Thank God this movie survived! As Stephen Fry explained it, if the Hollywood bastards who wanted to make their own version bought up all the copies of this earlier version that they could lay their hands on to try to destroy it, that's a prime example of how evil people can be in their pursuit of money or whatever else. To set out to deliberately destroy any fine creation, that's really low. I didn't even know this version existed, now I want to see it.

Dang! I have both versions & have watched the original but think I will watch it again. Anton Walbrook is easy on the eyes anyway, but yeah, I never realized until these clips how wildly effective he really was in this role, wow! Makes Charles Boyer look like he's sleep. Charles Boyer excelled in comedy tho. Thanks for opening my eyes here!!

I sometimes wonder there is any subject that couldn't be enriched with commentary of Steven Fry. I could listen to him talk all day and still be hungry for more.

Anton Walbrook! Be still, my beating heart. Now, THERE is a sexy man if I ever did see one. His screen presence is divine. Such an underrated actor on the whole and his mesmerising turn in The Red Shoes ranks amongst my all time favourite performances.

@@suzanneg6966 Actually, you're right. I'm not sure what I intended. Maybe . . . that (potential) mutuality is usually a component of sexual attraction. But as you say, that's only usually . . .

“Give me ze hhhrrrrooooooobies”. I commend the original version. It was remastered by the BFI some years ago and is available on BluRay. The film deserves to survive, and I hope more people will see it and appreciate it.

There is something much more menacing in the 1940 version. I think it has to do with the fact that, as the audience, our emotional investment with Bella's plight ends up leaving us as vulnerable as she is to her husband's outbursts/mistreatment. It is only when Bella 'taunts' Paul with the stiletto that our tension is released. Gaslight is indeed a very clever piece of film-making to be able to do this.

This film is hardly ever seen, even in England. The hollywood version is far inferior, and Walbrook is GREAT.

I have heard about this and I have to see it. I think Bergman and Boyer are excellent in the Cukor version, with Angela Lansbury stealing every scene she's in. It has to be awfully good to beat the Hollywood version. And I say this as someone who adores Anton Walbrook.

I just watched it. I think the Hollywood version goes toe to toe with the original. George Cukor had a less economical storytelling style and a much larger budget. Anton Walbrook had that sinister Austrian accent, perfect for a British film made during WWII. However, Charles Boyer makes an awfully chilling bad guy. Thank you so much for uploading this!

Ingrid Bergman was one of the most beautiful women of the 20th century. I have never read anywhere about her being a nazi sympathizer. I would think by now, if that muck was there to rake, it would've been raked.
