Antonov An-2 - engine start (awesome sound!)

Smoky and noisy start of the 1000 hp, 9 cylinder radial.
This engine is based on the Wright R-1820-F3 Cyclone, and it was modified under licence by the Shvetsov plant in 1933. Since 1938 its been produced with a reductor system as ASh-62IR.

No no no the russian dc-3 is called Lisunov Li2 it has this exact same engine (two of them) there is just one of them now which is capable of flying (also in hungary) The dc-3s engine was copied by the russian (AS-62) and it got a two stage supercharger. the new 1000hp engine was put in many russian planes including the An-2 Li-2 and many many other

When I was still skydiving, we had one of those as a guest on our airstrip. In the morning, when the pilot started the engine, the whole hangar shook and the doors rattled like crazy. Wonderful, impressive machine!

This plane was a workhorse of the short-range aviation all the way throughout Siberia, Far East, Arctic. It was used all over the world from Antarctica to Cuba. I personally saw one flying out from the island of Cubebra, Puerto Rico three years ago. By the way I recognized the sound of the engine. I was sitting inside my boat when I heard that unmistakable sound. I jumped out on the deck and there it was - low over the reef. You cannot confuse it with any other plane. They are trying to start manufacturing it with a new engine and new avionics in Russia.

The one thing I just love about Radial Engines is, when you start them they sort of says Nope Nope Nope erm Nope Nope will maybe erm Nope ok yes but not completely not yet not yet not yet Ok now. Completely unique in start up and running.

I had the pleasure of flying one of these beauties as P1(s) back in the 80s in Swansea, Wales. What a hoot to fly. Taxying is an art as the ground steering is done by differential braking of each wheel (air brakes). It's more like driving a bus.

Amazing to see that 1000 hp engine can lift such an aircraft without problem. WW2 single engine fighters had 1600- 2000 hp engines- so powerful they were.

Well, both are air-cooled pushrod designs, that's why. The only difference being that modern V-twin Harleys are fuel injected, while the Shvetsov ASh-62 radial 9 is carbureted.

I was going to write the exact same thing. I grew up in Budaörs - in Hungary in the 70s, near the airfield. I could see the airfield from my window, so I could see and hear these beautiful airplanes almost daily in the summer, even some nights when they were practicing take offs and landings. Oddly enough, I never found the noise from these planes disturbing.

I had forgotten about inertia starters until I heard this one winding up before engaging for the start. I was a crew chief for Army U-6A Beaver (R-985 engine) in Pleiku, Vietnam Central Highlands. I had it running like a fine watch, and it always started the first time.

larslarsn Nice! I think.....THINK my grandfather had inertia starters on his two Grumman Ag cats. That was around '78 and I was young and could be completely wrong but I remember hearing them start like that. They were both pratts but I can't recall the engine size. R-some thing. I also remember one of his planes having a shotgun shell starter also for a bit but he hated that damn thing! Lol

The starter seems to bring a flywheel up to speed and then some kind of clutch is engaged to turn over the engine. Is that right? I have never heard a radial start up before.

What a magic sound, in common with the Douglas DC3, these aircraft will outlast ALL the Airbus plastic wonders, which already are proving to have ,stress problems.The start up was interesting ,great filming, I could smell the exhaust,Well done,lovely video. Thank you.

I remember those Antonov 2 flying over my home in Ciego De Avila, Cuba back in the 70s, first airplane I ever saw, they still have them, last time I saw one over there was at the beach of Santa Lucía, Camaguey, Cuba with a guy harnessed to the side door dropping the packs of Newspapers and mail. It's a huge testament to Oleg Antonov that a supposedly obsolete-looking plane has lasted to this day. its very rugged, highly-adaptable design shows why it's still around in many parts of the world still flying in its original intended roles as light transport, crop duster and parachute drop trainer. If they could figure out a way to make the PZL MIelec built An-2's fully FAA-certified, there would be a *LOT* of buyers in the USA, especially in Alaska for bush flying.

how come this amazingly versatile aircraft ain't legal in the U.S.? Watched a documentary about them years ago . A guy up in Alaska started shopping these things to bring them into US and sell them. The chicken shit government allowed him to bring 1or2 into the country before they told him they couldn't be flown here. Why? Other Russian and old Soviet planes are allowed.

Antonov An-2's are perfectly legal in the US. But not for commercial use, such as cargo, skydiving, crop spraying, commercial passenger transport etc. But quite a few exist as private aircraft, for private use.

Had the privilege of seeing one of these at the Huntsville, Alabama airport some years back. I had a scanner back then and could listen in on the air-to-air and air-to-tower communications. Even the airline pilots were wondering what it was.

In my country they are used in army for advanced parachuting training. First is,you know,when rope it self opens your shoot.Then they go to An2 or helicopters..And then again to bigger planes for jumps from higher altitude. You cant use that rope jumps from An2.

I once made a tandem jump out of an Antonov 2 in Radevormwald, Germany. The cabin smelled of gasoline and the airplane made it barely to 6500 feet above ground. The jump was delayed by six hoursdue to a defective transponder.

Beautiful aircraft! I remember Josh Gates riding in one of these same planes in one of his older shows, Destination Truth to investigate the haunted forest of Romania to investigate a bald spot in the forest where nothing grows and unexplained lights happen and when they approached the area flying overhead in one of these, Josh was in the co-pilot seat and the roof above the pilot and him came off. He did a second show revisiting the same forest in a Cessna 172 and they had engine problems over the same spot in the forest.

We use plenty of them in Hungary (and propably in many surrounding countries) for sparying. In summer they just flyby above the houses if your town's area is rich in mosquitos. Really good feeling tho, you can feel each blows of the engine in your chest.

Until you run out of cartridges. The inertia starter takes relatively low current from the battery. Reliable!

Horst Oertel Oldschool Radialmotoren oder Doppelsternmotoren genannt sind solide und robust. Springen bei jedem Wetter an und sind immer zuverlässig. Es gibt Doppelsternmotoren mit bis zu 36 Zylindern. Der größte der mir bekannt war,hatte 48 Zylinder. Und zwar ein Gnome' Rhone. Der saß in der Me 323 Gigant. Sechs Stück pro Flugzeug

Die Motoren sind mir bekannt. Es waren die einzigen Motoren die in ausreichender Anzahl zur Verfügung standen seinerzeit. Focke Wulf hatte zu der Zeit kein Aggregat was diesen Riesen hätte in die Luft bringen können. Jedoch muss man sagen das die Motoren Brandgefährlich waren im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Ich kenne mich in der Zeit des zweiten Weltkrieges recht gut aus was die Deutsche Technik zu Lande,zu Wasser und auch in der Luft angeht.

180L wollgas? nee! das ist der kreutzfahrt verbrauch... nich vergessen das es ein 1000PS motor ist, vollgas frisst so ein motor 250 bis 300 L/stunde, aber vollgas geht nur 5 minuten, danach uberhitzt er...
