Background to Story The militarys chosen successor
to the Guatemalan President says he won at the polls
on March seventh, but all his opponents and most
observers say the elections were fixed. So it looks
like the status quo will be maintained in Guatemala
while the military government turns its attention to
defeating left-wing guerillas. The guerillas say the
only way to bring justice to the Guatemalan people is
by defeating the elite with bullets.

Interesante historia sobre el conflicto armado interno en Guatemala, finalizado en el año 1996 mediante un acuerdo de paz firme y duradera, pero que hoy en día las secuelas del conflicto sigue latente y los acuerdos sustantivos que dieron origen al conflicto sigue sin resolverse...saludos a quienes hacen posible esta historia...

at min 13 he mention San Juan Cotzal, one of the reason for the military coup in march 1982 was that in January 1982 the guerrillas kill a full company of soldiers with only one survivor over there, after that the army went full offensive in the triangulo Ixil which San Juan Cotzal was part of, along with San Gaspar Chajul and Nebaj, and after in Playa grande, Quiche, the Army had no American support and I only knew of one Green Beret (exchange officer) at the Military School Escuela Politecnica, by the way he couldn't run very far with us when PT, we got Israeli arms (Galils 5.56mm), Israeli cargo planes (Aravas, which you can see with the paratroopers), Swiss air ground planes (Pilatus PC 7), Yugoslavian 105 mm howitzers, we have an ammunition factory so we made our own ammunition, we even sold some to El Salvador. In 1983 it was tough, there were money cuts, but Guatemala had good credit and the National Bank issue US dollars Government Bonds to finance the war and they sold like hot cakes at 10% interest paid every 6 months, I enter the army school at 16 and every 6 months there were 2000 or 2500 applicants, so yes the guerrillas had some support but not as big as many make it, most of the soldiers were forced to serve and fight but many did it willingly also, we used small units tactics not like El Salvador with there American Advisors, tactics which they used in VietNam, most of the guerrillas armament was coming from Cuba and most was left over from the VietNam war, so they had M16 and AK47, RPG, American mines and claymores, the only time the guerrillas had some chance was when they were concentrating in killing mainly officers, but as I said before there were many applicants to enter the army school as well
