The god of war results are... Strange. You should be getting higher fps with FSR enabled. You are getting about the same performance at 1080p than a steam deck at 800p. I mean I can push settings up to original in God of War on some settings and get about 40 fps with some dips in combat but surprisingly stable. Based on the tflops calculations, you should have 3 to 4x the performance which should net an increase in resolution and a bump in settings or framerate. Probably a driver issue or related to the issues you were having

@PixelShade Жыл бұрын
I mostly play the Steam Deck between 1-10W, with the most demanding games like Cyberpunk locked at 9W for a total playtime of 3 hours. I'm making a high-res 2D adventure game myself and try to target around 1.5W at 720p60fps (5-6hours) or 4K60fps at 10W. This is really my biggest concern for the 7840U... it feels like it's an APU adapted for laptops and not handhelds, and handheld manufacturers need to compensate with a pretty big and hefty battery to cope with the extra power draw.
@2010ngojo Жыл бұрын
Seems like only big companies can convince the chip designers to make more efficient processors. The steam deck is efficient because Valve wants it to. Unless more handhelds become mainstream, amd or even intel won't make an efficient processor for these devices. Laptops aren't as limited, so not many people care.

Something I've noticed is a lot of the time the CPU is running at it's base clock of 3.3ghz or higher in games that are being GPU limited. This likely means that the CPU is taking power away from the GPU hurting performance (or battery life). I hope to see some third party tools used like motionassistant or others that help limit the CPU clocks to allow more power to the GPU. I also wonder if this is an area of improvement for the ROG Ally and why it's a semi-custom chip.

@INXSibleStones-ItaliaFTW74 Жыл бұрын
I second that because it'd be good to see them side-by-side to see the generational uplift. With that said, taking into account 6800U benchmarks that both I've done in my spare time and others have done online, I feel like the performance jump is quite minimal, in line with the Phawx's cautious predictions about the ROG Ally. For example, I did a 3DMark Time Spy benchmark on my 6800U AOKZOE A1 and got a score of 2106 at 15 W (roughly in line with other benchmarks), which, compared to the 2308 Taki got with the A1 Pro at the same TDP, equates to a performance gain of less than 10%. Granted, the pre-release 6800U device benchmarks were typically lower (usually in the mid-to-high 1800s), with there being a small boost in performance likely from subsequent driver updates. Even with that in mind, the largest performance gain with driver updates compared to the 6800U you can expect to see is 20%, if that, and there's no guarantee that driver updates will even get us that. I feel like these 7840U devices (along with the ROG Ally) will be a great purchase for anyone in the market for a PC handheld that either hasn't upgraded in a long while or has never owned one period, but if you already own a 6800U handheld, there's very little reason to upgrade other than just wanting the latest and greatest. If you own a Steam Deck, there'd be more of a reason to upgrade due to the very restrained 15 W power budget for its APU, but if you own a 6800U device, there isn't much to see here.

:) I am not a gamer, BUT bought a steamdeck after seeing my daughters' and use it as a UMPC with Linux :) What OS is running under this? THANKS MUCH for sharing, and ALL the BEST! Cheers! :)

This is running Windows. It can technically run Steam OS, but it wouldn't be as seamless as a Deck.

Out of curiosity how does this compared to the 6800u?
@TheSixthSLoT Жыл бұрын
And this is why I didn't get the Win 4 right away. The design is amazing, but I knew this was right around the corner, and likely Q3 of this year, GPD is going to refresh their 6800U models with 7840U models.
@jeffreyali1456 Жыл бұрын
Isn’t it a little too big though. Win 4’s design looks a lot more compact and yet powerful

Not comparable as part of Win 4 selling point is the keyboard.
@FrowningTaco Жыл бұрын
I don't think you guys get it he's not sayin that he would choose this handheld over the GPD Win 4. He's sayin he knew he was right in waiting for a refreshed version of the GPD Win 4.
@jeffreyali1456 Жыл бұрын
@@FrowningTaco but that could take a long time. And the 6800 is already powerful enough
@FrowningTaco Жыл бұрын
@@jeffreyali1456 Well in OP's comment and in Takis video it is known that the 7840U is a drop in upgrade for anything that uses a 6800U. So if it takes long to come out(refreshed GPD Win4) it's cause GPD doesn't want to make those who bought the 6800U version feel bad.

Good to know that the fan can handle the load, but how noticeable is the fan noise? The main draw for the Ally is everyone saying how quietly it runs. Any comment on sound levels of the fan at different loads?
@TakiUdon Жыл бұрын
The 30% fan speed that I talk about in the thermal section is probably good enough to cool up to 13W and you can't hear it when the volume of the device is at 15. You need around 75% fan speed to cool 28W TDP (it would keep the CPU temps at ~65-70C). At that level, you need 100% volume to cover the fan noise. I tend to stay between 15W and 20W. Fan noise isn't bad in that range.
@Tekgnome. Жыл бұрын
The main draw for me is the screen on the Ally. Its both brighter and supports VRR between 40-120hz making low fps gaming feel smoother than it actually is.

@@Tekgnome. True, but 8" would be nice (twss).

@@danh2716 Thats true. Either way I'm excited! With the push for handheld systems the upcoming systems are amazing and probably just the tip of the iceberg for systems in the next few years.

I really think 1080p doesn't make sense for this chipset, i guess its a nice option to have for somethings like emulation, but you sacrifice so much.

How well did they implement gyro controls? I feel like the steamdeck is the only one that does it well. I had a onexplayer with gyro but steam would recognize it as a Xbox controller which had no gyro option. So had to use a 3rd party program handheld companion to get it to work

As I said before and will always say it. I think handhelds should be with the best looking panel possible, but at 720p. There should be no reason to lower the resolution to achieve 60fps or just a stable fps. Handheld PCs are getting better and better, but not to where 1080p is it's default.

The Ally has the Z1 Extreme, do you think this handheld will have similar performance as the Ally?
@Tekgnome. Жыл бұрын
We still don't have specifics on the Ally but in theory, it should be even faster. This machine is limited to 28W, the Ally will do 30w. What we don't know is if the Ally will have LPDDR5-6400 or LPDDR5x-7500. It should be noted that the Ally has a much better screen that supports a much brighter display, and VRR between 40-120hz. This makes games feel like they are smoother than they actually are even at lower frames between 40fps-60fps Also, the Ally only has 16gb of ram. While its not likely to have performance issues with 1080p and 16gb, The AOK has 32gb minimum.

I'm getting the impression that; for the specs this thing is boasting, combined with rendering at a lower internal resolution AND low settings, many of those games tested ought to be much closer to 60fps. Seems like the API is leaving a lot of performance on the table. When Nintendo Switch came out, from launch right throughout its entire life cycle, there was ALWAYS the sense that the thing is punching FAR above its weight. These PC handhelds, while very powerful, aren't giving me that impression(Steam Deck, to a lesser degree). It's for that reason that, I'm eager to see what Nintendo & Nvidia will come up with now that they have a successful model to build upon(including a already highly optimized API), a TON more R&D money, a LOT of time to delve into GPU customizations, and performance watermarks being set by the current generation of PC handhelds. It's going to be virtually impossible for it to disappoint, performance wise, even if it's not the most powerful handheld on the block. We've come that far!

I'm not sure if this is what I am seeing, so please correct me if I am wrong, but it appears that when games are being played at 16:9 resolutions on that 16:10 screen, it generates artifacts of some kind. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with pixels like mismatching somehow. The picture seems more aliased, especially in motion.
