Lyrics
I closed my eyes
Drew back the curtain
To see for certain
What I thought I knew
Far, far away
Someone was weeping
But the world was sleeping
Any dream will do
I wore my coat (I wore my coat)
With golden lining
Bright colors shining
Wonderful and new
And in the east (and in the east)
The dawn was breaking
And the world was waking
Any dream will do
A crash of drums, a flash of light
My golden coat flew out of sight
The colors faded into darkness
I was left alone
May I return (may I return)
To the beginning
The light is dimming
And the dream is too
The world and I (the world and I)
We are still waiting
Still hesitating
Any dream will do
A crash of drums, a flash of light
My golden coat flew out of sight
The colors faded into darkness
I was left alone
May I return (may I return)
To the beginning
The light is dimming
And the dream is too
The world and I (the world and I)
We are still waiting
Still hesitating
Any dream will do
Any dream will do
(Any dream, any dream, any dream)
Any dream will do
(Any dream, any dream, any dream)
Any dream will do
(Any dream, any dream, any dream)
----
In the summer of 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber was asked by Alan Doggett, head of the Music Department at Colet court, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew immediately approached his friend Tim Rice to ask if he would write lyrics for the project. After toying with ideas about spies, 007′s and the like, Tim suggested the story of Joseph.
The first performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was on a cold winter afternoon on 1st March 1968 at the Old Assembly Hall, Colet Court, Hammersmith.
Accompanied by the School orchestra and conducted by Alan Doggett, the performance was only 15 minutes long.
It was such a success that a second performance was arranged on 12th May 1968 at Central Hall, Westminster, where Andrew’s father was the organist. Julian Lloyd Webber gave a classical recital in the first half, along with Bill Lloyd Webber. The audience of approximately 2,500 consisted mainly of parents of the Colet Court boys. To Andrew and Tim’s surprise, Derek Jewell, Jazz and Pop Critic for The Sunday Times, saw the show and wrote a favourable review of Joseph, which appeared on 19th May 1968. A third performance took place on 9th November 1968 at St Paul’s Cathedral, where Joseph was expanded to include songs such as ‘Potiphar’ for the first time.

But you'd probably know that the DVD version is low pitched compared to the VHS. That's because of PAL and NTSC audio differences. Or in production terms, difference in FPS (Frames Per Second).

I get the feeling from this scene that the narrator could also represent Joseph's Mom. She died before this story happened, and her spirit is seeing her son and his struggles. In this song Joseph is able to feel her spirit watching over him.

Watching this movie, I was always confused with Joseph and the narrator's relationship. There were parts when she looked jealous Joseph was getting attention from all those woman who were fawning over him when he was with the Pharaoh. And then this song, when they're singing together, she looks at him like she's in love with him and he looks at her like he's just seeing her for the first time or something. Maybe I read too much into it, I don't know, but it always weirded me out

Okay someone explain to me the moral of Joseph’s story? Is there one? Because he starts the musical, poor like his brothers, wanting to be a dreamer and help people achieve their dreams, but in the process of becoming a slave, thrown in jail, and then getting filthy rich, remembering his brothers and getting back with his father again, he’s mentally back where he started in terms of his morals...right? Don’t @ mate, I utterly adore the numbers in this musical. Don’t be right wing? 😂😂 Don’t let your spoilt childhood define your life? Treat your brothers with respect? What is is?!
