While I have over 1100 hours on Age of Wonders 3 (my favorite game), some aspects of Planetfall take a bit to get use to. Thank you, Frost, for the excellent Planetfall suggestions to help avoid critical mistakes that can ruin your game. Please continue making Planetfall videos! Once you complete your tutorial series of videos, would you consider a "Let's Play" series of each faction? I think that would help bring out the gameplay choices and details you've presented in the tutorials, not to mention it would be just plain fun.
@FrostEesOP5 жыл бұрын
Hello David, Thank you for the compliments and I am delighted that my videos are also relevant to an AOW 3 vet :-) You must be reading my mind as my plan is to start doing strategy and manual combat videos for each faction once I am back from my business trip next week. As turn based strategy games can be rather lengthy, I just have to figure out how to best condense the material for it to be easy viewing whilst still making sense.
@davidreeves4985 жыл бұрын
@@FrostEesOP Just a thought about video condensation: Maybe just edit out the common actions/combat setup and verbally describe what you did as a summary. Then the video could be just fun and interesting bits. I'm looking forward to your new strategy and combat videos.

Just a quick note for people playing the campaigns, the relationships in the campaigns are scripted. Don't waste your influence points on compliments or insults, because the story controls all of that and an A.I. player can go from positive 800 to declaring war on you in a couple of turns. If you're playing a campaign, just enjoy the story and save your influence points for other things. Cheers.

@kevinurlaub38104 жыл бұрын
@@FrostEesOP It seems like it, yes. I watched everything but the in-depth race stuff by now, the rest I will watch later. What I seem to have a problem with in my first game (I did the tutorial but didn't start a campaign yet) on pretty much everything easy just to snoop is, that it seems like I got bad luck with the resources in my area. There's barely food, on every notable sector seems to be an Npc faction (especially those that have either 2 of the same resources or that and a landmark). I started out with celestial amazons because their units seem fine and I'm okay with that actually (Battles are pretty difficult at times for me, for whatever reason they get to strike (not move) first all the time). However my economy sucks because my first colony can't exactly specialize and the others are hindered by said distribution. Maybe I should start a new game and see if I get more lucky?
@FrostEesOP4 жыл бұрын
@@kevinurlaub3810 Mmmm, that is unusual not to have any food sectors next to your first colony. As you are getting used to the game, It may be worth saving, starting a new game and seeing if the layout suits you better. In tactical combat, the player who gets attacked always gets the first move/attack. Also, Celestian is the most passive of secret techs so you may want to try something like Promethean or Xenoplague. Finally, if you have questions about the game, I suggest you post them in the Planetfall channel on my Discord: discord.gg/s9zXsBP

@@FrostEesOP Ahh, just saw this as I finished the other lengthy reply, heh. I may pop in sometime ^^ Thanks for replying. Thought celestial would be a good start for exploring all the options because of the diplomacy bonuses, but you're right. Also it seems some things need to be triggered by getting attacked, which doesn't seem to be favourable to get buffs or debuffs on enemies. Ahem. I'll get it eventually.

Love your videos and think they are really helpful but another reason why the forward base is useful is because if you get attacked and your defending on the base, it makes life harder for the attacker and another useful tip for beginners - if your not sure about the manual combat because it can be a bit daunting at first, just auto the fight and then watch the replay video after so you can see what your units are like in battle before trying your hand at it yourself 🙂
@FrostEesOP3 жыл бұрын
Hello Robert, Thanks for adding to the tips and yes, the replay is a great tip for getting to know how to get started in combat with a particular faction & tech Forward bases can be a mixed blessing as you can also be using the influence they require so that you are not attacked in the first place. They really come into play once you have Transit infrastructure research by providing really fast movement around your territory.

Do you find it a setback to spreading quickly now that colonizers cost increasingly more cosmite? Do you have to specialise colonies in dual roles now?
@FrostEesOP4 жыл бұрын
Hello Doomi,I still aim to have 4 colonies as early as possible (each specialising in a resource) but I now place greater emphasis on acquiring sectors that have cosmite sites and obtaining the society cosmite skills.Once I have the 4 colonies, I now favour going to war with the weakest opponent as the best way to expand the number of colonies beyond the first four as this places less drain on energy and cosmite.
@christopherwebber38042 жыл бұрын
very good. However building bases costs (a lot of) influence points, so if you do that all the time, you won't have anything left for diplomacy. I would like to know how you get new heroes and if there is a limit to the number of levels a hero can have. You didn't mention that some sectors are better than others because they have some extra building in them or they provide certain resources, so choosing which sectors to annex and what type of exploitation is not quite so simple

@8055N1663R5 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the effort for this guide :) There are a few things I'd like to correct or add to but first of all I got to congratulate you on the great name for your leader. Kinda makes me want to see the other commanders you've created. Also I'm so gonna steal "Mandy Bils" for my next Kirko mission! :D Tip#1 is great and explained very well but at 1:24 you say you've claimed a sector which you haven't. You are probably very aware of this but for the others watching the video it might not be: flying to an unclaimed sector doesn't do anything in itself. For that you need forward bases (tip#9) or colonies. For Tip#5 you talk about researching Operation Effectiveness once you've "finished a vertical tree". That's not a thing though. You don't need to research everything in a column to start something in the next. The only requirement to research something is that you've researched whatever the little grey line left of it is linked to. If it's linked to multiple things either will do. So once you've researched "Operation Effectiveness I" you could go straight for "Operation Effectiveness II". That might not be the best play though since it'll require more research than something further to the left in another row and it might be better to go for something else first. Tip#9, Tip#10 and the Bonus Tip are basically all about how to spend Influence and I feel it's a bit incomplete and also that it depends a lot on playstyle and the specific situation. I'd never pay influence to compliment someone else for example because the opportunity cost is so huge. I could be spending it instead to buy units and mods from the NPC factions which also makes them like me more which gets me to peace with them faster which in turn gives me more influence per turn and better units and mods to buy and so on and so forth. Also while focusing on a single NPC faction might be a good idea in some, probaly even in most cases, working for multiple factions can also have its advantages. By working for multiple NPC factions you get more rewards and more experience because you get more of their quests to fulfill. And I do believe that you gain 10 favor for fulfilling a quest for the faction you helped and only -5 for the faction that doesn't want you to work with whoever you worked for, so it would only be slower but not impossible to reach peace with a faction (or multiple in this case). Either way great vid and good tips for beginners. I'll make sure to check out your other videos :)
@FrostEesOP5 жыл бұрын
Hello project, Glad you liked the commander name :-) and thank you for the feedback. With regard to tip #1, you are mixing up claiming and owning. If you put a forward base or colony on a sector, you own it. If you fly to the "flag" marker in a sector before any opponent, you claim it and if any opponent then builds on that sector, you will receive cassus belli for building on your claimed sector. For tip #5, yes, perhaps I should have said columns rather than vertical tree and emphasise that not all skills need to be trained. Yes, researching something to the right will require more research units than something to the left but my point is that with something like operation effectiveness, it is worth making this a priority in your society research, Tip#10 and bonus tip. Here will have to agree to disagree. I consider spending influence on complimenting opponents in order to avoid wars in early game to be much better value than obtaining a few tier ! units/mods from NPCs. With regard to working with NPC factions, I stated that you should focus on one NPC faction and only fulfill the quests of the other factions that will not create conflict with your preferred faction. For a beginner, I consider this to be far more preferrable than juggling doing all quests for opposing NPC factions and run the risk of being unable to fulfill a quest (too far away, not enough cosmite/energy etc) when your NPC standings are on the verge of bringing them to war.

I just found this. It is a GREAT guide! I am very new to the game, but I tried to use your tip about "claiming a sector." I know that late game I get into Causi Beli issues when trying to annex territory claimed by me and another faction so I went around with a scout in my current game. I went to the flags, but it still says unclaimed wilderness after I visit the flag. Am I missing a step? Does it only work on territory next to owned/ annexed territory? Also, I am not understanding the faction standing. For regular Commanders it has a left arrow and a right arrow plus a number. For the NPCs it has just one number and an arrow. My brain is trying to see it as my faction relation rating is X (between -800 and +800) and it is going up (or down) based on an arrow. However, there are two arrows and two numbers. Thus something else must be the intent of the numbers. Can you explain what the faction display rating is telling me for AI (two numbers/ arrows) and NPC (one number/ arrow)?

Sector Claims have been the subject of debate on the Paradox Interactive forums and it appears that you automatically gain a claim to any sector adjacent to a colony or annexed sector.It is still unclear whether a cassus belli is triggered from the AI building on a sector who you have visited as the only related answer from the devs are:"A Colony sector can only *own* 4 province sectors in addition to the center sector. It will claim any adjacent sector." and" treaties between player making them immune to each other's claims so they can settle next to each other with out penalty"Sources: forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/age-of-wonders-planetfall-%E2%80%93-dev-diary-16-colony-development-part-i.1122372/

@@FrostEesOP Ah. It sounds like sector claiming has been an issue of debate since release. I am working my way through your rather helpful videos. Maybe the one about the Stegosaurus update will be an amendment to some of the previous videos. Did you see my question about faction standing and how it is displayed with arrows? That has been a head scratcher for me. Thanks for the help.

I did not see a comment about factions come up in my notifications but..... The arrows for factions in the diplomacy screen relates to how you and the other party view each other. The arrow pointing to the right is how you view the opponent. The more the opponent takes your claimed sectors, insults you, does covert ops on you etc...., the lower it goes. The arrow pointing to the left is how the opponents views you and this is the more important one. The lower it goes, the more likely they are to declare war on you. The higher it goes, the greater the opportunity to agree on non-aggression, alliances, open borders etc...

Thank you so much. I've been playing the tutorial planet and its rather overwhelming. Funny enough I took all three the skills you mentioned for my heroes. I was a bit too slow with colonising but now I have 4 colonies (one of them I bought with influence). The research part had really overwhelmed me and I just mostly did random research except for sector upgrades and the one that gives a mod that increases range of ranged weapons

Hello God of Chaos, Thank you, it is good to know that my videos are proving helpful. Planetfall takes a little while to get used too but once you get the hang of it, you will have hours of gameplay in front of you :-)

Hi Ssiner69, Thank you and I am hoping the didactic comment is a compliment rather than it's other use :-p
