It’s #NationalNutDay and we’re celebrating the #Kukui (Candlenut) with Kanka ʻŌiwi @IwalaniK! In Hilo, ʻIwa’s family is known for making Hawaiian food, and now she’s sharing her grandpa’s recipe for ʻInamona (roasted kukui nut relish) with us. Kukui was one of the most widely used plants by the Native Hawaiians. Kukui nuts were strung on a palm midrib and burned to make candles, hence its name “Candlenut Tree”. The sap from the nut could also be used medicinally to treat sore throats. Furthermore, the leaves and nuts of the Kukui could be used to make a lei. ʻIwa can make a beautiful lei from the kukui leaves, but today she is showing us how to make ʻInamona for Hawaiian Style #poke.
