Brick Immortal this sounds familiar to the collapse of the Sears mall roof in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada in early December 2000 due to excessive snow load. Two persons were killed as I remember. Not sure if anyone was ever charged. All I know is every business with a flat roof was suddenly desperate to get the snow off their roofs.

I live in Katowice! On a positive note, over a thousand pigeons were rescued from the building, and local pigeon fanciers from around Silesia cared for them until the could be reunited with their owners. Two pigeons were found alive after spending more than 20 days buried under the rubble.

Oddly everytime I walk into any structure with 2 or more floors the first thought in my mind is "what if this structure collapses while I'm here" then it doesn't right when I think that so I say to myself I'm fine and continue. Its a really quick thought though. Especially in Las Vegas

Boss: board of director, the whole building only need 4 pilling and still withstand natural dictator and save 70% cost.

The architect gets 9 years but the businessmen who were cutting corners get less than 2 or nothing, seems like someone was turned into a scapegoat.

The court found that the CEO was the least guilty because he knew the least and was deceived by his own subordinates who had greater knowledge about the technical condition of the building. The most guilty person was the author of the executive design, who illegally changed the design of the building after construction had begun. The court found that the building would have collapsed sooner or later due to gross construction errors, and the snow have only accelerated the inevitable.

I remember this day so well. I was a student living in nearby Bytkow, about 10 min walk from the scene. On that day we went to the nearby Chorzowski park with friends to warm up our spirits with some wine. It was freezing! Snow was very deep and heavy, covered with about 2 cm of ice from freezing rain. you could walk on it and suddenly fall into 50cm. ''snow hole'' . Later on we could just hear helicopters... Very well spelled Katowice btw!

Almost everyone in Poland still remembers this catastrophe and every winter people are seriously side eyeing all flat roofs with more than 15cm of snow. They changed the law so you HAVE TO mantain the roofs after snowfall and roof inspections are more serious and frequent now.

i was there, on the spot taking part in a rescue effort right after the collapse... It was considered a real catastrophe in the area, because of Silesia being traditional hot-spot for pigeon enthusiasts and therefrore most of the victims being local... I have to say - those buildings were known for years as being in very poor condition and even poorer maintained (or not maintained at all) for everyone who once set foot inside and looked around.... It was a disaster brewing for years on end (like in very many similar cases around the world)... Worst part is - i wouldn't be suprised at all if it wasn't the last time when something like that happens in the general Silesia area....... I sincerilly wish i'm wrong tho...

Hi Sam! I'm a long-time fan of your videos, but somehow I've only found this one today. I'm from Poland and I just wanted to say how impressed I am with the accuracy and the conclusion of this video. In the first part you've summarized the 90' wild capitalism in Poland just perfectly. Sadly, "that will do" was often the case with this unregulated, freshly formed laws and let to many situations like this tragedy. To be honest, there was so much said about this even in Polish media over the years, but this plain truth - that at a time, we as a nation were ok with this rushed sloppy way of doing things in the post-transition period - is often omitted in the summaries. It's a hard and sad truth, so I guess that's why it's easier to narrate it in Polish media as a more isolated event. At least many safety laws were born from this incident, slowly correcting the wild-west-style building laws of the 90's. I can confirm that the smaller building you've shown at the end of the video is the one that the 2007 event took place in (it was hosting the 2005 edition too, I've checked on the Polish event page) - the whole huge square is the trade quarter and multiple buildings are part of it. That's probably why the address is the same. We have a similar layout in my home city of Gdańsk, where you have one address for AmberExpo facilities, but it contains multiple buildings and it's quite a large area. Lastly, I how it's just a small detail compared to the huge amount of research you had to do for the video, but I just HAVE to point it out. Your pronunciation of Katowice, especially for a non-Polish-speaker, is just spot on and BEAUTIFUL! :) Thank you for this great video and all the other ones. All the best!

The Hyatt regency change was engineer approved. It was a failure purely from an engineering perspective. That's why the Hyatt walkway collapse is still taught in structural engineering class to this day.

I just don't understand being so driven by money that you're willing to risk lives. I mean, are you that blinded by greed that you can't fathom the possibility of a disaster as a result of corner cutting?? Do they just not care and think they'll get away with it if people are injured and/or die? I recently watched Collective on Amazon. It involved a club/concert venue fire in Romania and the medical treatment the victims received afterwards that resulted in more deaths. Human greed knows no bounds and it is absolutely awful. This video is one month old. I’m in Florida and we just had a condo fall down in Surfside, by Miami. An engineer showed what has happened on YT this morning. Not too many lives saved. It’s so very sad that people die due to others cutting corners. RIP all who have died in these buildings. Florida is on top of limestone, very susceptible to sinkholes due to rising water. I expect that all coastal highrises are going to have to be inspected & monitored on a yearly basis after the collapse at Surfside.

@@dianedenham5259 Hello Diane, yes it is. I live just north of Tampa and learned to dive here, became an instructor and taught diving to others. I have been in sinkholes and caves. When you see what it looks like you wouldn’t want to build anything let alone a high rise. I watched another video this morning about unit 910 I think it was, looks like a giant sliced that building like a layer cake. Video before showed the bathroom, master bedroom with the floor and the walk in closet. After the collapse you could see the art on the wall of the bathroom, some of the closet and the flooring from the master bedroom was hanging with nothing under it. So sad.

I was just a kid when it all happened but I remember all the news coverage and the nationwide mourning. Also one of my classmate's parents who are doctors were dispatched on the site to help rescue victims and later we heard some harrowing stories of the sights those parents saw.

I’m so sick of people who put their profits over structural integrity and safety. Not all elements put into building design and construction are “pork”. Concrete mixtures that are meant to structurally support buildings and bridges are not the same as the concrete poured for roads and sidewalks. The mixtures are different because their purpose is different. The steel used to build sheds and small structures in people’s back yards and farms can in no way support and sustain a large capacity structures. Architects and structural engineers specify column placement, quantities and gauges of steel rebar and support beams, placements of stairwells/elevators, and placement/types of windows for a reason. While some are aesthetic and can be modified, the ones supporting structural integrity can not. They can’t be “cheapened” just to keep more money in pocket without risking lives. Perhaps if it became par for the course to charge and prosecute the corrupt and greedy with murder in more of these cases, things might begin to change.

I appreciate your effort to report on tragedies such as these, from a place of care and curiosity and love. I have watched several of your videos and appreciate them all. As the end of this video played into the last few seconds, my heart sank believing that they didn't subsequently dispersed the event into several smaller buildings. I believe it is most likely that those who were instrumental in organizing and attending probably perished or were injured, and those enthusiasts who remain are too traumatized to attend future events. The smaller building is all that was necessary. 😢🇵🇱❤️‍🩹

Horrifying!😱 In an instant...BAM! Tons of ceiling, pipes, wires, and snow drop down! Those poor people.💔 Living in southern California, we have the possibility of an earthquake at any second. But frankly we don't live on edge about it. They're typically mild. YET, I can promise this, if I ever find myself in a city where snow is required to be shoveled from building roofs to prevent collapse...I'd be an anxious wreck with every snowflake that falls! Keep up the good work. I realize that the high standard you use in these videos is difficult and time-consuming, I wanted to say that I would appreciate more detail in the engineering mistakes on these structures. I do however realize that much of the material about design could be extremely difficult to access. It would seem to make an even better series if you were able to bring on a forensic engineer to help with the workload since I can see nothing that should be left out in your videos. the board member Bruce R was sentenced to 18 months on november 26 2019. his sentence was reduced by 1 year he had spent in arrest by that time.

In case you wonder, calling balcerowicz plan a "shock therapy" is not exaduration in slightest. Yes, systemic transforamtion was ulitimetly sussesfull, but, belive me, cost was HIGH.

Can't help wondering if we will see similar stories arising following recent economic changes such as Greece's "austerity measures"...? 😕 Unfortunately the international financial institutions involved just don't seem to be particularly concerned about the human cost of these initiatives, & money saved often seems to come out of essential health, safety & welfare systems 😢

We're good (better than non-speaking non-writing apes) - but not _that_ good. *Nowhere near* good enough to maintain an ideal existence - or even to exist - in the long term.

I remember that, it was all over the news when I got some bad news about my health. Everyone was removing snow from the roofs after that collapse. Every flat, super market, mall and school. I think they damaged roof in my school during this madness and we had leaks. One of the smaller supermarkets in my area collapsed a year or two later due to snow as well, but it was closed and nobody got hurt.
