Great. I’ve been playing with DADGAD for a while. Damh the Bard uses it a lot (I love his music). However want to do more and ultimately be able to join in when I next go to Feakle!

Do you recommend someone begins playing in standard tuning and get really good at that first, before trying alternate tuning? I consider myself somewhat of an an advanced beginner in standard tuning, but still so much to learn even at this level. BUT...I really am really drawn to the tuning you use here.

Hi TJ, good question. I started off in standard, but once I heard DADGAD tuning I knew it was the way I wanted to go. (Although I still love playing in Standard) There will always be something to learn, whatever tuning or instrument that you're playing. That's kind of the beauty of music. So I'd say go with what feels right for you. As long as you're having fun and enjoying the process you're on the right track. When I was starting off in DADGAD and didn't have a second guitar I just learned how to tune up and down pretty fast. I had a setlist of songs I played in Standard and a setlist of songs I played in DADGAD. So you don't have to choose one or the other. Skills you learn in one tuning will stand to you in the other. Be it dexterity, picking, strumming or groove. If you have any other questions just let me know. I'm happy to help. Best of luck with it all :)

It's a pity all those moveable shapes were not shown in the context of a chord progression or are all those shape substitutes for a D modal chord? Again, seeing them in context would have been useful.

Hi, the octave chord shapes should work for Irish tunes in the key of D. They are useful for following the tune and creating bass lines. For context here are two nice tunes in the key of D. I would try to subtly add in the octave movements throughout the tunes.
