I read Anupama's book on 'Sholay' and it was just incredible. It gave such great insights into the making of the greatest Indian film ever, that my love for my favorite film grew even more. She is amazing.. her knowledge and passion for cinema is unparalleled, and she is one of the last few authentic critics left in the film criticism/analysis space. Yes, she is a part of the "Bollywood" ecosystem and I do disagree with her numerous times, but still respect her the most when it comes to her work and her personality.

@UselessBurnee To me, and millions, it is. Although, cinema is subjective.. Sholay's achievements have not been sarpassed by any film to date. Sholay is a cultural touchstone.. even Satyajit Ray's films have a limited audience. Sholay is beyond any film ever made in this country.
@WranglerDude5 ай бұрын
@@AnkitGupta-u1n Bro, Sholay is a shameless and an unoriginal remake of Akiro Kurosawa’s cult classic “Seven Samurai”. Hollywood (Magnificient also remade this film 15 years before Sholay was made. Anyway, the point being, if an unoriginal movie like Sholay is the magnus opus of your industry, I really don’t have anything to say…

I remember her interviews with the Kai Po Chhe team, and especially the Kangana Ranaut interview that blew up and made her cool because she spoke her mind and sounded like a free-thinking independent person, before Queen. Anupama Chopra had reasonable interviews that were not just star-flattering superficial PR chats, without the catty tension of Rajeev Masand and she was the first person who had very humane discussions with actors as an equal, asking them to speak their mind and thoughts more

Anupama, having a husband who works in the industry, and lives in such close proximity with the artists, meeting regularly with the stars on a personal level, she can not and should not separate art from the artist, she knows the artist personally and has to treat them according to what they actually are (not during an interview though), whereas interviewers who’s personal lives do not entangle with the glamour world and the common people, who don’t have anything to do with the star, we can just enjoy their work and not care about their personal lives , unless of course if it’s sooo bad that you have to hate them, like for example if they have murdered someone, abused or raped someone, or they constantly incite violence and hatred, then even if their art is good, you cannot support the artist

I try not watch film reviewers before I watch a film. But I have developed an art out of scrubbing their review timelines searching for some clues on whether or not to watch them. Anupama Chopra is one such reviewer for me. Deepa Gehlot, Rsshid Irani, Bharadwaj Rangan and the underrated Komal Nahta are the others. This interviewer affirmed some of the things I suspected but never knew. Good for me. One of the things that I miss in most reviews is something I learnt from a book of reviews that I found in the British Council library. Unfortunately I don't remember who that reviewer was. To some extent Bharadwaj Rangan does it, I.e. to identify something new that has been introduced jnto the film language when it is released. For example, the character of Veronica in Cocktail. People go 'Wow' but nobody seems to recognise that there was never such an incredible female character in Indian films. You both share a distaste for Vange Reddy and it is that distaste that spawned an Animal. It was his revenge film against the Arjun Reddy 'haters' and a self trap-which is now hard for him to break out of.
