Hi Tom, I have a 4 yo female German Shepherd. Came from a farm to my Mom and me when she was 16 weeks old. Came trained to walk beside my Mom using her walker w/out pulling or getting under her feet. She quickly learned how to do things to help my Mom like pick up an item from the floor so Mom didn't have to bend and risk a fall. She can open doors, hit light switches etc. She was with her all the time. My Mom died last June. I watched Libby slip into depression which has now turned to aggression toward anyone that dares to even look at me. I love her so much. The vet said she lost her best friend and her job at the same time. We have tried antidepressants, not much help. I have a behaviorist that I've done 2 zoom calls with to train and prep me. We are meeting in person with Libby later this month, somewhere hopefully nobody else will be. She thinks since my dog came from working dogs that she will always need a job. Thoughts? Ppl tell me to get a puppy for her, but I think she would be jealous at this point.

@@antoniohenrique7966 She is doing much better. We've been doing different confidence building exercises going out in public. I do use an e-collar but so far I've only needed to use the vibrate mode. And I just use it to get her attention to look at me so I can tell her but mainly I try to stand up really straight and let her know that I'm in charge so she doesn't need to be worried about anything.

Tom I just found your channel but it's absolutely great! I waa raised with GSDs and my dad and grandpa taught me almost all the training methods you use. It's just instinctive to me now. People seem genuinely amazed when they warn me about their "mean" dogs and I have them laying at my feet within 15 or so minutes. Keep putting out your videos. People need to understand how to instruct dogs properly and responsibly. Less will end up in kill shelters that way and that's something we should all be working towards ending.

Max was very reactive, lovely but once he saw a Male he transformed into an aggressive dog. I has him since he was 8 weeks old. He never has been abused by any male. He has improved with the techniques I have learned in your videos. TY

Where can I get one of those "DO NOT TOUCH MY DOG" shirts? I've tried googling, and looking at both of your shops, not seeing anything as simple and direct as that. I'm about to start carrying a wiffle bat and going ham on these strangers that think we're a walking petting zoo, lol. I never had this problem when I owned pit bulls, at least not with anyone over the age of two, sheesh!

Plastic pinch is a lighter touch. For an anxious dog, the herm Springer can cause more problems than it solves. The point is to show the dog a correct, and let him learn how to do better. Minimal correction is all that's needed. Just enough to get the message through.I actually used a leather and chain Martingale the same way he did with the same results on a dog with a similar background
@johncspine2787
@johncspine2787 10 ай бұрын
You can get the same results, the touch is a little different. I think Tom always tries to use the lightest methods first, and gauges what’s going to be effective for the problem at hand..

Great video Tom. With time and patience, any dog can learn structure and obedience. Good to see this handsome boy is on the right path now. I'm making progress with my 2-year-old female rescued GSD while I wait for the COVID-19 restrictions to lift and obedience classes to restart, hopefully in early June in South Australia. She will benefit from being around other dogs and people, so she becomes sociable, hopefully. She understands what the "leave it" command means and is starting to comply, especially when she barks at strange men she sees on the walk. I think her previous owner, a man, was her main abuser, but with me, our bond is progressing well, she comes and licks my face every time she wakes up in the morning, and her tail wags in a frantic happy gesture. I have endless patience with her even when she threw up a little bit the other day, I just reassured her it was ok, it was an accident and just cleaned it up without any fuss being made. We have a lot of playtimes, for some reason when she lays on her back and I rub her belly, she loves gently biting my fingers. I can play with her mouth and teeth and she just bites them gently, fully understanding its a game and is never boisterous or vicious. I think I have hit the jackpot with her, she is such a beautiful dog.

I've made the exact same observations about harnesses. A flat collar was useless, and ignored. The back harnesses let me physically hold him, but not control or guide him. Front harnesses are a bit better but I found that they actually made him More anxious. The martingale was the best collar for my reactive dog. I get that communication that the pinch collar gives, but it's a softer touch for a sensitive, fearful dog. He now walks calmly most of the time

Boomer is our GS. He’s at a board and train program now. 1 year old. had a very scary situation with him a few months ago with my daughter. He has been in training for 6 weeks now, super stubborn. I’m hoping with everything in me that this training really helps. Nugget is our rescue- pit/lab mix. 2 years old. She is perfect except for extreme resource guarding her food (only aggressive towards other dogs, not at all towards humans) Jalapeño is our golden. She is also one year old and also pretty perfect except she picks fights with the other two dogs that she definitely cannot win and has actually had to get staples from being attacked by Nugget (we feed them separately and put the food away outside of meal time) but this was over one piece of food we didn’t notice on the floor on the side of the washer) boomer tends to play super rough and when she gets tired of it she gets aggressive but he also wins those spits by pinning her down until she submits which is not a quick process- this is where her name comes from because even as a puppy she did not let the other 2 push her around. we were always saying “she’s a spicy little girl.” The worst damage he’s done was to her paw which did not require vet attention. I don’t really have a specific question. Just venting. I do love your channel so much. I wish I had your understanding in dog behavior because I feel like I’m in over my head a lot of the time.

You are a great trainer and also so good at explaining what you're doing and why even for the novice who might be listening which is fantastic. I've seen trainers unable to get their point across properly. I really enjoy your videos so Mahalo for sharing. I especially enjoy watching the unspoken language between you and the dogs or just the dogs when they interact with one another. Mahalo for what you do, Tom Davis!

Do you think you could do a video and just talk about some of the things you use and how to put them on or what they are used for, like the collar you used in this video or what type of leash and things you probably shouldn’t use in training?

Hi Tom could you tell something about choke chain. Why don't you prefer it?

I just ordered this for our German Shepherd that we rescued/found roaming the streets. No chip and her collar was welded with two metal chains. The rope where you attach the leash looks different. Did you replace the original rope? Can't wait to try this collar on her as the Gentle Leader has not helped.

I've been out of the loop for a while... Do you like the plastic pinch collars better? Our GSD yelps with the slightest correction on her herm sprenger 2.5mm collar. She's a runt so the 2.5mm is an appropriate size

Where can I get that collar ? Been searching but only find cheap versions of it or ones made from metal and I like the triangle shape of the inside which looks better and doesn’t hurt a dog that much

I have a question. What would be your recommendation on what to do when a dog nips when it’s get too excited. For example around 8:30 you used rough patting and a higher tone to engage with the dog. My year and half old ACD will get super excited and nip your hand and arm. I will immediately discontinue affection and move away from her. I usually try to only use calm energy while petting her but sometimes she still seems to nip. And yes I know some people will say it’s her breed to nip but she was never allowed to play rough with people and she does get plenty of exercise and does get to herd. TIA.
