Much needed. I've been struggling with my anxiety more than usual the past few weeks as well. It's causing me to just completely stop and procrastinate my life in general. Thank you as always!

This was an amazing conversation. I get so frustrated when Christian’s assume anxiety or depression means you either a. Don’t have faith & need to go seek deliverance or b. Are in active rebellion against God and need someone to help you get to the root of the sin issue. While portions of those can be true it’s not always- this conversation helped me understand my feelings in light of the gospel. Thank you!

I so needed this. I struggle with depression and anxiety. So funny you brought up Ecclesiastes--that has always been one of my favorite books (and that makes me laugh in the best possible way). So grateful for you guys. Thank you for being vulnerable and for ministering to me (to us all). Thank you, most of all, for pointing us to Christ--our only Hope.

Wow! Timely message here. I used to struggle a lot with anxiety, depression and even panic attacks when I was younger and thought I had a good handle on it. But lately, now 20 years on, I have been feeling it all coming back on me and it is concerning. I don’t want to spiral down to the bottom that I was back then. My spiritual walk and maturity is so much deeper now than it was then so I don’t understand why I’m having all these dark hopeless thoughts and feelings all of a sudden again. I know the Lord is allowing it for a reason, and eventually I will understand, just like happened back then, but I don’t like it at all.

Anxiety, depression and panic attacks are mental illnesses. Stop spiritualizing them. Go see a psychiatrist and get help. When Christians get a physical illness, they go see a doctor but when they become mentally ill, they think it has to do with their faith and their walk. Just go see a doctor.

This is a great, balanced, realistic approach to this topic that will bless many. As a believer who has dealt with these types of issues for over 25 years, I wish I could have heard something like this earlier in my life. However, God has lead me to these same conclusions through other means. I’m grateful for the work y’all do!

Thank you brothers for this timely wisdom from the Lord. I have been in the torrents of mental anguish as if a storm is passing and those whom love you and you love are speaking to you in the wind of that and not feeling as I can hear nor be heard. There is a depth of a sense that it can seem to be like a Vaccum… but truly is it not, the pain is knowing that the suffering will end but not knowing when, except to hold fast to the promises of Christ… it’s hard to cling to the rock when sometimes the strength is just mental ascent to who I am not and resting in who God is… I love his nearness yet I dislike the removal of my strength to reside in Him and to know the Spirit resides in me is just overwhelming. We don’t need a life jacket we have Christ… we have life, sometimes the difficulties of it overwhelms, but His sufficiency always prevails!

I wish Justin would elaborate on how he knows he is saved because he heard the shepherds voice. I think this is a great way to know assurance that I feel is lacking that even MacArthur,RC Sproul etc never touch on and yet it’s so basic.

17:00 take note that David always encouraged himself in the Lord in the Psalms. Means we need to remind ourselves of who God is and who we are in Christ, do I have to add identity and promises?

Anxiety is the result of trauma, either emotional or physical. Physical trauma is something that doesn't always heal completely. As a result, the impact symptom of anxiety has nothing to do with a spiritual condition for these instances.

I have been to church for over 40 years. I professed to know Jesus, but the way I lived would say differently. I am now 65 and living in awful pain. I have very much seen the error of my ways. I have now turned to Jesus as my Lord and savior. But I live in total fear that I am too late. There is a great deal more to the story, but I am finding it hard to believe that he will have me. I find myself not being able to have faith that there is still grace for me. I live in fear.

Brother- thief on the cross… it’s only too late when Christ’s second coming has happened. Be amazed by his amazing grace. God is not bound by time and knew you and all that you would and will do and died for that too. The only thing you contribute to your salvation is the sin that made it necessary. Be of good cheer!

Fear not brother, you are blood bought! Your eternity is secure in him bc he paid for it! Receive his love for you, slow your mind, and know that the good father that he is, loves you and does not abandon us according to what we have done in our lives. His arms are ALWAYS open to you, and he showed that very truth, on the cross. I pray the Lord comforts you and assures you. God bless

God is merciful to those who fear him and tremble at his word. And Jesus said that if we keep his commandments and if we keep his word, that the Spirit will be sent to us, and that he and his Father will make their home with us (John 14:15-23ish). It's not healthy to live in morbid fear as though God's wants to hurt us. But not all the fear you experience is bad. It means you take seriously the word of God. You can hear his warnings, which many today cannot. It is not too late as long as we are alive and have the chance to repent. Just trust God and in faith put the commandments of Jesus into practice no matter the cost. Be like Abraham and do whatever Jesus' tells us. Do it in the fear of God, in love for God, and in love for neighbor. And if you struggle with your motives, do it anyway and be honest with God about what's going on inside of you. But do not listen to any nonsense about how all you need to do is rest in his grace and lay back and wait until all your motives we are just right. Jesus said things that are intended to put the fear of God in us. They are meant to sober us up. Those who have ears to hear will awaken and do whatever Jesus says with urgency. Those who can't hear his voice will relax and be deceived into thinking that they will be fine no matter what they do. He loves you and wants you to be one of his faithful sons and servants. Just go for it.
@stephengoff21896 ай бұрын
@@thomasalbinholmes2538 Nonsense about rest? Seriously.. His finished work is what allows us to rest… You’re the like other people who are like, “no can’t just put blood over the door, and trust in the blood, no you have keep his commandments AND put blood over the door…” The blood of Jesus alone is acceptable and is what makes us holy and acceptable before God. I choose rest over law keeping, any day Cain. Stop putting burdens on people as if Christ is expecting something from them…all he wants is their trust and belief and you come in on your zealous horse. Get out. Stop calling the shepherd’s lazy bc you’re out there “working in the field”. Romans 4 King James Version 4 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. 6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, 7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. 9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. Here is something about Abraham, he had to beat back the fouls of the air. From the prince and powers of the air…which is a picture of the doctrine of demons… So we are..stop!! Stop putting demands on people. Christ blotted out the law and the ordinances that were contrary to us. The law can hold no accusations whose faith is in the blood of the lamb. 🩸 period.
@thomasalbinholmes25386 ай бұрын
@@stephengoff2189 thanks for at least engaging with me. After they put the blood on the lamb on the door, did they just have to sit back and do nothing? No they had to get up and walk out of Egypt. They had to pass through the sea. And what happened next? Did they all enter the promised land? No. Please read 1 Corinthians 9:24 - 10:14. Most of them perished because they were disobedient, sexually immoral, they grumbled and indulged in revelry. They looked back to Egypt. And Paul says that what happened to them was a warning to US - new covenant believers. The blood of Jesus is meant to set us free from a much worse "Egypt" (sin) and a much worse "Pharaoh" (Satan). But his sacrifice does not guarantee our future entry into the Kingdom anymore than the passover lamb guaranteed their entry into the promised land - hence all the warnings that Theocast tries to explain away. We are now "in the wilderness" and must sober up and take this seriously. We must not neuter and defang the warnings that are meant to HELP US. Yes God is gracious and merciful. And he wants all of us to be saved. But the mouth of his Son has spoken - "not everyone who says to me Lord, Lord will enter, but only the one who does the will of my Father" and "if you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love." We can do his will if we are humble and obedient. He does not require perfection but humble obedience. This honest man who left this comment is reaching out for help. And what he needs to hear is not the message of reformed evangelical Protestantism. He needs the message of Jesus and the apostles. That will not only heal us and strengthen us, but will also produce fear and trembling. That is healthy. Romans 4 is wonderful news. We do not need to be circumcised and we do not need to keep the Law of Moses. But Paul is NOT saying that we do not need to obey the law of CHRIST (distinct from the Law of Moses) in order to remain on the Vine (John 15:1-10). The Israelites didn't need to do anything initially to be set free from Egypt. But they did need to be faithful after that in order to remain in the grace of God. Paul tells us to remain in God's grace in Acts 13:43 and 2 Cor 6:1. And he tells us to remain in his kindness in Romans 11:22. If we mess up as Christians, it doesn't mean we are lost and without hope. But we need to get up, repent, and follow Jesus. We cannot think that Romans 4 means we can casually coast along and know that we're going to enter the kingdom without condition. Is that how Paul lived? Friend who left the comment, please just forget all this stuff you're listening to here and return to Matthew chapter 1, and allow Jesus to rewire you. He is a much better guide than anyone you will find on KZbin.

As those that belong to Christ, is there reason for our suffering? We should see it differently as we are suffering, it is not just random for those that belong to Him. What God allows as in the life of Job, we see Jobs suffering from a different point of view that Job could not know by sight or experience but by faith, faith that He has a father in heaven. For the believers God is working for our good, correcting, guiding, disciplining, trusting, enduring etc. that we would be salt and light as our God refines His Church. The world is watching us as we cling to Christ in our times of need. If only we like Job could say. Job 42:1-6 Then Job answered the LORD and said: “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. ‘Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you make it known to me.’ I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” One day very soon we will see that God is good.

This is all well and good but not once in this 40 min talk is there any mention of seeking professional help. Anxiety and depression are mental illnesses and like all illnesses, there are doctors and treatments for them. Just imagine a person getting a stroke and all you do is to tell him that he needs to be grounded in the objective reality of his faith.

@@kickpublishingas someone who struggles with anxiety and is in counseling for it, I agree!!! We can treat mental ailments like physical ones as if we totally understand physical ones… as if there isn’t any correlation to the soul and mind… it’s funny how if we make something spiritual we tend to assume there aren’t physical components. I don’t think anyone totally understands it all… except God who made us and by his grace gave us wisdom and skills etc… I tire of trying to separate suffering in categories to medicate as if that’s the only answer… thank you for expressing Justin and John’s sentiments and advocating for those of us who see more to it than just a binary medical vs spiritual!

You just have invented the wheel and you have just named it Reformed and/or Calvinism
@thomasalbinholmes25386 ай бұрын
One of the problems with this way of thinking is that it indoctrinates people against so much of what Jesus and the apostles say. In many, many passages we are warned and motivated with the fear of God, self preservation, the prospect of not being saved in the future. Conditional language the Word of God uses IN ADDITION to the comforting aspects and the promises. All of it together is what we need. The promises are for those who respond in obedient faith. And anyone, imcluding those with anxiety, CAN DO THAT. But when you make it sound like there are no conditions, like everythings going to be fine no matter what, and when people then embrace that unbalanced, unbiblical way of thinking, so much of what Jesus and the apostles say will then sound like "works righteousness" or like the sort of thing judgmental Pharisees would say. And then people are forced to interpret their words in unnatural ways and take the teeth out of them. Jesus is not a harsh task master. But he does lay down some conditions, and he does paint a very serious picture about the reality we live in and the need to take this extremely seriously. And the answer for people who have anxiety is not to mislead them into thinking that everything's going to be okay NO MATTER WHAT, but to get them into a Master-disciple relationship with Jesus. THAT is the context in which people are healed and strengthened, and in which they learn to believe and teach all Jesus said, not explaining it away or running from its sobering implications. Its when you stand with Jesus and SAY WHAT HE SAID, not nullifying it or explaining it away, that you are strengthened and comforted by true intimate fellowship with him, rather than deceiving yourself and giving yourself false assurance through something like reformed theology.
