Thank you for presenting this lovely tribute to Mae Clark. I've always enjoyed the films she did during the 1930s, especially "Three Wise Girls" with Jean Harlow and Marie Prevost. She was always so genuine and beautiful.

Nice tribute, Antonia. My favorite Mae Clarke performance is Waterloo Bridge. Myra just breaks my heart. It's one of my 3 favorite performances of the early 1930, along with Fay Eray in King Kong and Jean Harlow in Red Dust.

What a moving video. Thank you for doing the work. The Criterion Channel is offering a set of pre-code films. Tonight I watched Three Wise Girls with Mae Clarke, Marie Provost, and Jean Harlow. Last night I watched the Frank Capra film Ladies of Leisure with Barbara Stanwyck and Marie Provost. Provost was so good I looked her up. She also had a tragic life. She had been a leading lady, but weight gain moved her to supporting roles. A series of tragedies in her life caused her to drink and eat and diet until she died home alone at the age of 40. She wasn't found for two days. She was evidently one of the reasons for the founding of the Motion Picture Home for actors. Clarke fascinates me because she is a refined presence in her scenes. That's why I stopped to look her up. It's strange to know Harlow is the one who is seen as beautiful. It's been an unexpected part of watching these films to find the women actors are the heart of the film, but their personal lives are so fragile.

thank you for championing this underappreciated icon. it’s a shame that her supporting bit against cagney is better remembered than her dazzling, heartbreaking star vehicle in WATERLOO BRIDGE. keep up the great work!

Excellent presentation. Although I'm sure it never ranked highly in her resume, she also starred in my favorite Republic serial, "King of the Rocket Men" with Tris Coffin (as a good guy!) The entire cast of that one seem oddly energized and give 100%. Maybe Clarke's professionalism was an inspiration?

Thanks for a very well done tribute to an underrated star of the Golden Age. i had only known her by name as the grapefruit girl in Public Enemy, never even noticed she was in Frankenstein. Then I saw Waterloo Bridge and Wow, she was a great actress...I saw some others of her 30s films and I'm convinced she was an above average talent.

I liked her as Elizabeth more than the replacement she had a bit more warmth and delicacy in her portrayal it’s a shame that James Whale didn’t fight to keep her in the role.

I see that same story over and over. I suppose it's not so different from today - but I'm almost comforted by the fact that the internet and social media has made it so much easier for celebrities to keep going after they're dismissed or forgotten by more "traditional" media

What a compassionate, empathetic portrait. The scream queens have found a true sister in you! I was really impressed by her work in Waterloo Bridge. It is much grittier than Vivien Leigh's (though I like it, too!) Thank you for advocating for the first Bride of Frankenstein! 🔩 Hey, is that your cat in the photo above the other Bride? 🐈

IMHO one of the most underrated actresses of old Hollywood. I think her Myra in Waterloo Bridge is superior to Vivien Leigh's and she's so good in Frankenstein and The Public Enemy. Thank you for explaining why Mae Clarke wasn't in " The Bride of Frankenstein," which I didn't care for as much as the original. Valerie Hobson didn't resemble Mae Clarke, and there were different actors portraying the mayor and little Maria's father. John Boles' character completely disappeared, too. Anyway, thanks again for your presentation.

It's too bad that she was on the wrong end of an iconic moment in movie history. They should have let her smack Cagney back in that movie. It would have been better for her and also foreshadowed women fighting back in the future in real life.
