You also need to consider the temperature of the material. If the sides are cold they will all migrate to the center where foods will give off more heat. Especially bread.

You're correct about me not factoring in temperatures. I think that is why I am a fan of the ping-pong & wedge style feeding approaches. They always ensure that there's a place for the worms to retreat to if things heat up :)

Maybe try a different approach occasionally. For example, in the first few minutes I would have taken all the dry broken down stuff, even tho it wasn’t finished yet, and feed it to buckets of harvested castings. For me it works great to do that, as the buckets continue to breakdown and get so damp (cuz I close the buckets up with venting holes at the sides). Sometimes I’ll just start a new bucket with dry vermicompost on the bottom and dump a wet bucket on top. It keeps the bucket cycling and gives the few worms that are in there or hatched some new food to work on verses over processing the bucket. Then I just put a bunch new damp bedding and food in the tray so the worms will populate the space again. I’m less interested in days of processing as I am getting rid of food, bedding and having a constant supply of castings to use and give away.

My buckets of harvested castings just sit there - and I never give any thought to doing things with them like dampening or anything... let-alone feeding them. In a way I too know that my vermicompost continues to break down - but I kinda trust that it is happening without needing much help from me... :)

Can I mix Red wigglers and nightcrawler together in the same bin?
@A-V2 күн бұрын
I believe that European nightcrawlers can live in harmony with Red Wigglers 👍🏻

Hi pro What is the dimensions of this bin please?
@A-V2 күн бұрын
The ones that I have the most of are, I believe, approx 5 or 6 gallons capacity - roughly 20" x 15" x 7" 👍🏻
