Ao Oni | RPG Maker Horror

the japanese word for purple, murasaki, and the japanese words for blue and red as well (ao, aka respectively) are direct translations to english, but the colors japan recognizes by those names as a culture, are different from what we think of as those same color names. For example, something we might consider to be orange (a tiger for example) is called 'yellow' in japanese, while a basketball (also orange) might be called red... japanese has a word for orange... but rather than colors being mutually exclusive like in english, colors are like umbrella words that include and overlap with other colors in japanese. Orange can be yellow or red, and yellow and red could refer to something distinctly orange... Green is a subset of blue. (Japanese traffic lights are actually tinted blue explicitly because the traditional word used to refer to their green light is the older term for green things: ao (blue) rather than midori (green, or leaf-colored reading the kanji literally). The words Red and Blue in japanese, have no other meanings than those colors... but orange and green are named directly after specific objects, and they fall into the same category of colors as red ad blue. Murasaki is a type of purple that is generally very vibrantly purple-not-red-not-blue, but of course all colors have some bleedover so there are some murasaki and ao that are interchangeably named... however, the same murasaki that could be ao, is not necessarily the purple that could be blue (or indigo, if you actually even use that word. I find most english native speakers don't ever talk about indigo as its own color, and lump it in specifically as a type of blue, and never as a type of purple, but when asked, they would just call an indigo colored thing "blue" not indigo.) That may seem strange, but remember its not very long ago that orange wasn't part of the english language as a color... We just called it yellow-red... Orange is the name of a tree. A tree that has yellow-red apples growing from it. We call those orange apples "oranges" even though that's not what they are. We call yellow-red "orange" because "oranges" the apples of the orange tree, are the exemplar of the color yellow-red. An apple is any large berry that grows from a flowering tree. Oranges are apples. Apples are also apples. The orange is not the apple of the apple tree, but it is an apple. Language... my friend... language... is stupid. Don't try to make sense of it; no language makes sense. All you really need to do is get used to how a language doesn't make sense.

Couldn’t have a better first time seeing this game fully. I’m glad I didn’t see this back in 2012 or earlier, the Oni would’ve freaked me out despite being so simple in design. Although I do like how he catches onto the different hiding spots so you can’t abuse the same one over and over again, and now I always expect it to scream when he catches you or appears, but doesn’t, because this game can do proper horror.

The whole thing works like a game of oni (like hide and seek) where one person is the oni and everyone runs away from them, and if you are caught, you are now an oni. The only difference is that I think if an oni catches someone, they are not an oni anymore, though I may be wrong.

Definitely going to watch this later when I have an opportunity, this is one of those RPG Maker games that was a huge inspiration to many people. Also apparently there's a cheat code that turns the characters into South Park versions of themselves. I never knew about that until recently!

...This is giving me vibes of Clock Tower SNES. From the hilarious yet threating enemy, the way he appears (Semi random and with triggers) and the way you can attempt to escape it... To the very obtuse puzzle solutions, that only JUST ABOUT make sense once you put them together... I missed this originally due to not being a fan of horror games or those kind of LPs. But your playthroughs are always entertaining. Kudos to the developer though, cause you can see the enjoyment that went into making the game. Making a game so close to a Clock Tower style in RPG maker could not have been easy.

You can theoretically still play Flash games on some browsers, just not the major ones. Also, there is the "Bluemaxima Flashpoint" program that allow you to download and play many Flash games locally on the computer.
