Community game idea: TamerLAME. Everyone gets a Tamerlane instead of a scout. Boars are only non-farm-foodsource. There's not many, but each one is worth a LOT of food. Get MBL to play, obvs.

@@jcpkill1175 If there's going to be a game based on an extremely bad pun I made, then I think the game should use the actual Tamerlane from the scenario editor. :P But yeah, modifications are probably needed, so maybe the boars would be the best bet.

@@jcpkill1175 See I think the ranged aspect is potentially interesting, as it contrasts with path blocking - do you move and block or do you stay still and fire? I'm just spitballing here though, so add any ideas you have about laming, modding and so on :)

@@PavarottiAardvark Yea the ranged aspect is something that would be abused quite heavily if someone saw the potential in it to snipe vils. You need to make the scout based around laming soley and nothing else hence it would be more powerful to snipe a vil than lame a boar. Especially since you cant wall it out you are forced idle time if a ranged unit comes around dark age. With the units damage low so they cant easily kill villagers they can continue to force idle time and even under fire of another tamerlane wont take that much damage and can easily retreat.

Eagles don't need LOS nerfed; it makes up for the slower speed. I don't think there needs to be a laming nerf at all, but if one insisted on it the simplest solution is giving boars bonus attack against eagles and/or scouts. (In fact, HD did something like this.)

@T90Official, is there such a thing as a "burned earth" strategy, where you find your opponent super early and just kill all his sheep, deer and even boars instead of laming? Can this be viable or has it been done before?

Not viable, because the scout can't attack deer/sheep and is too weak to kill boars. For deers and boars you'd have to send villagers forward, with which you set yourself back so much as to not make it worth it. Besides, there is no way you can steal all your opponent's sheep. The first four sheep are just out of starting view, and you could steal the other 2x2 if you are fast and lucky, but then who is finding your own sheep at home?

More frequently if someone is looking to tryhard lame, they will wall in resources. You can see this fairly frequently in nomad games. I think Vivi did this to Viper recently.

You'll have to buy the new HD / 2013 version on Steam. Getting the newer expansions for it is optional. Though I'd advise you just wait till Nov. 14th and buy the Definitive Edition on Steam / Windows Store instead. If it's successful, it should bring the community together, plus it'll include all the expansions released so far + is an expansion itself as well. Makes for a much better deal than buying stuff individually now (it's only $20).

:) My two fav players. I'd like to pick some brains..... So, the first ever game I played on a PC was a demo of AOE 1 on my girlfriends lap top way back in the very early 2000's. I used to have AOE 2 on disk shortly after it came out but have long since lost it. I have been watching you for a while and decided I'd like to give the game a new go. I brought AOE 2 2013 on steam. EDIT: When launching it I noticed it is the HD version (?) Now I am thinking I brought the wrong version of the game. Should I buy the DLC Rise of rajas, African kingdoms and the forgotten, or am I wasting my money? Should I practice on what I have and wait till DE comes out in a few weeks time? Obviously I will be no where near the pros you show but if I wanted to play the "same game" what do I need. If I wanted to join a community game etc. Grateful for any advice.

Hey, don't worry that's the right version. You can still practice with it. Since AOE2:definitve will be out so soon, I would advice you to wait for that rather than buying the expansions now, as that will come out with all the expansions, with a discount for owners of the version you have. Cheers!

@@afz902k Thank you all for the replies.It's good to hear they will/ may offer a discount for DE when it comes out so I will hold fire with what I have for now. I will have a look at the link for installing voobly, I'm not sure if I'll install it yet, might wait for DE. I don't think I'll be doing much competitive play, need to get my head around the game. I'm working through the campaign at the mo, trying to get used to the quick keys etc. Then I'll need to get used to the different units for each nation. Also, need to work on the basic build orders, spamming all the types of units doesn't seem to be the best tact, my K/D ratio is awful lol. Thanks again for the advice.

@T90Official Just wanna know your opinion on this. I guess mbl used one of his starting villagers to lure the boar which Yo was trying to lame. The villager was trying to find her way back to TC despite heavy blocking. The fact is, you cannot block the starting villager while luring the boar, hope you knew it. Anyways, is this what has happened over here?

My opinion on laming: laming itself is fine--the problem is the map size. T90, Virtually all these little duels you cast are on tiny maps, right? I think they need to go up a map size or two. That would make laming a lot more difficult, and I think it would also heighten the uncertainty and the need for early game skill.

That way vills and units will take longer to reach enemy base and players will shift their playstyle to be less aggressive, which would also suck the fun out Arabia games. If you don't like laming there are maps like Arena where usually you have your boars inside your walls (although sometimes they spawn outside which sucks lol)

@@shafoz But I think Arabia is a big part of the problem. I think that right now Age of Empires 2 multiplayer is too rarefied, too narrow in focus. I've only watched the multiplayer scene, not played, except against the computer, but it seems like most of the games are occurring on the same map size and the same map type. Just consider that with such maps you almost always know that your base is going to be fairly close to the enemy base, whereas with a larger map your base might be close to the enemy base, or it might be far. With maps one or two sizes larger there would probably be less early aggression in general, but certainly there would still be opportunities. Increasing the map size would stretch players more to see how they adapt, what kind of strategies they come up with in response.

There should be some penalty for laming. Like you get extra food, but you lose something else. That way it'd be a tactical choice as well. Right now, it's just a thing that's a little boring, I don't think it has that much of effect on gameplay.

There already are penalties; three that I can think of on the top of my head. (1) Scout time: your scout could be doing other useful stuff, e.g. finding your/their resources, their TC, their build order/strategy, good tower spots... (2) Scout hp: your scout HAS TO take 2 hits from the boar, otherwise it won't follow properly. The next time your scouts meet, yours will lose. This can snowball, because the healthy scout can help in future fights, which keeps other units healthy, etc. (3) Lower level players always make mistakes during laming (e.g. idle TC or losing the scout)

1. There is a spectator delay. So the player would be seeing what happened a minute or so ago. 2. If someone is caught doing that, he's ostracized from the community.
