Well played! I recently replayed this game and realized how OP the thief truly is.

Thank you. The thief was OP because its hide ability was bugged when inside caves (the status doesn't disappear after a hit as it's supposed to, letting you inflict x2 damage). Interestingly, I didn't know that as a kid. That lets you cheese through the game, regardless of whether you are speedrunning or playing casually.

@@withspeedFor real. The backstab damage also doubles all relevant bonuses so a Str 18 Thief with a +3 spear could do 14-24 points of damage. That’s busted OP but if it weren’t for that, the thief would be largely useless. 😅

Quite right. You'll notice we deliberately select roll no. 96 at the start (it's a fixed table), which grants you 18 strength. Then pick up the +2 sword: base damage is then 1d6+2 (3-8), +3 strength makes it 6-11, times two due to hide makes it 12-22. This run is highly optimised, it would be great to see someone try to beat it. If you are interested in a nearly-three-hours tutorial on how this speedrun works, send me a DM.

@@withspeed Oh I'll leave the speed runs to the professionals! 😅 I just like to play casual.

Wow I didn't know you could skip the swamp entirely!

Yeah, that's an odd one. The flag that lets you through to the next cave is turned on by stepping on the last tile in the dungeon before entering the swamp, not in the swamp itself... Which is a pity since the swamp is a really cool area.
