@@russellbarkleyphd2023 Hi and thank you So, So much for existing. I just started on your yellow book. You always approach the concept of an ADHDer as being surrounded by healthy people, friends and all things positive. And it seems pretty important for ADHDers - more so than others - to have this kind of an environment both in childhood and adulthood/parenthood. But what if it isn't? Can you do some videos on that please?

I'm pretty sure that my brain developed anxiety as a coping mechanism for my ADHD. I tend to forget things, so my anxiety is there to tell me to write things down, pack far in advance and set alarms. Since I can't keep track of time my anxiety makes me constantly look at the clock when I need to be on time for something. The anxious energy can be diverted to tasks that my ADHD really doesn't want to do.

That’s been my experience as well. I went undiagnosed for most of my life, and I think I coped by drumming up and using anxious energy in order to function. It’s like self-medicating with your own stress hormones. It was a somewhat effective method, but an awful way to live. Now that I know that I have ADHD and am being treated, I’m working on rewiring myself, so I don’t habitually default to that anxious state.

Personal experience, not scientific evidence I've seen: IMO anxiety is not just a side effect of ADHD, but can also be a coping mechanism. I spent my life anticipating failure and turned out to be a successful overachiever by trying to "keep the wolves from the door". It's a risky game with a high chance of burnout. Since my diagnosis. I have lowered my expectations and catastrophic less. Quality of life has improved, but I definitely get less s**t done. An observation by one of the social media clips that people with ADHD who seem successful, also often seem "highly strung" points in the same direction.
@Elspm

Yeah, when I felt like I was found to die and/or accidentally kill someone every day I was more successful. But I was also a total wreck with regular suicidal ideation over how I was definitely going to kill someone by making a mistake at work. Since diagnosis, although meds help, I struggle with dedication ti work because I haven't been suffering with anxiety anything like to the same extent.

Such an enlightening video! ❤ I've experienced first hand that getting phychotherapy for anxiety somewhat reduced my executive function problems, but only partly; the remaining executive problems only got better when I was later diagnosed with and treated for ADHD. Apart from the two mechanisms you describe of how ADHD predisposes for anxiety (problems with emotion regulation plus cumulative failures), I've experienced two other ways ADHD increased my anxiety: one is that, due to my bad short-term memory (which is probably due to distractability), I used to get anxiety because I couldn't remember whether I had checked in when boarding my daily train, etc. This went away when ADHD medication improved my memory. The other mechanism is that the ADHD makes my line of thought associate much more easily to other things, which is great when being creative, but when I was anxious, my thoughts could get from a small worry to all sorts of catastrophes much more quickly than when taking the ADHD medication. I could go from "that guy on the bus looks angry", and a few seconds later I had mentally pictured both getting in a fight with him, ending up in court, being jailed, etc. Mindfulness and ADHD medication helped a lot with this, because now I become aware of my thoughts running away with me, where earlier I didn't have the capacity for taking this metacognitive look at myself, so I would just end up wherever my thoughts took me.

The CDS link to anxiety is ringing my bell... My biggest struggle in uni has always been just that. If I'm not stressed, I'm super creative in my analysis and I can explain complex multiaxial relationships. I have a really hard time actually sitting down to do my term papers without stress but my head feels like the nothingness of space when i'm stressed. I'm currently 12 years into therapy and trial & errors with medication with 70mg vyvanse, 300mg Wellbutrin (burnout and depression), 2mg Guanfacine (current trial run). It's a challenging experience that's for sure...

After watching the video, I believe I fall into the one category that is believed to NOT be connected, this being the 'classic anxiety' coming last, and in response to everything else, especially insofar as how quickly I deteriorated early 2023, just after two recent and successive negative workplace events in the proceeding few months (one being that I was sacked for having had a few sick days, and terminated without any warnings, whilst I was still on sick leave!), which left me with EXTREME trust issues, and then a case of Agoraphobia, which I've NEVER had! The previous 'anxiety' I did have, was from an original workplace dispute 10 years ago, which left me 'damaged', but still functional, if a bit battered, but nowhere near what occurred last March, which simply began as feeling nervous driving (and I used to be a courier, so no problems there) and one day in the new job, after there was 'trust' issues arising over payroll problems, I woke up one day and simply could not face work! It went downhill from there. Despite not having worked for over 18 months, (although I have have several legal conflicts to deal with in relation to previous events), I remain on a 'hair trigger' response, and unable to do much of anything which produces the slightest amount of stress without experiencing cognitive reduction. I think what has occurred is complete burnout! I used to do busy courier work, and hospitality and call centre customer service work without issue...then it ALL stopped dead in it's tracks! Several months after my burnout, early mid 2023, I was diagnosed with ADHD and ASD. To be honest, I do not know who is correct, and why such things were not diagnosed over 10 years ago when the first thing occurred. To me, it seems only once I have hit rock bottom, and become completely broken, it got figured out, which makes me wonder how my life may have been so much different, had I been diagnosed/treated many years ago.

Thank you for this video! I am a late diagnosed autistic (at the age of 41) and anxiety was the core of my existence since childhood. I came to learn to mask and deny it so effectively that even I do not believe myself that it is sometimes very serious and just plain exhausting. Only the diagnosis opened up my eyes that I have to take things more seriously and try to protect myself from excessive stress and stimuli. I underwent ADHD diagnosis as well as it seemed very familiar to me especially the inattentive presentation (although CDS might be a better fit), but it turned out that although there are strong tendencies, these are not enough to fulfill the diagnostic criteria of ADHD and the hardships I experience in attention and functionality is better explained by ASD. At least current medication (50mg/d fluvoxamine) seems to help with anxiety, I also can be somewhat more in the present and not constantly worrying about future or past events.

This was very insightful. I have been diagnosed with ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, and OCPD. As well as having very intense PPD with 3 pregnancies. When i was in grade school i took Adderall but stopped as an adult thinking i could manage fine since i didnt like the sluggish feeling it gave me. For about 4 years I had strong intrusive suicidal thoughts that would affect me 15+ times a day CBT helped decrease that significantly but I never found ssri's to help. Finally i decided to try something to help my ADHD again because i was struggling staying on task at work. Suddenly the atomoxetine i was trying made a huge improvement for me. I found that once my adhd was being treated all the comorbidity especially the OCPD became soooo much more manageable! I still struggle with the anxiety and am looking for ways to improve it. I just started taking some herbal supplements for this. Wishing everyone luck on their journey of takling their mental illness/s ❤

Can you discuss (or direct me to previous video/resources that cover) ADHD with comorbid OCD? Specifically I am wondering if stimulant medication can worsen OCD, though I know it's more likely that treating ADHD can "untangle" symptoms from comorbid disorders and make remaining symptoms more obvious. Also, if ADHD and "pure O" OCD (misnomer) are more commonly co-morbid. I saw a very compelling video about a theory that untreated/misunderstood ADHD in childhood (where symptoms had to be suppressed with maladaptive coping) can cause OCD and I really relate to that. It's already been studied that OCD onset is significantly earlier in people with ADHD. Anyway, I trust you more than any other authority on ADHD but I couldn't find a lot from you on OCD.

Could CDS be triggered by anxiety in someone with ADHD, so they become withdrawn and instead of seeking external stimulation they self-stimulate through day dreaming? Perhaps the specific self-aggrandizing or revenge centred nature of the fantasies are chosen to produce heightened emotional responses similar to risk taking external behaviours. Just an interesting thought.
@YWoods18

I would say this works the other way around for me. I love my daydreams. I’m traveling the world, trying out different occupations, dropping everything to go live on a farm in the middle of nowhere… I think my daydreaming is a response to boredom. I think dysregulation and executive functioning challenges keep me from snapping out of it. Anxiety comes from the realization that an hour has passed and I am now so far behind on my schedule I so painstakingly worked hard to create to avoid that exact scenario!

What is the utility in creating a separate diagnosis called CDS? is it different treatment? I have social phobia developed from bullying, and i tend to get mind wandering when I'm bored with the current task, but then I'll get antsy and restless and want to do my current obsessive hobby and totally neglect my day job. It seems to happen from an internal mental process, not exterior. Unless the fact that I'm working from home is making the temptation too great. Anyway, I'm confused now.

My psychiatrist blatantly ignored my concern. Told me it’s not ADHD. To ignore this or pay 1200 euros for assessment as they don’t deal with adult adhd. I will now have to seek a private assessment. I’m not happy. I’m being treated for depression/anxiety steroline 100mg. My intrusive thoughts have gone but my anxiety has gone through the roof! I still have detrimental symptoms of adhd. I’m 50 and he said it’s toolate, that my brain has already done its work and now I need cognitive therapy? Sick of being fobbed off.

I wonder if SSRI’s can trigger cognitive disengagement in susceptible people. When I tried taking an SSRI I had this bizarre reaction that felt like my brain just shut down. I honestly thought I might be having a stroke, but thankfully everything checked out ok and I was fine once I stopped the medication. I couldn’t find any mention of this side effect in the literature, apart from “sleepiness”, which doesn’t really express the severity of my experience. But it was such an odd feeling that I imagine it would be hard to report or document systematically.

Does anyone with mentally hyperactive ADHD plays vidéo games/computer games (liek sudoku) extensively to channel their mind ? I think my dad is AuDHD but in denial (or even unable to figure himself out), and as he gets older, he's become pretty much unable to take initiatives (even like "there's no more bread, I'll go buy some) and spends a LOT of time playing sudoku. It's as if his mind resorts to playing sudoku as soon as there is nothing channeling it (like eating, a few routines, or someone asking him something), it's sad to see.

It's sad to see.

@@guillaumebousquet5138 Yes, it looks quite similar. Unless there's some narcissism I'm missing, I keep thinking it's AuDHD with denial or even zero cerebral ability to understand it. He's not much interested in life anymore except through the news, rambling about wars and Putin and all the bad things happening in the world, seemingly not able to focus on his life and family to create nice things. IMHO it's due to the "dopaminergic lock" of ADHD ("verrou dopaminergique" en français), a process that kind of prevents the individual from acting accordingly to what's good for him (in the mid/long run), just because the brain can't detect instant gratification. Overtime the gratification threshold would get higher and higher to the point where pretty much nothing seems worth doing (or the slightest annoyance seems enormous and discouraging) giving a behaviour (doing nothing) that is disconnected from the speech (I don't have a problem, I'm fine). Only things that bring instant gratifivation are alcohol (he drinks 2 to 4 glass per meal), forcefeeding himself with news, sudoku that probably channels his hyperactive mind, and that's about it. I realize work was probably the backbone of his life, taking most of the time and leaving just a few hours to fill with hobbies, but now that he's retired it shows how unable he is to structure his own life and take initiatives, except a few routines. There should be a process to signal and get those persons to make mendatory ADHD tests, because the families are enduring a crap life.

@@guillaumeb6698 I'm pretty good at pattern recognition and there's a strong link between unmanaged ADHD and unhealthy egotism (as a complex anxiety-coping strategy, very hard to dismantle). I only call it narcissism if I know for sure that it's rooted in malevolence and stemming from trauma. About our dads, the key elements from my point of view are: 1) Inability to structure life outside of work context. 2) Addiction to mind-numbing and mind-channeling activities (alcohol, news, games). 3) Inability to connect with others. 4) Overall disheartening of self and others, minimizing the impact of cultivating interests, criticism of novelty. 5) Tendency to want to be left alone. Man, our dads have very similar behaviours. Mine is 70 years old. I believe he was mostly motivated by fear and urgency throughout his life, with low self-esteem. The way he grew up, he couldn't show feelings, he wasn't taught how to deal with failure, he didn't believe in collaboration or even receiving help. I try my best to be compassionate and whenever he gets too toxic, I give him the gift of my absence.

"Treating classic anxiety symptoms can feedback to improve adhd symptoms to an extent" This is horrible. Understand me correctly. It is part of the mechanism that will uphold a wrong diagnose, and in turn exclude people from proper effective treatment. It is good that it's recognized in papers. I'll have to say better late than never though. People have been excluded from ADHD diagnose, and it has been explained by stuff like depression and anxiety disorders. For those who have been tossed back and forth in this system it sounds pretty strange that each of these disorders are so simple to diagnose and seperate from each other. They are not - not for everyone that diagnose them. In theory it might be simple, while in practice it depends on the competence of the person and team that diagnose. Back on point: "Patient is responding to anxiety treatment"

you claim we can treat anxiety with meds and they wouldnt do anythjing to ADHD , how ??! some meds if not all SSRI and SNRI if they dont completely inhibit the dopamine effect from stims , they surely have a reduction effect to a certain extent almost in every med , it makes sense with the competition with regards to blocking the liver enzymes , take prozac for example and paxil , cyp2d6 I think they block it and so ritalin for example is ioneffective , same thing with adderall , so really , how non-affecting and not adhd-symptom worsening are anti-anxiety meds ??

So let me get this right. You are not a medical doctor ie psychiatrist who specialises in diagnosis of ADHD. You simply have a basic degree with an extra year or 2 to do a thesis UNDER SUPERVISION. Having worked in the science field and see the extra a phd student does, I see first hand it does NOT make them an expert in the field. That would explain the omissions you have made I the few videos I have watched of yours that DO NOT even touch ADHD found late in life after misdiagnosed with depression and anxiety which is so typical of how women have been treated over generations. You have missed the point how ADHD can relate to trauma (not just in childhood but reoccurring in similar pattern throughout 7 decades. Then again, you are talking learned text books just like the men who did the same and have been misdiagnosing people like me adbauseum. You people don't consider outliers. They had to be pidgeoned holed ticking all boxes (until the next DSM or text book comes out. ADHD knowledge has been evolving for a long time. How else do you explain the explosion in society now. Oh that's right the predessors were WRONG or didn't know as much and given your age, how many did YOU miss or misdiagnose in since you got your little phd?? So how can you say NOW you've got all the answers. At least in Dr Mateo's youtube with Mel Robbins finally clicked why I am as I am and probably my daughter now is thinking ADHD at. 45. You old guys missed me and at 70 it is too late. I'm too far down the decades of drugs that didn't work at me, therapy mostly I couldn't connect with as it was directed at people with depression and mild anxiety. I give up now. No strength to go back to waste of space incompetent psychiatrist and start teaching him what I've learned!! So easy to get mental health provider bits of paper and then just sit there ignoring new things that comealong. Then again. Who am I. Just an old woman who society counts as nothing. We are invisible and collateral damage just like in Covid years that detailed the number dead each day on the news with a BUT x number were in nursing homes or old with other medical problems. We didn't count then and we don't count now. We missed the boat. Shame on all the mental health lrofession, both little fish with a phd and the ones make g mega bucks for doing nothing ie psychiatrists. I bet you didn't have a single twin set in all the trials you cite as science that mimicked my journey and only a minuscule time of follow up years Definitely not half my age and diagnosed by the only text books they had, not even looking for outliers which could further change what we know of ADHD at the moment. This is so triggering I can't watch any more of your videos if I want to stay safe😢
