Oh ya that heavy dense cool air will pour right onto those worm bins!! I bet the worms love rubbing their cocoons off on all that rope! Should be fun to see how long it takes until the contents get flow-ie without being tied up by that twine!! Excellent video AV!!🪱🪱🪱
@A-V5 сағат бұрын
I can see that twine, especially the really thick stuff, taking a fairly long time to go anywhere. If that ends up being the case then maybe some kind of set-it & forget-it experiment can be created out of the system :)

The ice is for applying moisture.. but in a way that allows it to enter the bin gradually. It looks kinda cool too in the time-lapse while it's melting. Thanks for watching!

I ve notice on the latest vids you food is fresh. I ve herd that freezing breaks down cell walls and make food more readily available. But be careful as freezing and thawing will cause excess moisture so thaw it on a baking sheet and allow moisture to run off and use that for pre composting ur bedding. But either way it looks like ur worms are eating. I also purée my food down after thawed. My worms devoured a half of a baby watermelon purée in 3 days but it’s mostly water 😊I did mix a few rotten apples n a few moldy muffins with it to give it more substance. Started using more browns leaves as my maples dropped them. I did have 600 n to much moisture which cause a bunch of mating now I’ve got caccons since added more bedding peat n bio char to absorb moisture and added 600 more worms. So 1200 plus babies & juvenile. Bin has been holding its own heat 80s even without plant warmers, fortunately for me my bin is in my hoop house greenhouse, think my worms or free coffee firings came with solder fly larvae so I’m now using mosquito dunks BT to try and kill then off 😔NE Pa location trying to make worm casting for my dragon fruit orchard. 😊

We had a extreme drought last year here in WI, our fall this year has been dry as well, until the last week or so, now it's snowing, go figure. I always find walnuts from the squirrels and deer mice in my outdoor bins when I go to harvest the castings, so far have not found any mice when I go to feed the worms, sure it's going to happen, lol. Maybe try a different approach occasionally. For example, in the first few minutes I would have taken all the dry broken down stuff, even tho it wasn’t finished yet, and feed it to buckets of harvested castings. For me it works great to do that, as the buckets continue to breakdown and get so damp (cuz I close the buckets up with venting holes at the sides). Sometimes I’ll just start a new bucket with dry vermicompost on the bottom and dump a wet bucket on top. It keeps the bucket cycling and gives the few worms that are in there or hatched some new food to work on verses over processing the bucket. Then I just put a bunch new damp bedding and food in the tray so the worms will populate the space again. I’m less interested in days of processing as I am getting rid of food, bedding and having a constant supply of castings to use and give away.
@A-V6 күн бұрын
My buckets of harvested castings just sit there - and I never give any thought to doing things with them like dampening or anything... let-alone feeding them. In a way I too know that my vermicompost continues to break down - but I kinda trust that it is happening without needing much help from me... :)

You also need to consider the temperature of the material. If the sides are cold they will all migrate to the center where foods will give off more heat. Especially bread.

You're correct about me not factoring in temperatures. I think that is why I am a fan of the ping-pong & wedge style feeding approaches. They always ensure that there's a place for the worms to retreat to if things heat up :)
