In the early mid 70s being a Navy brat, I lived in Japan on base. We had many toys. One of the ones that were very cool and from what I can remember good quality, were Micronuats. They were an all metal toy robots, shot red missiles as high velocity. Its a miracle my brother and I had any eyes left that worked correctly after our childhood. After we moved back to the States, they accidentally got all thrown away. We must have 20-30 of them.

Thanks for the information. It just keeps getting better. In Canada Aoshima kits are more expensive than Tamiya even though they have the same importer. The types of kits available are not as great volume is significantly less. Some of their 1/700 waterline ships do have fit issues, and some details are not as good as the Tamiya ships.

Thanks very much for this! I've always enjoyed their kits - being stationed in Japan for some years before my retirement from the military, I was able to get my hands on quite a few Aoshima kits. True, not as shake'n'bake as Tamiya but nowhere near that price point either. Still have 20+ Aoshima kits in the stash. :-)

Man, am I enjoying your output right now:) Thanks! Interesting to see that Aoshima must of had a fairly large licencing deal with Gerry Anderson, and not just Thunderbirds, the "Supercar" at 1:20 was from one of G.A's first half hour kids shows, fairly sure I spotted a Captain Scarlet kit in there too.

They got the TB and Scarlet molds and licenses from IMAI when they went under. TB was a big seller for IMAI and were easily found even in Canada. IMAI Captain Scarlet not as much. Apparently, some information says, that IMAI's failure had a lot to do with Captain Scarlet not being as successful. I still have a couple of IMAI TB2 kits in my stash.

Cyber Formula (that Asurada AKF-0 kit) has some amazingly beautiful fantasy race cars, and there's a progression in technology (to correspond to the consecutive seasons of the racing formulae / team merging / new designs) as the series rolls on.

As a young kid I used to watch Supercar, a British marionette show produced by Gerry Anderson (Fireball XL-5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, UFO, Space:1999). The model shown at 1:21 is a copy of the prop used in the show. I wonder if they ever made models of Stingray, the supersonic submarine, or Fireball XL-5, the rocket ship.

April 4, 2020---Started building models back in '74 when I came back to the states from Panama. Yeah (GASP), it was a time before cell phones, the internet, etc. existed. And people lining up for gas and screaming what a rip off that gas was being sold for 50 cents a gallon. Remember seeing my first electronic calculator and it was NOT small and ran something like $150, maybe more. But Aoshima was producing a lot of 1/72nd scale WW 2 Japanese aircraft kits, along with Hasegawa and Tamiya no one else was producing. THE hardest part about them was trying to find ANY info on them. At the time, think only Famous Aircraft of The World paperbacks were the only ones available and not that widely available. And yeah, got about 30+f them still in my reference stash.

Ya, miss the dimmer switch on the floor, cheap and easy to replace when they died. I did duck and cover drills in elementary school, also life before Air Raid Sirens (now mostly used for weather,) and way before home computers and cellphones. You could get a mobile phone in your car but the electronics hogged up most of the trunk.

Aoshima is usually considered to be the more nationalistic model company among other Japanese ones with their battle ships, tuner and wild custom "Bosozoku" cars. They've even caused some controversy a couple years ago for releasing 1/32 scale models of Japanese right wing propaganda trucks which did upset quite a lot of people and some shops down right refuse to even sell those kits, but you can still find those on their website.

Asurada cars are "Cyber Formula" cars from anime series Future GPX Cyber Formula (1991) Nippako-chan - (that blue haired girl) is a mascot of God Hand company (they make ultra fine nippers) and she is an anthropomorphic nipper (just look at her hair and bow) Roadranger and Mazurka MBT - Is from Techno Police 21C (1982 movie) That "parrot-fish" is a Fling Boat Falco from Future Boy Conan (1978 series) That "green space turd" is Gido-mack from Space Runaway Ideon (1980) a tv series made by Tomino and is quite brutal (kids loosing heads etc.) as Tomino started to be know as "Kill em all Tomino". It could be separated, use those 4 claws and shoot missles from central part (in anime, not sure about model kit) Jump man and Genki Machines were small "pull back" toy cars that you had to build from like 5 parts. Nissan Safari 4WD was from Police Drama - Seibu Keisatsu (1979). They also made model kits from MOSPEADA (one of the series that was "converted" into Robotech)

As usual, very good. Have you ever considered balsa kit companies history like Guillow, Cleveland Model and Supply co, Comet Model Hobbycraft a some others? As you know, Guillows is still in business and in the same location ever since it was founded by Paul K. Guillow in 1926. Cleveland Model is also in business but only sells plans and Comet was absorbed by Guillows. Nice histories of aeromodelling.

Been wanting to get into the hobby for years. Well today I saw a little roadside yard sale and I picked up a brand new Aoshima Mercedes SL65G Black series model for 5 bucks. Built a few of their 1/12 scale bikes. Not as finely detailed or well engineered as the Tamiya series, but look spot on when complete. Cheaper too. Pretty sure they have an agreement or some arrangement with Kawasaki.

Same here. I built about six Aoshima 1/12 motorcycles and five 1/24 vehicles. The engineering of Aoshima kits are not as good as Tamiya, and there are definitely fitment issues. Sometimes the location pins don't align properly and the detailing can be muddled. However, with careful building and painting, it's hard to tell the difference between the final product of Aoshima and Tamiya kits.

Question, maybe worthy of a video. How did the model manufacturers decide on the scales like 1/32, 1/47, 1/72, 1/350, 1/450, 1/700??? That has always puzzled me.
