It was incredible to have four-time Grammy Award winner Antonio Sanchez visit the Drumeo studios, where he shared his creative concepts for building solos over a groove, over a form, as well as completely open solos - in addition to sharing his techniques for sustaining motivic development throughout your solos.
Antonio has become one of the most sought after drummers in the international jazz scene, with his playing featured in more than one hundred albums and having performed with some of the biggest names including Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Gary Burton, and Toots Thielmans - as well as composing the innovative jazz drummer-led score for the Oscar-winning Best-Picture film, “Birdman”.

This is amazing. He makes the drums talk. There's nothing random in this solo; no meaningless groovy fill. Pure subtlety and well-thought development.

Is this the guy who did he Birdman soundtrack? That movie is one of my all time favourites, in large part to the soundtrack! Some people complain about the "repetitiveness" but I love that mesmerizing constant groove, interspersed with some surprising fills! I'd have this as the background music to my life if I could!

I thought it was amazing, personally!! I was fortunate enough to see Antonio play in 2015 in Victoria, and I was blown away then as well. A lot of dislikes for such a great musician, but I've seen similar comments about Jack DeJohnette solos and Jack is my favourite drummer of all time. When a drummer plays a groove solo or a "song" on drums instead of a shred fest, there's always some people who think it sucks.

MAESTRAZO🙏👏. Saludos desde Chile🇨🇱

Never read so much hate for a masterful craftsman like Antonio Sanchez.... listen to the music he creates and enjoy it. Stop searching for chops- you can find that from immature drummers.
@anirbankundu6581
@anirbankundu6581 6 жыл бұрын
Cole Baker i guess it's mostly because of immature people commenting who believe that blasting at 1 million bpm is the only definition of good drumming. Not dissing on metal drumming, love that too. But i feel some people here are just obnoxious and incapable of appreciating a genius at work.

@@m.k.mcgill They just haven’t grasped the concept of not only playing with speed, but playing fast with limb control and precision. It’s not their fault. Those that are serious drumming enthusiasts most likely will eventually find their way to learning or attempting to learn how to play the stuff Antonio Sanchez plays. Then, they’ll realize how hard it really is. Sincerely, Somebody that used to not understand how hard jazz is until he got John Riley’s lesson books.

Wow 76 thumbs down on Sanchez? I guess they must all be much better players. His technique and soloing remind me of Marvin Smitty Smith. Steve Smith had his hands full dealing with Marvin on the BR memorial concert. That almost freaky weird blazing speed with incredible dynamic ranges. Anyway, maybe the thumbs down people here should post their own videos. Just so they can show us how it's done.

Feel free to take me up on this (dangerous on youtube...) but after watching some old and new Sanchez vids, performances, and solos, it seems like his playing has gotten quite a bit more textural, and he sits in ideas for a little longer. Definitely possible after diving into Birdman score and continuing to tour with it around the world? thoughts @Drumeo ?

Wow, I can't believe how many people don't know anything about soloing in jazz music. I mean, soloing is not about showing how fast you can move or how many notes you can pull out in few seconds. Soloing is about telling your story. I prefer to talk to a person who can discuss one topic but from many perspective rather than a guy who can not focus on one thing and go to random topic every time. If you can't understand what I'm saying, you are missing a lot of things in music.
