My wife and did this hike in 2018 in December so NZ summer. We didn't do any research on the difficulty and just went for it. HAHA whoops. We started early and at lunch at the look out point prior to the switch back area with the marked polls. Just kept climbing when we finally reached the corner and saw the hut in the distance. We hung out got warm at some ramen for about an hour and then turned around for our decent. The views I must saw on our decent were just phenomenal. I've hiked all over Colorado and Hawaii and have to say this is easily my most favorite hike ever. Start to finish it took us about 8.5 hours round trip not including lunch and eating. The last little bit OMG going down the stairs was a bruiser. The toes and legs were def cramping. We didn't bring any hiking poles or much supplies besides about 4qt of water per person and some food. The one girl who we met basically told us we were nuts. lol If I were to visit and do it again I would book a night at the summit at the hut. Would be epic.

Good stuff guys! I did this track Boxing Day 2016 (?). I absolutely loved it. I didn't go up to Mt. Olivier though as I was doing an in and out for the day. It looked like you were mountaineers up there! I think a bit too exposed up there for me and I'm always mindful of avalanches. I've seen a number of them in the Mount Cook NP. Thanks for the video. That climb looks very dangerous, specially the last part. I was planning to do it next January but now I'm considering it.
