Excuse my ignorance in case this video exists, but maybe a more tactical comparison? Such as what armies are more mele v range, lower points for larger quantity armies VS higher points for smaller quantity and their power comparison, movement speeds, abilities or advantages to each army, stuff like that?

Number one advice is: Choose what you think looks and feels best. Number two: Look at some tier list and maybe dont choose a tier 5 army, unless they are up for a rework/update. Its just not that fun to get stomped so often. But Aos balance is decent so with most armies you will be fine.

I agree with your points. If someone picks an army not doing well, on one hand I don’t want to talk them out of it but on the other hand i want them to enjoy the game and losing a lot without knowing why sucks

Definitely go with what you love the look of. When starting into this hobby, I was talked out of Fyreslayers. I LOVE dwarves, their lore, their look. But I let some people at the store influence my purchases. I ended up with Stormcast (who I’ve grown to really like), but at the time playing a few games with unpainted plastic, I was discouraged. So they sat for almost two years before covid got me back into the hobby. I enjoy the SCE I have now. But looking back I wish I would’ve stuck with my “heart” and gotten what I originally gravitated towards.

Great video. I always suggest a beginner's full game box. It has the rules laid out and simplified, has a couple of factions to demonstrate different skills, and gives you an idea of what you like before spending too much. I have one for AoS and for 40k as well. I don't play 3/4 of the factions I got, but used them as teaching tools. My kids learned AoS this way and decided to go KO and Seraphon. I prefer Chaos. But, since we have the Nighthaunt and SE models, we can still use them. The SE bolster their armies (especially magic for my son's KO army) and the Nighthaunt made their way into our Halloween decoration displays. They also make fun models for use with D&D and Pathfinder.

I'd consider flexibility in play style. The vast majority of the Age of Sigmar armies only offers a 1-dimensional play style because the range is pathetic. This forces you to head into starting a second army from scratch (upfront expense and all). I would consider Stormcast, Seraphon, Free Cities and a couple of others armies as having a deep enough pool of units that you can change your play style and you can do so by slowly adding additional units (instead of purchasing an entire new 2,000 pt. army). Not saying you'll have multiple super competitive options, but just having the option will alleviate the boredom that sometimes happens with 1-dimensional armies. You can do the same by playing a 2nd or 3rd army, and this is something I also do (and I'm sure many people run multiple armies) but as a 1st army - having the ability to expand slowly is a nice option.

Rule of cool 100% I love my daughters of khaine which is typically described as expensive and difficult. I love the shrines and morathi so I dove in to find the water is great (and very bloody)! I have also started cities because I like the dragon, hydras, and arcanum wagons. Any army can win in this game as well because the battle plan and dice decide a lot of how the game will play. I love seeing how excited new players get over their armies as well. Don't worry about playing the same army as someone else either because your own unique paint style, lists, and play style will still make your army unique. These are all great suggestions regarding paint and price, but passion is so important. Hope you have fun with whatever you choose!

More or less ran out of new models to buy in Infinity (got four armies), got two armies in Malifaux, got a full Team Yankee army, two and a half army in WarmaHordes, about 2K of Necrons. Needed to snort some plastic and assemble some glue, so got the Warcry Catacombs box, then I read that AoS had changed from the 1E catastrophe that I knew about. Looked up the rules and whatnot, saw the Daughters of Khaine. Sexy dark elf ladies? Check. Aggressive melee glass cannon force? Check. Got the Shadow & Pain box, along with starter for DoK and their battletome. Figured out a list, sort of. Six Witch Elf (I'm old, bite me) boxes, Morathi, and probably 2-3 more start collecting boxes to get the Hag Queens. Will order those end of this month. Currently busy assembling the Shadow & Pain box. Regardless of any army or character or whatever, I always go with what looks cool first, and then I look at playstyle. If those two add up, that's what I'm going for. That being said, I've always thought Skaven to be cool, but I'm not overly gung ho over the idea of building an army since they're a horde army. I have no qualms over dropping hundreds of EUR at once to get something I like, but I wouldn't recommend it for someone who is entirely new to the hobby. Buy a starter kit, and work from that piece by piece.

I agree with the Night haunts being easy to paint ( as far as the common battle lines and some hero's). I recently did both a new and old metal black coach and had a blast doing them and Lady Olynder. There is also a great little kit Gdubs sells with 3 glaive wraiths, a paint brush, and all the paints you need to do the basic night haunt paint scheme. Its the first time I actually followed the paint instructions and the ended up looking fairly decent. Mostly try to avoid anything with too much white if your a novice ( yellow and pinkish flesh colors can also be problematic as well) as the pigments just never seem to work like other paints I feel. The easiest models Gdubs puts out to paint are the fell water Trogs I feel. Use plague bearer flesh contrast paint for the skin over a zenithal prime job and you get a great looking model every time.

Nice. As much as I like seeing fielded death armies (super cool looking), I would not recommend armies that are fragile with a bunch of spikey bits. Sucks to pay good money for a model only to have it break during assembly or painting. Newer people getting into the hobby might have a harder time with such models. Also look for deals locally not just online. I picked up an old battleforce from like 2 Christmas ago for $133 on sale. often you'll find those hard to find items or limited prints in store for a lot less than what they go for on sites like Ebay. But most important pick what looks cool. And if you still have a hard time deciding, delve into the lore first. I'm sure you'll connect with something after that.

I'm not convinced of Stormcast as starting army. A big part of their range (and particularly some of their most good looking models) is very subpar, and they're quite hard to play, with some combos not being very obvious. That said, they have a very satisfying depth and you can always find a colour scheme to your liking. Nighthaunt can be very boring to paint by glazing/layering, but they're so much easier with drybrushing and air brushing. Airbrush is not very newbie friendly, but it is trully transformative as an experience for an army like Nighthaunt.
@AoSCoach3 жыл бұрын
I can see your points on Stormcast & Nighthaunt. A newer player is unlikely to be getting under the hood with combos and synergies and at its barest bones, they are simple and easy to paint and play. Once you start getting into combos.. totally with you.

@@AoSCoach Indeed. I suppose it depends with whom you play and with what you start. If you start like me with War of Souls and you play between friends with these two armies those two armies are good to start (and Sequitors are the best battleline for Sigmar). If you play against stronger armies though, you might be dismayed: "how do I beat kharadron?" for example. Now thankfully those people playing the stronger armies might be sufficiently familiar with Stormcast to give you tips: (ex: adding a Vexillor can make units coming from Azyr much more reliable and scary).

It’s easier for me to die right away.In any way, supporting Age of Sigamar is really good and Heroin Deed.The problem is that Indomitus severely breach my hobby budget this year and for Age of Sigmar I won't be able to buy Soul Wars, so I had to limit myself to Tempest of Souls. I am always concerned when people recommend cities of sigmar to starting players as im still not convinced they are not the florida faction with every BR letting old WHFB player ally in a new AoS faction so they naturally transition into a faction that will get new sculpts when cities slide into legends. the witchhunters are the first new sculpts for the cities faction since end times and we havent seen if they are a cursed city expansion or not. Aethercast had the idea that cities might get split up and woodelves go to the kernoth destruction faction and/or sylvaneth, empire sculpts join the ayesir cult church of sigmar and dwarves join the fyreslayers and possibly KO. Looking at you LoN. Also what kind of guide is this? not a word about my system of purchasing an army and while painting it up getting a cool idea and buying another one and painting a few models of each army until abandoning one of the projects for the next new idea. Ill have you know this have led to me having multiple armies in each grand alliance before getting anything to the table and its a great system.

I wouldn’t normally recommend starting Cities to a new player for a number of reasons. You can’t deny it’s large roster to choose from so when it came to longevity they had to be in there. As for Cities future, I guess it depends which direction GW want to take them. Is Cities just a home for their old fantasy battle range and new cities will open up in the future... or will they expand the range back out to something like the older factions. It’a hard to say. We have some new sculpts from Cursed City but nothing from Underworlds

I wouldn't necessarily say Maggotkin are simple to learn due to how fractured their rules are, between the Battletome, Wrath of the Everchosen for subfactions, and the warscroll updates from BR Teclis (which are freely available elsewhere but a new player isn't going to know that). And that's not to mention including Skaven Pestilens and Slaves to Darkness. A new player needs to be able to access all of their rules in one place.
@AoSCoach3 жыл бұрын
At the core of Nurgle the rules are simpler than other armies, however; right now their rules are spread across a bunch of books. That was true of Daughters of Khaine too and it was quickly wrapped back together with a new tome... surely an updated book can't be far away.

I totally agree with a lot being play what you like the look of, but something does have to be said about viability. A new player shouldn't concern themselves with the global meta, of course, but nobody wants to pick an army they like and find out they are super weak and will get crushed even in casual games. If you play in a more competitive meta it's definitely something to give thought to but even in a casual one the power level of an army is an important, albeit tertiary, thing to consider.

Honest newb question: do any of these armies have units that are scarce? Are all these armies reliably managed by GW so everyone has equal access? After trying to get Cursed City and hearing more about GW, I’m worried about getting invested and finding there’s something down the road I need that’s out of print or whatever. Thanks.
@AoSCoach3 жыл бұрын
Honest Answer: the normal Age of Sigmar line which is what you see in your battletomes and generals handbook aren’t scarce. With COVID there has certainly been stock issues which see some products delayed but it’s usually resolved quickly. There are special limited edition models which come out for things like store anniversaries... which are limited. They offer at times box sets which feature 2 armies in them which are designed to be a limited run. Cursed City is an interesting challenge IJ its self and I think there is more to the story such as the GW warehouses being prepared for a rumoured AoS 3 launch in June-July with a new starter box plus that their cardboard and paper products like books and gaming tiles in Cursed City are produced in China while the minis are made in England and the USA. So to replace the sold out Cursed City will take a lot longer than replacing inventory

Not sure I agree nighthaunt are a good starter choice for having simple rules. Yes the rules are simple, but a new player who doesn't know how to play objectives and position tactically is just going to get their shit pushed in and get tabled every game. I know, for that is me.
@AoSCoach3 жыл бұрын
The reason Nighthaunt are in there is because they’re forgiving. They ignore rend, they can come back from the dead, and you have enough troops so mistakes aren’t as punishing. They can also be complex to your valid point
@Eversca3 жыл бұрын
@@AoSCoach oh wow quick reply. I agree they're forgiving in that sense, but I think they're pretty unforgiving in many other ways. It's not so much that they can be complex, it's that you have to play them in a complex way to be effective at all. I'm just a newb though, so this could just be my bias, but when I play against other newb friends who are fielding ironjawz or beastclaw for instance, if I make the smallest of errors when positioning I'll get charged and wiped out. I guess you can build a more resilient army, but I don't think many new players are gonna be running 80 chainrasps off the bat.
@AoSCoach3 жыл бұрын
You make valid points which I won’t disagree with. If a new Nighthaunt player faced an experience player at a local store, they probably know enough to disarm them quickly, but that’s probably true with almost any army.

I'm sorry for my negativity, but I strongly disagree with your statement that Start Collecting! Stormcast Eternals Thunderstrike Brotherhood is a good purchase for new players. I would rather say that that this is one of if not the worst proposition for new people. What we have in the box: 10 Liberators from the first starter box. Hammers and shields, no special weapons. Liberators are already a terrible unit, if not the worst battleline in the game, and those are even worst still. 3 Prosecutors with hammers. Terrible unit. Can't fight. They will die if someone will look at them. 3 models unit, 6W. 3 Retributors. When a minimal unit contains 5. No options as well. Retributors are slow, week unit. Who has seen them on the table last time? Vandus Hammerhand. You can buy him separately if you really want him. Lord-Relictor - The only source of this model, unfortunately. He is one of maybe 2 units from the first line that are worth something now. Let's assume that someone will buy this box, and maybe some more. He like them, he thinks that they look strong, tough and powerful. He paints them and wont to play, and he is swiped from the table because of Mortal Wounds, buckets of attack, activations out of order, magic. What impression will he have when his super, magical, immortal warriors that were created as a vanguard to reclaim the Realms and face everything that those Remas can throw at them will be taken out easily by some rabble with the sticks? Again, I'm sorry for my negativity, but GW does not give me many reasons for positivity lately, you see. I will try to be positive at the first opportunity.
@AoSCoach3 жыл бұрын
I’m not saying the Thunderstrike Brotherhood is a good box to buy but rather the faction is a good one to start with based on the reasons I suggested like cost and ease to paint. The intro sets like Soulwars and whatever AoS 3 brings out will likely be superior to the AoS 1 sculpts like Libs.
@LorrusGrymn3 жыл бұрын
@@AoSCoach If you look at things in such a way, then yes, I can agree with you that hobby-wise, this army is good for beginners. Models are big, and this makes them easy to paint. There are not complicated too much as well. Buy to start the game with this army may be disappointing. There are not who they suppose to be. They have a large range of models, but few of them are any good right now. The book is old, and poorly aged; even at the release, it had no internal balance. Due to the GW decision and the path that AoS went, the survivability is limited, and few units in the game we can call resilient. Stir cast Eternals do not have much offensive power, speed and numbers. And for me, AoS is a game of glass hammers now.
