APA Pool League Match: 8-Ball: Early 8-Ball For the LoL!!!

Hey everybody!!!
I'm back to give you another APA 8-Ball Match of mine and in this match I'm up against a skill level 6. With me being a skill level 7, our race will be to 5/4 with me going to 5 and my opponent going to 4.
I hope everyone will be able to enjoy the match, especially on one spot of the match where I make a careless HILARIOUS mistake!

I mean this with no offense to his opponent but i thought the same. Some shots were questionable and bad for a mid/low 5. But I understand that effort, disgorgement, and rythm plays a huge factor sometimes. He may have just been out of it mentally early in the match.

I enjoyed your critique on the APA match. I have been involved with the APA since the early 90s and have been rated a 7 for about 15 years. I noticed that there are some comments made about the 6 you played missing some easy shots. Well I have to say I certainly have had some good and bad nights. I have played matches where I have not missed any ball I had a shot at and I have had nights that I have missed the easiest of shots. Since we are not machines this is bound to happen to all of us. I have seen many top pros miss shots we could not believe they missed.

When I asked one of my teammats with 30 plus more experience than myself about this same issue..he said "That's because they were easy shots...Your brain will take those for granted where a difficult shot your brain knows that it hard and bears down and maintain focus automatically...when you miss the hard shots..: thee misses occur due to misalignment or bad stroke. ...so when you have an easy "duck" to start or during a potential long run....you must purposely make yourself focus...make sure your on the shot line... or you miss pocket entirely..or leave hangers by hitting points too hard or if you make it..run into avoidable balls , tying up open balls into a cluster or snooker yourself with miss position or land on wrong side of next shot and then it gets harder than it should have. ....

His opponent was not a good player. I hate to be critical, but his opponent was not a good shot maker and had HORRIBLE pool IQ. That guy could come over here to the Philippines and walk into ANY bar and immediately get his ass kicked by some of the worse players in that bar.

That guy would have hit that so soft, somehow light double kiss with a straight 2 where me u & everyone I know would be scared to death of becoming trapped and do what u did. I always tell my opponent if they're about to shoot the wrong ball, I play my best every time and I don't like to win on an avoidable foul in friendly league format.

It wasn't a matter of poor sportsmanship. I moved too quickly before anyone could realized what I was doing. Even my teammates were dumbfounded on what I was doing until it was too late. Nonetheless, the responsibility is more on me for forgetting about my last ball.

Yeah, I had a match against an SL6 in the "Top Dawg" team in our APA league, and he let me shoot the wrong ball and promptly called it as foul, obviously seeing and expecting it. This is after our team had stopped the same thing from happening to one of their players earlier in the night. Doesn't change my attitude, I will always call any of my own misses/fouls defensive shots, I refuse to win that way. However, when we meet them again next time, all my team will be aware. APA pool should be competitive, but the stated goal of the league is "play the game not the rules."

When there's money involved...or when it's team format...your not playing for just fun and entertainment.....you owe it to your teammates to gain the victory. .. it's their own teams responsibility to pay attention, keep head in the game at all times , know the rules in order to create competitive matches.. you don't cheat, and when a foul is called you don't argue against when you clearly knew there was a bad.hit but a player should ask his team to watch for a potential foul when there's a lot of it occuring ...call out cue ball and object balls are frozen to same rail before shooting it because they may know and try to argue it wasn't (a playing card slipping in between ball and rail or cue ball and object ball makes them unfrozen and a good hit or a foul and a witness can verify that and the correct call is made...if your trying to slip though a tight space ...ask for spotter to back up your call......I've brushed my ball before so lightly that it rocked in place but never moved position and argued and lost because of someone on team wasn't paying attention....I learned...years later in 9 ball...the 8 and 9 were next to each other and i call my Capt over to watch the hit and I billard the cue off the 8 to drop the 9 into side pocket cue ball travel about 7 inches total .. energy input about nil ...up close you could see the 8 ball move without moving anywhere so from my opponents veiw from other side of table it appears I didn't brush the side of the 8 ball because they expected it to noticable move ..their Capt wasn't paying attention and though he agreed it was legal shot because I did thee correct thing by bringing my Capt over to watch the shot since .had the potential to be controversial if your just going to shoot without someone else watching...... ..I point out to my opponents when I'm legal shot and explain why I can shoot my cue ball though my object ball when it's frozen to it .....it's not my job to call fouls on myself but it is to verify that I did when they call me in them

Question....were you using an elevated bridge on the shot?. or should I say .. unsupported bridge? and...if so i don't know if I would have tried to take that shot with exstreem angle ...I know you wanted to hold the cue ball there to make 8 in same pocket but your adding too many variables into it and you ended up missing ...foul or not.... Not with your opponent shooting like he was ..and he misses easy shot after setting you up....again.....I would have made you pay for those mistakes though maybe not win match..... Had the shoe been on other foot....I may have attempted that so you were playing way better and I would not want you back on table.... probably run out where he missed .I would have used a cut shot to avoid the double hit.... harder to maintain shape for the 8 ball but it would provide a stable bridge so I could measure the stroke more precise ......just my opinion though ... sorry

Great match, enjoy watching your cue ball control and set up for break outs. At 15:40 you may have considered a soft shot leaving the 8 on the long rail and the cue where the 8 was. Your opponent would have poor choices a 1-2 combo or long on the 6

I've mentioned before on one of my previous APA matches that comparing skill levels to different areas is an unfair comparison. An APA skill level is largely determined by the population of players. In other words, if you're the best player in a population of 3s - 5s you'd be looked at as a 6/7. However, if you take another player that is the best in a population of 6s & 7s this player will "most likely" be the better player, but have the same rank. Even for someone like myself, I might be an SL7 but the players I know in the major cities around me are much better than I am and if I played in their cities I'd probably be a 5 or a 6.

There is also at least somewhat of an objective scale though, too. I believe that inning count (minus defenses) and games won are the biggest factor. A true 7 should average 1 inning per game, a true 6 should be 2 innings per game, ect. That seems to be a pretty consistent observation across regions.

Yes Chris, it is a foul based on how your cue ball react after the contact. I would not even try to shoot it in that way as it is super hard to not foul. Sometimes it is even hard for everybody in the bar to recognize a foul like that and may cause some unnecessary argument afterwards.

Very nice match Chris.... related to elevating the cue and because of the camera angle (cannot see from that angle if you were using the dart technique or not but just in case) I will have used the dart technique rather than just having the full hand on your cue. By the way I was in disbelieve when I saw you potted the 8 without noticing you still had the 6 on the table.

That 2-6 combo said, “Oh yeah? Ya think you’ve got a chance?” to your opponent. Amazing! Also: Either your opponent was having a bad night or he needs to be dropped down a handicap or two. His form isn’t that great but whatever works, I guess. He pokes at the ball so there’s no follow through.

I mistakenly pocketed the 8 ball while I had one ball left about a year ago in a 2000 peso ($50) match here in Manila. Thankfully, I went on to win the match and the money. But if I had been playing for a lot more money I would have been sick to my stomach. In money matches, you call everything a foul that is a foul and you NEVER help your opponent. I don't bet much and it is a good thing I do not. These guys that play for large amounts of cash - I would have a nervous breakdown. Your opponent was not a good player - but you handily beat him. And I like your thought process on a lot of these shots. Your opponent made some damn weird decisions. You are CLEARLY a superior player. Good video.

Uhh, I'm glad you could laugh about that mistake. I had something similar on a hill-hill 8-Ball match. Me with sollids, the 9 of my oponent was gone and I thought, my 1 was that nine and potted the 8 🙄 Well, it took a while for me, to smile again 😉 Regarding the elevated 4... I think, you are right. That was a foul, as the white went forward after the hit. But you deserved the win by a mile 😉

There was one time when my opponent was about to pot the 8 and there was still one remaining ball. I stopped him and told him he still had one other ball to pot. He missed his shot and I ran the table. I don’t know if it’s dumb to inform your opponent when he is about to do something that would give you the frame, but .. well I just did it.

Kudos for letting him know. That is called Sportsmanship. During league play, I almost always would let an opponent know. During a tournament...I would not. It is, after all, his responsibility to know what's going on and where he is in the match.

I can't stand the patching rule. (marking the pocket for the 8ball) calling the pocket is good enough. I also can't stand, If your opponent scratches off the break you only have ball in hand behind the headstring. This is just my rant for the day LOL. Marking the pocket just saves you from idiots (usually drunk) that that have no integrity with pool... it settles any kind of disputes. There have definitely been a lot of those in the past. So marking the pocket was the best solution.

For me its being stuck with what you drop on the break, bad rule, behind the headstring is also a bad rule. See if there is a BCA leauge where you are. I play in both leagues, I dont like the slop allowed in APA but i like the race format that they use.

I playyin a nine ball tournament last night. I was playing great. I won 3 to 2, 3 to 0, 3 to 0... I was playing for the hot seat. I'm up 2 to 1 with 2 balls to make to win. I hit the cue ball, the cue ball jumps into the air, lands on top of the object ball and I can see my tip flying through the air and land on top of the cue ball and all three go into the pocket. Needless to say, I lost that game. I rack and my opponent snaps the nine and I lose. I finished third which isn't too bad. But that's just MY luck. I can do everything correctly and then something that's completely beyond my control steps in and gets me. TTYL Chris

I feel your pain. Done the same against a 7+ in a tournament. The 8 was going to be a make-able but really tough shot. Played perfect position for it and made a real nice shot to make it. Should have pocketed the 7 ball before I done that.......oops.

Nice match Chris. I laughed when you missed cued. In the rules it talks about having a third party come over for a debatable shot like the shot you had to Jack up on. For example your opponent might have said foul and you think no. That's where the third party person comes in and what they say is final. Anyways nice video.

You are correct on calling a third person to watch close hits. I eventually plan on doing a video about this, because it's something I see quite a lot in my area where players are either unintentionally and possibly sometimes purposely double hitting the cue ball and no foul is called.

I don't know exactly how far away the CB and the 4 were, but it is possible, even with the CB going forward, that it is not a foul. On a regular shot the CB comes off the tip almost instantly. But when shooting a shot with extreme backspin, the CB does not leave the tip instantly. If contact with the 4 happens while the tip is still engaged, it is not a foul. And the result would be just as it was in your shot. I might give it to the opponent if he challenged the hit, but i wouldn't have called a foul on myself in that situation.

We have all committed the same mistakes at one time or another and I'm glad you had the fortitude to show them. I would have done nothing differently than you did concerning your patterns. I chose every option that you chose when you asked the viewers "what would you do"? Was your opponent nervous? Because he did not play at all like a 6 should have played. Same here. I wish the 6s in my region played that bad. A normal game is only 1 inning when there is a level 6 or 7 playing. Even the level 5s in my area break and run against me, lol.

I agree somewhat, from the shots we are seeing, yes. But remember, we are seeing one match. I'm an SL6, and two weeks ago played so badly a 4 could have beaten me straight up. Very. Bad. Night. But last week, finished 5 games in 8 innings with 2 defenses, definitely SL6/7 territory. I've stopped trying to judge SL from a single match, which we should all do. What we should be doing is making sure we are spotting players who are rated below level because scorekeeping and spotting of defensive shots are not as diligent as needed. | Also, anyone starting with that skillful a B&R as Chris did can put me on tilt...

Idk if you mind taking pointers or not but a couple things I noticed. At 1:26 i think this would have been your best shot to breakout the 2 ball with some force follow. if you force follow this shot correctly you could catch the left side of the 12 thus not only breaking out your 2 but giving youself position on one of your next balls. At 15:40 always if youre trying a double kiss shot like this you want to use topspin, if you used bottom spin the cueball would just have the 8 follow it as it pulls away, but with topspin the 8 would go in the opposite direction (the pocket). Not sure if this is how you usually play but you for sure play better than a 7

Lil Chris, I'm surprised you didn't use the diamond system on that shot and go for the #3 diamond with slight left, of course with a slight fudge because of where the object ball was and the high likely hood that you could have actually pocketed it.

35:14 should have aimed for a full hit on the 12 ball instead. That way you'll most likely have a shot on the 4 in the right corner pocket and also a high chance of breaking up the 8 afterwards. My mentor always told me that if a ball already goes into a pocket, more often than not you should try and bump other balls to create position other than that object ball itself.

35:00 I think the best option was a 1/4 ball hit on the 5 ball with a sliding cue ball (90° rule). You may have hit the 8 ball first, but you may have had a good break out.

Inning 12 when you had ball in hand on the 5, when you had ball in hand you could have created a natural angle with a reverse cut to come into the clutter. No need to push through the extra rail and get a possible breakout, that's just reducing the velocity of the breakout. Your opponent had a jab stroke, it cost him position multiple times throughout

Playing a great game, Chris! However your opponent seems hasty, therefore sloppy. Nerves maybe. Calm down--slow down. Toughest thing to conquer, for some.

People play the way they play. It gets them to a certain point and then they hit a wall and progression is MUCH slower at that point. Little nuances like you mention can be difficult to implement into your game after playing a certain way for such a long time, but you are correct.

Question: All the rules I seen, the table is open till a ball is called and pocketed. The rule of having to be whatever you get on the break..... is that a special rule you guys have at that pool hall or something?

Playing what you make on the break is an APA league rule. The table would remain open, after the break, if you make both solids and stripes.

On your ball in hand question, it definitely looks like a double-hit foul to me. The queue ball goes 5" forward beyond the object ball contact point before the draw kicks in. Since the spin was extreme draw the cue ball should not have moved forward after object ball contact without a double-hit.

Ok i have to say this before i go nuts..i have watched a lot of your video and they are awesome and i am an apa player myself but the players you face you say are a 6 do not shoot like they are a 6...im a 5 in 8 ball and i think i would give you a stronger game than the 6's you played and smoked...you have a really good game being the max 7 and 9 in apa but sorry to say ive played many 6's and 7's and beat and are way better than your opponents...ill definitely keep watching your videos cause one i love this game and you have amazing teaching videos and you get to play against some pros too (so jealous) lol..please show us a video of a opponent your level or less possibly with a closer out come cause like you said when you go up theres no telling who you will be playing i would love to see a closer game play and must say love the score corner and cue ball corner and the commentary of whats going on is perfect

I forgot to add I have certainly shot the wrong ball in the past and more than once. I even did it in the APA Masters tournament in Vegas. Not long after I did it Brian Parks, who has won the US Amateur Championship 5 times, did the same thing on another table.

The tip that’s on my Revo shaft is a Soft Predator Victory. My older cues have medium tips on them and I draw just the same with them.

One shouldn't draw too many conclusions from watching a single match, but I'm a little surprised that your opponent was an SL6. Maybe he was having an off night, but he made so many poor choices, got out of line right away even with ball in hand, and missed so many easy shots. I love your commentary though, it's great to see the thought process behind a good player picking apart an 8-ball rack.

At 11:09, you used outside spin, but the cue ball traveled just about perpendicular to the cushion after impact. Every time I try to do something like that, the cue ball travels well wide of the position window. Is that a "just need more practice" thing or something lower level players frequently do wrong that I can try to adjust?

A couple of things you might not be taking into account: 1. I used a little outside spin. Too much outside spin the the cue ball will spin wider off of the long rail. 2. I also hit slightly below center. By the time the cue ball reached the object ball it's rolling forward, which is why the 10-ball gets hit after contact. That hit on the 10-ball helped the cue ball path.

Being able to armchair coach from the future, I would have wondered about playing a safety kicking the 9 towards the 8 in the 5th game when you tried to two rail kick your 6 ball.

2-6 combo down the left rail to the bottom was the best pocket of the match. Your premature 8 ball ripped open an old scar memory of mine doing the same thing in a big buck game. Don't care what kind of stroke you have, if you don't stay focused anything can happen. Humility is good medicine, but it sure taste bad! Can't believe your oponent was a 6. Shot too fast and poor position strategy.

I can’t even believe how bad this league is. Ur 6s and 5s would be avg 4s in my league. That being said Chris you’d be a solid 7 in any league and ur creativity is incredible. Honestly tho Evryone shoots great when they know they can’t lose. Would like to see a match against someone ur own speed who isn’t AWFUL. U guys legit have D players as 5s and 6s.

Hey, Chris. I was wondering if you’d have any advice: I have primarily only shot pool with wooden shafts my whole life, with really the exception being my old break cue that was a one-piece fiberglass. I just ordered Johnny Archer’s 2009 Scorpion shooting cue and it is a two-piece fiberglass. My current cues are McDermott wooden cues. Do you feel that I will have a large adjustment in terms of fiberglass vs. wood and how I’ll shoot with it? I consider the cue I just purchased kinda sorta a relic, so I just wanted it for its value to me as it was.

Any time there’s a change in equipment you’ll have to adjust. The weight of the cue, the type of tip, and the type of shaft can all play a part in having to make some sort of an adjustment to playing just as well as your previous cue.

I have a BK3 also and I like them both equally. The one thing the BK Rush has over the BK3, IMO, is the Rush doesn’t have a *tink* sounds when I break with it.

Not sure I agree on the foul question. It looked to me like the cue ball reacted because you put left hand spin on it. Of course, I have the wrong angle to decide that. I would have let you determine the foul.

You've seen the matches in the Philippines no doubt. Why do you suppose Efren and Bustay play odds in their favour? In other words, their opponent us giving odds, like Efren makes the 9 ball he wins, the oppinent has to make the ten ball to win AND, the pros are winners at 21 games, the opponent at 22.

Last rack before playing the one ball,play a safe hitting the 6 an ticking the cue ball behind the 3, we all paly to win in the end rite? But that the real difference between a pot, maker an someone who thinks way more into the game than just hoping to always have a run out. That safe I talked about would have been my choice. You play really good, just need to work on some defense.

What was the skill levels? I am a APA 5. Your opponent had good defense options that he did not take advantage of. People in my league in Medford OR. also break the APA rule and just point at the pocket, they justify it by claiming as a 6 or 7 they are somehow exempt (there not) in your case, it cost you a sweep (and as you mentioned a rackless patch). I really enjoyed the play, and the insights on, breakouts and on cue ball control.

I'm a SL7 and my opponent was a SL6. Not marking the pocket didn't cost me the sweep. I knocked the 8-Ball in early and forgot that I had one more ball left on the table.
