What a fantastic piece, I must admit I had only heard the piano concerti before. I really must listen to more Rubinstein.

The first theme of the opening movement could almost pass off as Baroque music. I never understand why composers are criticized, especially so long after their death, for things such as "not being Russian enough." I understand the politics when they are living playing into such things, but for us whether we are sitting in Canada, Madagascar, or Japan, why does it matter if Rubinstein wasn't "Russian enough" or "enough like the other Russians"?
