A few things more to check. The ground wire connection at the top of the sender assembly might also have a bad connection. Get a meter and check it there and the ground you just cleaned before pulling the tank. There is a resistor on the back of the gauge and some times they get a bad connection or go bad. The sender arm where it rubs the coil can be worn out too. There are videos of how to check if it it good.

It's probably the stepper-motor that is shot, if you didnt fix the problem already with cleaning the connection. Try to get at least half a tank in there and test it then
