This is a lot like the Surreal egg, designed by the guide and fly tier Mr. Surrell. Great pattern everywhere.

Very cool, I tied this pattern for awhile before seeing this video but I used glo bug yarn instead. Works good aswell.

First time I’ve seen this, but the designer of this is Jim Pettus in Redding, he came up with this pattern as well as several others about twenty years ago. I’d like to give him some kudos for it. Barry

Hi Barry, thanks for the comment. I believe Jim spells his name with an i- Pettis. Although the two flies look almost identical in the end they are really quite different. Jim's original pattern has a glass bead at the center as opposed to dubbing here (I like this fly to be as weightless and neutrally buoyant as possible so it drifts naturally). Mr Pettis also used Glo-Bug yarn loosely pulled over the bead. This egg, mainly because Antron has no stretch needs to be "inflated" after the candy cane wraps of tying thread. Had I known of Mr Pettis or his "Unreal Egg" when this video was produced I certainly would have given him credit. One last thing, to me, Antron is the real star of the show with this fly, because of its translucency and shimmer, hence the name of the fly.

Yep, steelhead antron dubbing from Wapsi. The boxes with a variety of colors work out really well.

it looks like you could also add some weight to it easily with just a few wraps of leadfree wire before you started tying if you wanted an egg that sinks extra fast

put a bead in the middle. your choice of color. glass, metal, painted or not. just make sure you have enough hook to keep the hooks gap from getting blocked. its a killer pattern. gold and orange, pink and silver are killers. so is red in the right combo.

I caught a nice 14” brown that had eggs from a hatchery stream last week so I whipped up a half dozen of these with slightly different dubbing to try out and they killed it caught probably 30 fish on them today the fish were hitting them so hard I was having to dig them out of a couple with my foreceps was insane if my friends ask I’m blaming my eggdiction to these on you
