USGS staff are so great with information. They have just answered one of my big questions I have had. You asked my question for me thank you and that was about the 2 different kinds of lava and when they are erupted. Great move Scott.

The North Shore of Lake Superior is made up of billion year old lava rivers. If you know what to look for, you can see the aa (all 3 layers), pahoehoe, and solidified gas bubbles nearly everywhere along the shore. Watching videos like Scott's gives insight into how the old lavas formed, and to what the Kilauea lavas will look like many millions of years from now.
@lesahanners50576 жыл бұрын
Man Scott that is really hardcore! As the days go by it seems so unbelievable how fast this has all developed. You should get a medal for all of the great footage you ahve been getting or a contract with National Geographic. In fact I am amazed they haven't been all over this. In the old dayss they sure would have. I did not want to say this but we are not returning to Hawaii. We have sold our home and 1 acre and have moved to our other property in Lyle, Washington. The reason I said nothing before is that I did not want folks to think we had fled because of the eruption. It was not the reason, but for reasons of my health I won't bore you with. The folks that bought out place, far from being discouraged in buying, were excited to be arriving at such an interesting time. I encourage folks to listen and learn from what you are telling them and to understand that sad as this is it is only a small part of Hawaii and everything was pretty much business as usual everywhere else on the Island when we left a few days ago. Mahalo

whitemannativemind We lived about ten miles from Scott in Hawaiian Paradise Park, and watched the red glow in the sky grow every night. Several of our close friends have lost their homes in Leilani Estates and have moved in with friends and relatives elsewhere on the Island. We had sold our home a week before this all started and were somewhat surprised our buyers didn't back out after this all began. However they were very aware of the Island having been there many times and they knew how the lava zones work. They were really happy and excited to be moving to the Island at such an interesting and exciting time. I on the other hand have asthma which was worsening from the vog and neighbrhood garbage burners. It was better for me to move back to our property in Washington state. However, we have fire seasons here that are hideous sometimes, so I will have to travel elsewhere when that occurs. Life can be hard wherever you live, so you just have to enjoy your life as much as possible and roll with it.

Main Street Boxer True but not in the same extent as the above mentioned. It like equating this to the danger of crossing a street. Both can be dangerous. However, crossing the street the danger is obvious and some what predictable. Not so in the case of volcanic activity.

cookie Yes, Scott is taking a calculated risk. As for goods to the island, the lava has covered about 8 square miles. The Big Island is 4,028 square miles (larger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined) and growing. The affected area is no where near the ports and airports.
