Any Fox Will Do

It's time to mount up and see if we can whistle in a few Foxes. With the Sako .222 in hand and my new BA-X12 shotgun loaded with 42g's of BB's the foxes should be in strife. That is if they decide to play the game.

Haven't laughed like that in awhile lads. I just moved back to the country after living and working in Sydney for the last 10 years, feels great to be back in the country again. I know my old man's place out near Wagga has a heap of foxes, so I'm looking forward to whistling a few and putting my Tikka .222 to work.

Always good to have the whistle in hand with the T2 being very convenient having two options in one. If If I had to pick one whistle the tenterfield style always has the best carry but sometimes that can be a bad thing if you are not good at using it at lower volume. For close in work we often fall back to a metal button whistle but the little trumpet part of the T2 usually gets preference to this. Either way, if the Foxes aren't there it's not going to matter what you are using. Thanks for watching and all the best for 2023.

We tried quite a lot of different calls with no result. The only fox we saw was the one we shot. Normally you'd see a couple in the paddocks or get the odd one run off but not a thing I'm afraid. If they're not there it doesn't matter what calls you have😒

I’ve only hunted foxes at night, what’s it like calling them in daytime? Are they more hungry and willing during the day?

Calling foxes during the day is usually very productive especially over the summer months but if they’re not there nothing’s going to work. When there’s a few around it’s not uncommon to have multiple targets running in together. We’ve actually had a Feral cat running at the same time as a fox. The fox looked at the cat and backed off, good move for the fox but not so good for the cat 🤣😂. Always worth having a whistle around your neck whether it be day or night👍

Another strain of the Calicivirus was released in the areas we hunt a few years ago. The Rabbits have been all but wiped out since and haven't recovered. They are resilient and I'm sure they will breed up again over time. The fox numbers have dropped since majority of farmers have swapped from sheep to cattle and the rabbits have fallen away. All part of the challenge.

My pleasure mate. That is the million dollar question. In our hunting locations the rabbit numbers are usually at their peak late spring/early summer. The hot weather over summer use to allow the mosquitoes and fleas to spread myxomatosis which would reduce the numbers considerably by Easter. This process use to repeat every year with big numbers in Spring. Since the release of this last Calicivirus strain we have noticed the more rocky hilly country that we hunt has had the breeding cycle broken. There are still plenty of rabbits around the colder and coastal sandy areas which don't seem to be affected by the virus as much. Just my observations and as I've mentioned, rabbits are resilient and will never be completely wiped out in Australia.
