I Love It. I'm Constantly Learning. Sheila E. Is The Reason That I Play Drums & Percussion.

Thank you for this tutorial! And thank you for acknowledging the comments female percussionists hear from some people. It’s so true! We get back hand compliments all the time. So do female musicians who play instruments like Sax, bass, trumpet, etc. Well… time to shed some more! Love the lessons! 🌺

Sheila E. playing with Tito Puente was what got me into hand percussion. Hey smile is the most electrifying thing about her and her talent is one of the best. She's in fact, my hero for sure.

Love Sheila E!! #1. One thing to remember Eric! Left handers have to adapt to a right hand dominant world.. Most of US have to become nearly ambidextrous just to get through the day. So as a percussionist I've learned to play all of my rudiments and patterns with a L lead and R lead with hands, sticks and mallets. I've been teaching that to my students too for about 50 years. R/L BALANCE! I encounter a lot of HS age drummers who drum well with right hand lead, that cannot keep a smooth clave or shaker rhythm with the left hand. As s conguero on 3 congas I sometimes switch the tumbao llrlllrr to rrlrrrll to change up the low tumba during the bridge of the song. just to add a little different tone color. Try it some time. LOVE the channel, I share it with my students! Respect man YOU are doing GREAT! Charlie

Absolutely agree. When a song has a KEY change or modulates, like during a middle 8, a TONE change is necessary to reflect the melodic modulation.

Born in 1952 in Sa Francisco ca. Heard all the top Latin bands / Latin ROCK bands!!! Being born & growing up in a Latin household it was AUTOMATIC/ loved them and saw them all. Tito Puente/ Santana / Malo / Azteca / Top / War / just to name a few. Thanks for bringing back all the fond memories from the 60’s to present day. WILLY CA 😎🥁🌹

I really love and admire how you pay informed and heartfelt homage to the great artists whose material and technique you share, and the tradition that it all comes from. You do it brilliantly, artfully, and effectively.. Many thanks bro.

Hello Eric! There we are again. Great tutorial about Sheila's tumbao. In the last few weeks i was exercising a similar tumbao on 5 congas, i love how it sounds. A few years ago i met Sheila in Belgium and i was also invited on stage during her clinic. I'm taller than Sheila however standing next to hear i felt tiny as a ratoncito.. A real lady with high positive energy and incredible rhytmic talent.

Greetings from beautiful Cornwall, UK, Eric. Truly it is great to have you back and lovingly giving us your experience, exuberance, knowledge and humour. This is a very challenging pattern with its heavy dependence on the no-dominant hand. You are so right about going outside of your comfort zone - it is the only way we can learn anything useful in our lives. I have already started on this one and I'm going to nail it...!! Love your new set -up and it must be much easier for you now to have it all 'ready to go'. Although , I must say that your sitting-room 'studio' had a cosy, at home feel about it. Onwards and upwards..... Love , respect & thanks. Blair.

No brother !!! Sheila E is NOT LEFT HANDED. !!! The reason Sheila E sets up like that ( left hand style ) is because when she was learning to play from her father . She watched her dad play sitting in front of him so see saw a mirror view …. And as we all know, watching yourself in a mirror.. Everything is opposite… So when you raise your right hand up in the air. It looks like your left hand.. So that’s why she plays congas and timbales LEFTY STYLE. However, If you’ve ever noticed, when she plays a drum kit or bongos . She actually plays right handed !!!!! I asked her about it at a Drummers for Jesus clinic In Dallas Tx ..

I've noticed 60% of my top 5 favorite drum kit drummers in life are like Sheila (Left handed playing right handed setups, (Sheila learned as a small child sitting "opposite" her right handed father, so I assume these other left handed players learned & played on right handed setups from the Get go). Namely Thee Undisputed heavyweight drumming world champion (Produced first Pete & Sheila Escovedo album "Solo Two") ~ Billy Cobham (2) Lenny White (3) Sheila E (4) Michael Walden (right hand) (5) Tony Williams (Right hand) Left handed people are very "Geniacal" especially in the drumming world / * = I made up my own word "Geniacal" (As in that is a "Geniacal*" Idea) LMAO ~ Keep up the good work home slice

She was a judge on the TV show Battle of the Bands. There was only one latin band during the whole contest. She gets up from her judge chair during their song, goes on stage, takes the timbale solo from the bands timbale female player and had the nerve to say that she didn't see any musicianship from the band. Sorry, I have no respect for her after her poor musicianship.
