The Antonov AN-30 is an upgraded Soviet-era plane used by the Romanian Air Force to fulfil the Open Skies Treaty.
That allows participating states to conduct unarmed reconnaissance flights over each other's territory.
The Cold War-era aircraft is perfect for the job as it was designed for aerial mapping and reconnaissance.

It was good to see some of our newer allies like Romania and Hungary at RIAT this year. Where once we saw MiG 21s now we see SAABs and Vipers.

Where once we saw Mig21's, we still see Mig21s, but with modern NATO avionics and ammo lol. Its a damn shame the USSR had so many talented engineers and scientists, but were absolutely cucked by their government. The A10, P47, Sikorsky, and so many other aviation icons in the US, all are russian immigrants. The US at the time was the one country that was MASSIVE on immigration. Russians seeing their fellow russian make it big in other countries probably placed alot of doubts on their planned economy. Its sad that Gorbachev tried to bring change, but the older stalinistic russians ruined it.

The Romanian army started the modernization process: F16's, Patriots, Naval Strike Missile systems (to be delivered), HIMARS, Piranha V, new IVECO trucks, and other stuff like Go Wind Corvettes, Watchkeeper drones (actually these are/were close to be signed) and possibly 2 Scorpene subs are in the plan for the next stage of modernization. Of course there's plenty of other stuff like new tanks (Abrams or Leopard), F35's (after 2030), attack helicopters (Apache or Vipers), transport helicopters (Venom or Black Hawk), IFV vehicles and SHOARD and VSHORAD systems (most likely NASAMS) that needs to be purchased but it will take some time, because in since 1989 there were absolutely no investments in new military hardware and the country can't afford to buy all these systems at once. The military budget was increased to 2.5% of the GDP, this means about $7.88 billion for this year and $8.46 billion for 2023 (if the IMF prognosis is correct lol) - about 30-35% is used to purchase new hardware ($2-2.5 billion)

Ukrainian made AN-2, AN-24, AN-26 were huge civil aviation workhorses during 1965-1995 in former eastern block countries. No wonder AN-30 is still operating and doing some noteciable jobs.

I love Soviet aircrafts. I heard a saying, maybe someone can tell me if it's true or not: Soviet planes are built like tanks, American planes are built like swiss watches.
@divinewind6313
@divinewind6313 2 жыл бұрын
Its the design philosophy. Soviet Union designed their aircrafts to be operated from not so well maintained runways and serviced not so well trained staff as most of the Soviet Armed Forces were conscripted. This inadvertently will lead to lower quality which they hope to overcome with quantity.
@nonamesplease6288
@nonamesplease6288 2 жыл бұрын
Officially, up until the end of the Cold War, Soviet planes were designed and built based on "demand pull". This means they were built to the specifications that Soviet Aviation laid out to fulfill their needs. American aircraft were designed and built based on "technology push", which, of course, means they used the best possible technology to put the most technologically advanced plane in the air. This model has changed since the end of the Cod War when Russia started to design planes based on technology push, or more of a combination, to keep up with the West. Later Sovietcand Russia aircraft have become much more sophisticated and much more expensive.

@@nonamesplease6288 I wouldnt say technology push. The YF-23 was marginally better than the YF-22, but the YF-22 won the contract because they demonstrated a better understanding and capability of the manufacturing processes. I feel like its more so the Army would have a list of wanted capabilities, which they would first conduct statistical studies to find. Then from there on, they would contract Lockheed and such to fullfill these wanted capabilities. The Army does alot of the research and such, and the private sector focuses on fullfilling those requirements and managing the production.
