Miss Thailand and 1st runner up Miss Korea both are very pretty girls and found Miss Thailand the winner is not only a beautiful young lady here but also very well spoken and educated girl . Good choice for Miss Universe 1988!! It’s Late August 2023 as I watch this pageant online.❤️☺️🌺

Visited Taiwan from March 22 to 30, 2024. I was amazed it's here, in the swimsuit segment ,the National Palace Museum and the Yehliu Geopark. And the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in the opening parade shots. I never watched this pageant in full before.

One of the best pageants ever, gorgeous girls, choreography was the best, the musical and dancing part was excellent, it was a very good show, but unfortunately that year, the organization manipulated unfairly the final results putting 4 Oriental contestants among the 5 finals and leaving out the 2 huge favorites: USA and Dom. Republic. Thailand and Korea were beautiful and deserved to be among the 5 finalists but Japan and Singapore did not have the beauty nor presence to eliminate the 2 huge favorites.

What I love about Miss Universe winners growing up outside their home countries is that they embraced their culture with so much pride and grace. Miss Universe Porntip Bui Simon reminds me so much of Miss Universe Catriona Gray. They are an amazing advocates for children. Love that about them. ❤🇵🇭🇹🇭

I had Miss USA firmly in the Top 3 along with Miss Thailand and Miss Korea. Loved Miss Mexico, as well. I had Miss Hong Kong in 6th, just missing the Top 5. It is odd that Miss USA was so far out in front in the preliminaries, only to come in 8th(!) -- her interview segment was great and she came in 9th there, I believe. Made no sense. Miss Dominican Republic also did very well in prelims and missed the Top 5, as well.

The results of this event were fixed. I remember that once Fernando Allende, one of the judges, stated to the press that they were looking for an Asian as the new Miss Universe, that is why the Asian semifinalists ended up all as finalists.

Porntip was sweet and charming. Korea was a doll. Mexico was sincere and had a beautiful face. It would have been nice to see her become Mexico’s first Miss Universe instead of Lupita Jones three years later who became such a reptile and a disgrace to her country preparing future contestants the wrong way so that she would Mexico’s ONLY Miss Universe. Such an evil woman. Thailand deserved her win and was a great Miss Universe.

Definitely one of my favorite years. I know that people complain about the Asian countries dominating the top 5. It was refreshing because for so many pageants the Asian countries are ignored. Both Thailand and Korea were so elegant and graceful. I will admit it is shocking that the two contestants Miss USA and Miss Dominica Republic that were 1, 2 in the preliminaries both miss the cut to the top 5. I kept watching Dominican Republic, and it does appear that she looked a bit nervous including the evening gown, but I thought she was fine. I hated USA's dress, she wore that thing at the Miss USA pageant, while Miss Hong Kong's dress was one of the best I've seen (and probably what got her into the top 5). Japan, I had mixed feelings about, I mean the dress was cultural, but overall, just not sure. And let's face it, three of the semi-finalists were out from the beginning: Venezuela, Norway, and Colombia. I think Norway got underscored with her Evening Gown, I mean she wasn't that bad. They were scoring everything based on the bad interview. And speaking of dresses, what was up with Venezuela's, I thought Martians would be walking out behind her with that thing. Overall, I wanted Korea to win it so badly, but I knew Thailand would, and she was a very successful Miss Universe and did such great work. It does still bother me a bit that Miss Thailand is from the US where she grew up and lived in California. I really think you should only be able to compete in your own country. But that's fine, she was too good to pass up. It's kind of like Miss Yugoslavia in 1991, she grew up and lived in California.

Some years in the 1980s do not have a final question. This may explain why in some years, like in 1987 to 1989, the contestant who did well in the semifinals interview go on to win.

De las asiáticas solo la tailandesa criada en los angeles merecía estar entre las semifinalistas. Creo que ha sido la peor edición del concurso. El jurado mudo y ausente d la manipulación.
