It’s actually the smartest way you could “maybe” set a car gas tank. Fumes are what ignite. So just lighting lighter near open tank could cause it to explode/catch fire. He used cotton ball bottle seal to trap fumes in tank until it melted. Kind of a neat improvised fuse.

Except that there would already be fumes in the air from the removal of the gas cap. Sure he sealed it, but he would need to wait a few minutes for the escaped fumes to dissipate before lighting. I guarantee this would've gone differently had it been real.

I like how this movie doesnt hide "thinking details" from the audience. Every character explicitly shows everything going on in their minds and how they interact with their environment. No flashback, no cut away, no obtuse deus ex. Just people who know how to use whats between their eyes and ears.
@CoastShuttle

There are also people who actually believe that a vehicle's gas tank does not contain oxygen and thus could never explode in such a fashion. In fact, there is not only always oxygen present, but there is even a name for the thin layer of air pressed up against the top of the tank even when it's completely full, called "ullage." There are literally thousands of people worldwide that are killed as well as horribly burned by an exploding container when the person douses a campfire or something similar with gasoline. It is extremely flammable and dangerous.

No Country for Old Men single handily shattered my perception of what an exciting, and awesome movie could be. I first saw this film when I was 12 years old in 2011, once my dad had deemed I was mature enough to watch it. As a child prior to viewing this film, I thought movies like Spider-Man were thrilling and exhilarating. Any movie that I had perceived as being exciting before I watched No Country for Old Men became a mere afterthought after I experienced what it had to offer in terms of sheer intensity, combined with quality storytelling. I was completely blown away. Until that point I had never been truly immersed into a film before, let alone one of the most most suspenseful thrillers ever. Looking back on it years later, this movie made me understand that realistic films that depict what humans in the real world are capable of just makes for the most gripping cinema imaginable. It conveys a darker side of humanity, and how a persons life experiences and circumstance can shape them into something opposite of a normal human. After I saw this film I asked my father if people like Anton Chigurh really existed, to which he replied “Yes, hitmen like that exist all over the world”. This movie seamlessly takes a very real scenario, and mixes it with truly brilliant acting and fluent screenplay to give the audience an accurate view of how ruthless, elusive and, precise the most effective hitmen in the world can be. I wasn’t interested in superhero movies anymore after this film. It gave me a new perspective on what great storytelling is, and made me more interested in the production of movies as an art, as opposed to a conventional Hollywood blockbuster.

This is an in-joke nod to the Coens ’ company, Mike Zoss Productions, named after a pharmacy where the young Coen brothers used to hang out in their hometown of Minneapolis. The pharmacy in the movie was an empty property at 610 Douglas Avenue in Las Vegas - right where Moss had earlier flagged down the car to escape Chigurh.

If you think about it, this would probably work in real life. People tend to form swarms while under the effect of cause. Nobody would recognize the one who is not frightened. All we would see is our own safety.

A cool scene in that it establishes that Anton is most likely incapable of ever getting medical care for his arm at the end of the movie, and will likely lose it. He can't exactly go to the hospital

Eh, the scene immediately after this shows that he doesn't need to go to hospitals for such injuries. He can treat himself. The arm probably wont be the same but I doubt he loses it.

If this happened in 1980, the 1987 Chevy Caprice is out of place. Hollywood never gets these throwback films right.

Yeah, I notice some of these subtle continuity errors as well. For example Antons famous "silenced" shotgun is a Remington 11-87, not on the market until 1987. I imagine its quite the herculean task to get everything absolutely period correct, almost an impossible task. Some years ago I remember two people who claimed they were both experienced electricians arguing about the DOM of a light fixtures in movies. So I tend to give most things a pass, the nit-pickery of movies in the inter-web era of communication is never ending.

Dude killed cop inside police station, killed a civilian on the road, almost killed a gas station owner, had some gun fights here and there, had one of the most distinct look, still managed to roam freely.

Yeah you'd think even for 1980 there would be more of a concerted effort by law enforcement to track him down. Surely there would be more agencies and elements to activate than one almost retired sheriff and one deputy.

With all due respect, the gas station clerk let Anton leave. He'd already had to murder six people that day to cover up his other coinflip losses, and by the time Anton showed up he was sick of burying bodies. Plus, it was approaching the nondescript time of day when his shift may or may not have ended. 😁

Not sure if you’re into cars but I’d like to point out that tan Chevy Caprice in front of the Blue car Anton blew up. The taillights on that Caprice belong to the 86 Chevy caprice and Newer. In the time frame at 0:54 there is a white Chevy caprice that has the 1980-1985 three taillights. Slight goof but I somehow caught it.
