002 took the train into Euston Station with the class 40 on the back. Then the class 40 hauled the train to Crewe with the class 90 on the back Phil.

Class 40 had 16 cylinders and 4 t/blowers ( hence the whistling ). The 37s had 12 cylinders and 2 t/blowers but with intercoolers to increase power per cylinder, but the cyl/heads, pistons, con rods and fuel pumps were the same plus many other parts. The 37s had the bigger blowers with intercoolers to boost output because the original order in 1960 was for E. A. R.and they had to climb to 9,500 ft from Mombasa to the inter land. Then B. R. Ordered them in 1963. Good loco more versatile.

So, this is the famous "Deltic" locomotive, with its diesel engine based on the Mercedes-Benz "Schnellboot" engines of World War 2? And are the British so very afraid of seeing out of running trains or been seen as seated in them, that they choose to either minimize (or even block out) windows on their passenger compartments?

@@douglasallen511 the blue train is a locomotive from the 1960s and the poster of the other comment called it a good train and doesn't take much of a liking to newer modern trains

I don't mind the class 66, just that there are far to many of them now, It was better when we had the class 40 with lots of different class on our railway.
