I'm so glad to hear that it was shown in school. It's a real gem, and it makes me wish we had been shown films about Mikmaw and Ojibwa in Canada. I felt very moved by this story, and it was made really well.

I spent quite a bit of time in Whiteriver growing up. The grandmother in the show is my actual late grandmother, Helen G. Crocker. This really brings back all the memories... She would have been 96 this year. She was an awesome and resilient Apache woman.

Hello all, I am a Apache, ( White Mountain ). who now lives in the pacific northwest. My Mother is Eunice Cromwell, her Mother Addie DeClay, who are of the Roadrunner clan. my Stepfather Lloyd Kane who "starred" (ke-yay!) was in this video production. I lived in Whiteriver at that time, and was. " rocking Phil Mireau" , volunteer DJ at KNNB 88.1 Apache radio at that time. " don't worry about it" , is so true. I find myself saying that today. well, "tell her I said hello", (ke-yay!!) The Lord Bless You and Your Family Clans a ways............ AMEN.

I really cry when I see this amazing film......I am not Apache but I follow in my every day life, the Native American way of Life, the Great Spirit guides my every move...as I was told to let every breath I breathe, every step I take, to be a prayer...I have been blessed to have seen the Mountain Spirit Dances...I have been doing Sweat Lodge Ceremonies with the Native American people since the 80's....I have witnessed true Miracles too, coming from the Spirits associated with the Ceremonies.......Just about all the Native American friends that I have made in the USA happen to be Apache....so I know there is a "life connection" somewhere, perhaps back in previous lifetime I was one of these BEAUTIFUL People......I don't know, but I DO know our Spirits live forever, and yes, we do come back to reborn, to do it all over again to see if we can get it right......

I loved this movie. My brother John & I are Jicarilla. Our mother Mary was shot 3-times while running from an Abby in Germany. I was raised with 3 bone scars on my head. This from those same assassins bullets that killed our birth mother. I was raised as white & beaten by German step-mother whenever I did not comply to her white ways. My life has never been easy as, I am Bleach White. I live comfortably now in my senior years in Pacific Northwest. I would still like to learn more about Apache ways. This after following those same ways most of my past 72 years of life. I bless all Apache, everywhere!

Just to think this movie was made in mid 80s.. and life seemed so great then.. and it's been so depressing now.. a pandemic, couldnt have ceremonies or anything for 18 months.. and now were finally back at it.. but with mask on.. I sure do miss precovid life... the world is completely changed now..
@f.andris90

Don't let them change your life and change your traditions!!(that is their main goal, to wipe out EVERYTHING that remained from the past! ) Rootless people can be easily destroyed! Take off your masks! And restart your gatherings, your ceremonies, your traditions! You can't let evil stop you! The fate of America is in the native's hands too! Be carefull! And take good care of the US.

This movie is what it is all about, many do not understand. They do not hear or feel, it comes from the heart. Looking beyond what it is trying to show and say. When movies come up repeatedly the Creator is trying to show me what is next. What path to follow I watch and listen to everything that is going on for the Spirits are communicating with me to steer me in the right direction. I will listen.

Its always good to reopen our hearts to who we are born to be when your Apache. Modern times have been difficult a child of the relocated parents grew up but always Remember the first time The Gan came towards me as a child at the City By The Bay. Always my protectors now I live 62 summers at home of my ansestors . Today they protected me once again and my family. From a traveling woman.who.has been sick.with covid for a month . She was turned around and confused then lost in the high desert They let her go home and she is there 50 miles away.

One of the corner stone teachings is to learn the myriad skills of life that allow you to live life and apply them to help your community live life. The film depicts the application of ones life skills and power in an older traditional community, but it can be applied to a modern community for positive development, or selfishly applied to undermine the life of a community. I had an experience in northern New Mexico I want to share with the world..perhaps you can say something to me in reply if you have any ideas...... One summer night, I saw a light coming from the side of a cliff....out in a place where I thought there was nothing but a cliff.....It was the side of a mountain, a cliff face ....it rose up really high..a river ran below in the canyon.....I looked at the light..It was really big...it looked like a light from a big doorway...I could see the big opening, like a doorway, a very big doorway...like it was big house up there on the side of the mountain.....and I thought to myself, " Wow, that must be a heck of driveway to get to that big house up there...I am going up there tomorrow to see what that light is , where it is coming from"...Next day, I went up there...I searched all along the road first to see if I could find a dirt road that ran up the mountain...I figured there MUST be one, but I found none...not even a trail...I climbed up to the top of that cliff face....that big mountain, I looked all around, took me all day...I saw some ravens, and a big turkey vulture flying around..........All I can say , is there was no big giant house up there...no road..not even a hiking trail......nothing but the side of a sheer cliff wall..no cave was visible either.....I had seen the opening in the mountain .....open up wide...and shine a big light from inside there....a light was coming from inside the mountain......and I saw it clear as can be......I camped out there another day......and looked again for it, I was so intrigued by it...by what I had seen up there...I really wanted to find out what it was all about....but....I never saw it again.......

Michelle Hawkins you will find your way... remember your ancestors it is ok to have made mistakes - I am Irish in New Mexico I love the traditions of the Native Americans - the shields, the directions the medicine wheels, the connection with nature spirits. You walk searching, collecting information. like the movie says - there are reasons for everything.

Michelle Hawkins, you have great ancestry that you can learn from. You just have to learn. I too grew up without culture, My cherokee mother and my jewish father did not believe in teaching us anything about our culture. Find someone who will teach you about the language, food and traditions. I found a Cherokee teacher to help me with things, I have learned about my clan received a clan name and a personal name. i live in Canada now, and I drum and learning the native flute. You can learn if you want to, it's up to you

I think it has more to do with those who could see the propaganda in this. It had many beautiful people and things about it, but it was as though they twisted the spiritual experience of coming of age in their culture to a sign from the mountain spirits to leave the reservation for a "good life". It seemed to put forth the message that the Rez is full of addictions crime and dead ends. At this time the relocation program was still trying to make itself look good although it was all but a complete failure. The dreams the boy had would show he should stay and learn the ancient ways of a healer but instead the value of that is down played and the American culture ans education is glorified. But this was a tactic v government to disperse the indigenous into slums and ghettos, dilute their bloodlines and systematically cut government responsibility to maintain the very few treaties and services they are upholding as promised to the natives. But what happens when they all leave the land, take a payoff and dilute their genetics until no one is "enough" native to be owes anything? Then the government takes over the little land they were still allowed to keep, compensatory programs and funds are no longer obligations under law to the indigenous, and they quietly smoother out their culture and rituals that scare them so much. I see the beauty and the hidden agenda begin the film but I personally chose to focus mostly on the beauty of the stories and the people, but I was conscious of the not so nice intentions behind this from media. But I have faith that their resilience and divine guidance will always overcome the corruption that tries to oppress them. You can never out smart divine wisdom.

Heyyyy as a little boy one of the dancers came and woke me while we were outside up but my uncles never woke up, I was 5 years old so I covered my face but heard him again. I uncovered my face and the dancer stuck his tongue at me and laughed at me but said shhhhh and tole me to come with him. This was a head dancer so I climbed over my uncles and toddled after him we walked a long way while he sang a song then we say a bright light, he said come see who is here. A lady came from the light and was talking in my head she was very young sort of like me,she said we are going to work together for a long time you will help the people but you may have to hide so you are not be taken by the white people. If you go to thier big villages do not stay long or you will lose yourself. I heard my uncles voices calling me the Kachina and dancer said we will always be with you. The little girl said you will see me and recognise me but will not be able to touch me. My uncles began coming so I turned to look at them when I turned around the girl went into the light and it went to the sky. Ever since I have been moved from place to place but often see the girl smile at me or point or shake her head no when I make a decision.

So I'm watching this and looking at the young man and thinking he looks familiar. Did he play the medicine man in Geronimo An American Legend? If it's the same guy, he was a handsome young man and even more handsome and striking as an adult!

Despite the relocation propaganda in this prevalent at this time, the people songs and story is such a work of beauty. The ancestors where urging him to stay with people to learn the ways of a healer as a chosen mediator between the spiritual and physical world. They used this sacred sign of initiation into tribal traditions of healings as a sign to leave his people and learn the mainstream American ways bc the Rez had nothing to offer but crime addiction and pain....which isn't true at all. Those things to exist there, but they also exist in the ghettos they moved them too, only there they had none of their own culture readily available to practice and keep alive. I think a lot of people missed the hidden agenda behind this film.... probably the people participating in it were also unaware. I hope one day our shit government is force to atone for their unforgivable sins.

Back in September (2019) I got to travel to Munich Germany. I had an amazing time learning about the German culture, language and history. The food was also amazing. I have never heard of Winnetou until I visited Neuschwanstein. The attention I received over the fact that I am an Apache was unexpected. The reaction from the locals over basic Apache words amazed me. Your country is beautiful and I can't wait to return. December 2020

"Winnetou" is a fictional Apache chief, invented by Karl May, a famous german author. He lived from 1842 -1912 and wrote lots of stories about his alter ego Old Shatterhand ( an also fictional west man) and his blood brother Winnetou. They are quite popular in Germany, although there is now a debate about cultural appropriation....@@SenoraMadrid
