I played Ape Escape 2 quite a bit as a kid. My grandma had a ton of games at her house and she got AE2 after her copy of AE1 (which I also played a lot of) broke. I got my own copy in 2015/2016. I fell in love with it all over again and beat it 100% 6 times in under a month when I got it, 3 as Jimmy and 3 as Spike. I love the graphics, the music, and it has some of my favorite levels in the trilogy. Jimmy is also my favorite of the AE protagonists, like his design the most. I haven't played the PS4 re-release, the UK voice acting kinda turned me off. I actually completely forgot they pronounced Pipotchi differently in the UK dub. It's my favorite Ape Escape, one of my favorite platformers, and one of my favorite games of all time. I'm glad to see you cover it, peope don't talk about the sequels that often.

Ape Escape 1 was my first experience using joysticks on a home console. I had to buy a ps1 controller with sticks to play it. Prior to this game I had never seen a controller with joysticks. It's a vivid memory from childhood.

I often called the "Gimmicked Monkeys" "Costume Monkeys" since that's what they are. Going from Monkeys dressed as knights with a shields and swords, Clown Monkeys that spit fire at Jimmy/Hikaru, and some just have costumes that like Ant says, are related to the level itself. Since this was my first Ape Escape game as a kid (I had the PS4 Port) it was pretty unique and fun all around. When I went back to play On The Loose, I got to see a few different mechanics and fun little minigames like the boxing minigame. Though having to collect enough Specter Coins to unlock them just felt like a pain in the neck to do, ESPECIALLY when you sometimes may need a new Gadget to reach them.

The Monkey Soccer minigame was my favorite of the minigames here when I was a kid, although I could never beat the final level in it. That aside the main game is fun and enjoyable. Also the reason the names are different in the EU version is because those are their original japanese names-the NA versions of the AE games changed them to be Americanized.

I’d like to dedicate this genuine post and my sheer, absolute and utmost passion to one of my personal (can’t speak for all) favorite video game series out there! And probably my favorite platform game ever! And to all my childhood friends who have experienced a similar gaming lifestyle as I as we all grew older. Anyone reading this who is a 90s gamer would know EXACTLY what I mean. I was always an RPG kind of kid growing up. But Platform was a BIG part of my childhood as well. The 90s was the age of the Platform. The most successful games in those years were dominated by the platform genre. And I couldn’t be more happier & passionately pious to show my collection from one of the MOST underrated, MOST under-appreciated and MOST understated platform series in history! Even Sony (the people who were responsible for publishing this franchise) had been neglecting and undermining this series for years. Not only did this game teach me the importance of catching cute super intelligent monkeys with peak point helmets in order to save the world, but it sort of gave birth to my humor, my fun side and comical nature grew out from this game’s humor actually. It is sad to see that this game has been overshadowed and nearly forgotten by many many fans out there. I think most of us here agree that the first game (rewind to 1999) was the biggest one-hit wonder at that time. It wasn’t just one of the highest-selling platforms back then, but this game was the very FIRST video game EVER to use the DualShock controller and the FIRST official game to get tested by the analog stick system! That’s some big shit. Sony didn’t even give any justice to the fact that this actually happened and how important this series was. I remember I found the game SO hard for me because it was my very first time using the controller on the PlayStation. It took a while for me to accommodate myself to it but in the end, I’ve gotten the hang of it. Even though the series couldn’t continue on in the end, it marked a BIG mark in the history of gaming due to that fact. And I don’t think it could ever be completely erased! 💛
