Honestly, as someone that's not an "AoE2 for life" kind of person, I feel like a lot of the flack this game has been getting is either completely undeserved, or from the perspective of casting, something that many games don't even bother implementing anything beyond the most basic of options for, if they even include THAT much, and thus AoE2 is always going to look better than it actually is in that regard simply because it actually supports casting in a real way. If you compare this with other remotely modern RTS games, from SupCom 2 to Starcraft 2 to Stronghold Crusader 2, to AoE3, to C&C Generals, 4, etc., to DoW3, to Strategy games as a whole like the total war series, to strategy-like games like Rimworld.... AoE4 stands up really well. Of every RTS game I can think of that's released in the past 10-15 years, Starcraft 2 might be the only one that's objectively superior, and considering SC's basically considered THE big-name RTS, is that at all surprising? AoE4 feels like "what would happen if AoE2 had been made in the modern era, with modern features and mechanics, instead of 20-something years ago" The civs feel interesting, the game looks pretty good for a true RTS, the maps feel fairly well designed, the mechanics feel like there's actually some real depth to them... The "issues" come from people expecting this to be "AoE2 but in 4k 3D graphics" - It's obvious at first look that it's not trying to be that. I'm sure that within a year, if the game receives dedicated "support" from the COMMUNITY, with people ACTUALLY playing it, that we'll see things like the spectator mode improved, a 3rd-party casting program, etc. etc. - And that people will learn the actual differences between units, civs, the actually optimal ways to play the game, how important different aspects are, etc. If you throw an AoE2 pro into Stronghold, Supcom1/2 or even Starcraft, they're probably going to do "above average" at best, simply because the games play absurdly differently. This is no different - It'll take time to adjust. So far, I think AoE4 reminds me of a fun mix between AoE3 and AoM, but with the setting of AoE2. I think it'll be a great game, overall, but that it's going to just be... different from AoE2. And people really need to accept that.
@ChrisStoneinator3 жыл бұрын
Funny you should say that because my big issue with it is that it tried too hard to be *like* AoE2, a game that already exists. Also you can't expect the community to adopt and relearn an inferior game just so that it gets support and improvements. It's on the team that made the game to see the potential if the community doesn't. Otherwise what was the point of the project?
@sebastian1143 жыл бұрын

Imho some crucial things are missing from this game that have also been pointed out in beta testing and they just didn't care to add them. For example why can't I look at the map after the match? I want to see the map, I want to see what I could have done better, I want to analyze the game afterwards but you simply can't. Also adding mouse hotkeys. I mean, I was very vocal about it in beta and they just simply didn't care enough to add it. My 2 most used hotkeys in AoE 2 are the 2 buttons on my mouse. In AoE4 you can't add hotkeys on mouse. Not to mention the UI and the zoom (which were 2 of the most discussed issues in beta) also were not addressed. I feel like they haven't changed anything from beta and it is a massive red flag for me.

@@yc5117 hmm good to hear there is still a grid (as opposed to some other rts that went to the full free-form 3d). Yet the honest effect I notice in most rts games that I've played is that in doing this the game has less tactical things like quick blocking ("quick wall"). Sure you can argue that this is illogical, and that is true. But to me rts is an evolution of games like chess with more variation (easier to break parity) and working in real time (sadly, but turn based games are either very basic/unbalanced or non existant by now).

I don’t understand why the units in AoE4 move so slowly compared to AoE2. It looks like there is much less opportunity for micro with this type of gameplay, which makes the game less interesting to watch. I’d play the game if they fixed this though.

Which units? Foot units basically keep up with mounted ones.

@@LOLHICRONO it’s more about the animations of the units than their movement speed across the map. But that’s a bit weird that a foot unit could keep up with a cavalry unit lol.

Why does no one talk about how this game is BEAUTIFUL
@merlball85203 жыл бұрын
Some graphics are cartoony. Some of it is quite nice. The graphics aren't talked about because the overall impression isn't overwhelmingly positive or negative. It's just alright so far.

@@merlball8520 I'm not just talking about the graphics, but the atmosphere, details, sounds like stampeding knights, the cannon effects, mechanics, weather, biomes. All these details is such a jump from aoe2 Also the music which changes per civ even in the menus, or the stage of a battle or time in-game, the cinematics too god damn

It's not that pleasant to watch while playing. It's alright. Like few dont like few. Life goes on.

There's no such thing as Franks in AOE4 .... I guess you meant French / France?
