@TheStoicBeacon-TGG2 сағат бұрын
I completely agree with Marcus Aurelius here. It's easy to get caught up in endless discussions about what a "good man" should be, but true growth comes from living those values every day. It’s about embodying them in our actions, not just our words. Have you found any particular practices that help you stay focused on being a better version of yourself?

I've suffered 2 house fires in my life, both due to electrical faults. Both of which I lost everything, over 10 years ago. I'd never heard of stocisism until recently. But I guess life has taught me this lesson the hard way. The things I've lost were mostly replaceable, except for family photos. However, I've found myself talking and reminiscing about those lost moments with my family recently, and I've come to realise, the photos didn't contain the memories, we do. As hard as this was to deal with at the time, it's made me the person I am today. Very little phases me. I want less in life, I'm more grateful for what I have. And ultimately, I'm happier. I don't wish this on anyone, but life has a strange way of teaching you what you need to know. Good luck in life too everyone.

It is confusing. Because you hear the quote "you don't have control over your mind & emotions, but you can however choose how to respond to them." In essence it's true we don't know how thoughts enter our mind and how much of that is involuntarily, science hasn't caught up yet. You think about something and you feel good, but another thought comes up and it make you feel bad. Why? Because some rules you agreed on of what is good and bad? For example, in Europe burping after eating is rude and people might look at you with anger, but it is appreciated in China because it means you liked the food. So you can also say "whatever happens, good or bad, i will always choose a positive interpretation." It sounds simplistic but if you just practice that often enough you start to believe that and it becomes your new belief. So then we cán control our thoughts and emotions if we can deliberately insert new thoughts which create positive emotions.

Genuine stoicism is not about feeling nothing, it's about feeling everything and thinking nothing of it. A lot of people put on an act of stoicism in the form of "I'm not upset, I do not care, I'm not bothered, I'm not emotional." The point of the philosophy is not to act like you do not care or tell yourself and others you are not affected. The point is that as a human you will care about certain things, but you shouldn't care about the fact that you do care. Look at the Zeno example. He said, you cannot control the things that happen to you, but you can control how you react to them. Does that mean that you must put on a facade that nothing happened? No. It means you accept what has happened, you feel what you feel, and then you carry on despite that. If you're angry then you're angry. If you're sad then you're sad. Acting like you're not, is not stoicism. It's more self delusion. Accepting the fact that you're angry or sad, and then leaving it at that and moving forward, not letting those feelings affect you beyond simply feeling them, THAT is the philosophy of Zeno. He didn't say he unbreakable. There is no such thing in existence. He said, it is better to bend than to break, and accepting the fact that life is going to bend you plenty, and accepting the fact that you don't have to think anything of it, is the essence of stoicism. I prefer Musashi's philosophy myself. Stoicism is something that can be put on when it's not properly understood. The "I'm rubber you're glue" understanding instead of the "if it sticks then it sticks" understanding. Musashi's philosophy is more concrete. It's about what you do, and do not do. Not what you think or do not think. It's genuine by definition.

Nor can you attempt to cite logic or reason because any lack or presence of logic or reason would be predetermined and set in stone. So the will in your words, in a world without will, would be absolutely nothing at all. Just noise on the wind, without purpose, influence or ultimate meaning. That's what saying "free will doesn't exist" ultimately implies. After all, how can you change anyone's mind, or anyone change they're own mind, if they've been predestined never to do so? It's a bit like talking to a wall innit? But I guess that wouldn't be your choice after all, if free will doesn't exist. 🤷🏻♂️

@georgitetimov49102 жыл бұрын
I can't agree more. When I was 15 I had a really tough time with addiction, but I overcame it. Over time I developed the philosphy explained in the video on my own. I began thinking in the exact same way as stoics without even knowing that's what they're called. My first understanding was that we percieve reality through our senses and these senses create emotion, but emotion is simply controled by the brain and the chemical reactions that happen there. So, since we are able to control our brain, we can actually manipulate emotion and perception in a way that benefits us the most or at least hurts us the least. After that, I developed almost every other idea showed in the vid. By the time I was 16 I felt like I have already made the transition between a child and an adult in maturity. Every day I felt a bigger and bigger difference between me and my peers, because I felt that they still treated everything as careless kids and hadn't realized a lot of things. Now I am so glad I found this video and this comment so that I can learn more about Stoicism!

Key principles of Stoicism: Dichotomy of Control: Stoicism teaches that some things are within our control (our thoughts, choices, and actions) while others are not (external events, other people's actions, and circumstances). Stoics believe that focusing on what is within our control leads to inner tranquility, while accepting what is beyond our control helps us avoid unnecessary suffering. Virtue as the Highest Good: According to Stoicism, the ultimate good in life is the development of moral and intellectual virtues. These virtues include wisdom, justice, courage, temperance, and moderation. Stoics believe that by cultivating these virtues, individuals can live a good and fulfilling life. Acceptance of Nature: Stoicism encourages individuals to align their will with the natural order of the universe. This means accepting the impermanence of things, embracing change, and recognizing that suffering and setbacks are inevitable parts of life. Negative Visualization: Stoics practice negative visualization, which involves contemplating the worst-case scenarios to develop gratitude for what one currently possesses. By imagining the loss of something or someone, individuals can learn to appreciate and value them more fully. Amor Fati: Amor fati, or "love of fate," is a Stoic concept that encourages individuals to embrace and love their fate, whatever it may be. Stoics believe that everything that happens, even hardships and misfortunes, is part of a larger plan and should be accepted without resistance. Tranquility of Mind: Stoicism aims to cultivate inner peace and tranquility by freeing individuals from negative emotions such as anger, fear, and anxiety. By practicing self-control, self-discipline, and detachment from external outcomes, Stoics strive to maintain a calm and balanced state of mind.

And that is literally the only reason I've been sad recently and I knew beforehand that it probably wouldn't go my way. And I used to say to myself that I was happy with just ever knowing her even she'd vanish from my life in the future but now that it's slowly happening it's not as good as I thought it would be. I am still grateful for her but I really dislike the fact that we probably won't ever keep in touch after a year.

@@rat7570 Hello there, I can see that you're struggling with a scenario that the video described, which is placing your source of happiness/contentment in others instead of placing it in yourself, your life, and your positive actions towards others. The proposed solution to this is tweaking your mindset so that you're more content with the uncontrollable nature of life, which includes situations such as yours... However, as someone who's been doing a lot recently to overcome depression, improve myself, and be more stoic, I think that trying to not be upset over failed romantic plans or failed friendships is one of the hardest parts of stoicism. It seems so difficult to be callous to the pain of a failing romantic relationship, especially if finding a partner is one of your long-term goals.

Stoicism is understanding that everything in life is neutral, unless we give it meaning. The goal is to just experience everything with all our senses. Not everyone will be content with whatever they stop at in chasing their dreams. Which is why suggesting working hard, impossibly hard, and you will always achieve your dreams is simply not true and unfair to the lie you (society) is selling. Not everyone can be a millionaire. It doesn't matter how hard you work there will always need to be people that aren't. Just as to have a favourite top means you need to have another top. Otherwise you can't have a 'favourite'. I know this is perhaps semantics...but speaking specifically to the words you use only. Accepting what you have is good enough isn't fulfilling or chasing your dreams is it? It's merely accepting what is and what you have. Two very different things. Again...there is nothing wrong with either..and I'm not at all suggesting there is anything wrong with not achieving your dreams...but your 1+X (where 1 is the effort and X is all the other variables and intangibles) doesn't always equal 2 I'm afraid.

I always wondered, what was wrong with me. I always felt unhappy, feeling like life is useless and unlogical. One day, I downloaded an app called "The Stoic". I opened it and read the first few citations from Marcus Aurelius and so on. Immediately, I understood that the way of them thinking reflects exactly my point of view on everything we can control - ourselves. The way we treat ourselves and others around us is not the key for binding to people, yet it is an important part of being happy - and making other people around one happy as well. Thanks to the philosophers from 2000 years ago, I finally understood who I am: a Stoic. I am not confused anymore and very proud of who I have become, without knowing Stoicsm at all.

Every breath, cracker, smile and ray of sunshine fills us with more vitality and life than a new car, a diamond ring or designer handbag. A sad truth about most existentialism like stoicism, absurdism, etc, is that society is unable to comprehend the idea of enlightenment over insanity. If you aren’t like everyone else, you’re considered insane or “lost”.

I really hope that I had this kind of mindset since I was in early/mid teenage days (I'm now turning 20). My mindset (plus the series of things that really distracted me to a great extent) had really made my life worse. But I have to say also that it's mostly because of my ugly mind set. I can only now accept what has happened and continue to live and be happy and content and a better person right now.

my main takeaway from reading Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations" was that nothing in the world is 'good' or 'bad' they just 'are'. The idea or notion of 'good' or 'bad' is ascribed to inanimate objects and circumstances that are indifferent to human circumstance and emotion. We ascribe the status of good or bad and then live that - and that's where our true power lies - we have the power to control how we perceive our circumstance and reality.... when you get into it it's a pretty Utopian, libertating and freeing mind/spirit set. What I learned as an addict is that If I am upset and worrying about something in the past than I am missing the present moment and all of it's blessings. Stressing over past events is akin to self-harm
@alexcamarata11423 жыл бұрын
@Arthur Frayn, Your response has me thinking, and I appreciate that. I think Marcus' ideas may be misinterpreted by you. He could surely tell anyone the life of a drug addict was "bad" because his belief regarding attitude was based upon what the Logos required, according to my interpretation of Gregory Hayes' translation of Marcus' book. Certainly, the Logos would not require someone seeking solely external pleasure. It requires a man who moves like time but can think appropriately and rationally; indifferent but also seeking to act according to the greater good. To be a real citizen of the world. Do you not think the person you responded to makes a decent case, even if it is not as well explained as you would like it to be? Is it not on the right track? Where is your sensibility? You seem well-read, so surely you know Marcus' ideas are not as black and white as you painted them to be. In my opinion, Marcus shared with Plato a sort of distaste for moral relativism. On that same line, they both resolve that humans can determine "good" from "bad" and arrive at that conclusion by what connects all humans to each other: the ability to reason. Your first paragraph seems to describe nihilism to me, not stoicism. A follower of Stoicism, especially a mind like Marcus', knows that a life addicted to drugs is never "good." In fact, he explains this belief of "good" and "bad" quite often in Meditations. A person addicted to drugs cannot act wisely, seek justice, or practice patience while influenced by drug effects or by the recurrent thoughts drugs evoke. They are not in control of their emotions. To me, nihilism is a large factor among many others that act to justify sociopathy and the improper function of peoples' cognitive immune systems, but this man's take on Stoicism is certainly not "a justification for sociopathy." Stoicism may be a way to better living by aiding to cleanse the thought process of public opinion.

So drugs, rape, murder, etc…..none of that is bad? Okie doke
@JackHaveman523 жыл бұрын
@@COD4JESSE Boy.....did you ever miss the target. It's almost as if you're facing the wrong direction. Where did he say that drugs were good? I didn't read that. He did say that he was an addict and that he tries to longer worry about the past, the past being something he has no control over. This is significant because that worry was causing him self-harm....his use of and addiction to drugs. Drugs aren't good or bad per se. It's how you use them and he acknowledged that he was using them in a destructive way. That's what he was saying. I'm sure that he looks at rape and murder using a variation of that same perspective but I'm not going to assume how he looks at it. At least, not in the way you make assumptions.

I had decided to finally workout and fix my health, but then I got my health report back. I had high cholesterol and diabetis 2. I had a day where I doubt everything around me, and everything I could and did. I then used that hard time to make it a motivation. I have lost 25KG/55 LBS in 3-4 months. Instead of giving up and let myself be consumed by it, I build it into something that I could move on from and learn from. Learning to be healthy, learning to eat well, working out and taking care about my body. I still have a good bit to go, but I’m glad I had this happen. I learned not to take my body for granted, to focus on me and learn from this experience. Many other things have also happend in my life, but I think that is a good example. I didn’t know I could relate with the ideals of stoicism untill this video. Thank you.

Unironically, I may have adopted stoicism unintentionally. Being a person born in the fine line of poor and middle-class, I've learned how to accept the life I was given. I recognize my situation and instead focus on the gifts rather than the misfortunes we had. It is not as if I don't feel sad about it, I do. But I don't dwell on it and I just wish for the best. I am also a very timid person, often times I get dragged to my friends and other people's shenanigans. I can't do anything about it, I may feel annoyed or pissed off, but I don't let it affect me. In a way, it is kind of the same as the voluntary discomfort exercise. And to be clear with you all, I am not saying I can't feel emotions, I can feel just as much pain, anguish, sadness, happiness, etc. as all you guys. It is just that my standing in life has led me to learn how to control my emotions better than others. I remember being a kid frustrated about other kids having things that I don't, I had a talk with my dad about it, we cried and reconciled. My point being, is the fact that I unknowingly adopted a similar mindset to Stoicism might just prove that Stoicism really works.

This is blowing my mind right now. Ive made some bad choices in life and went down a long long hard path and lost everything including the person i cared about most in life. Its seems to me you have to have this mindset in life to truly be happy. This is how i operate and ive never been happier. Not even close. I think stress has a lot to do with it and just accepting things for what they are and to not worry so much about the things that actually dont matter. I literally cant remember the last time i was actually pissed off about something or upset or disappointed, idk i guess when your going through addiction as bad as i was you either learn to live correctly or you die. Its just crazy to me to see this condensed into a 12 min video. Thanks for making this man im going to send this to at least 10 ppl that need to hear this right now. I think this would be really good for other ppl struggling with addiction to hear. You just have to try to see the good in any situation, it could have almost always been worse and if it couldnt then you just have to have a laugh. You need to learn how to laugh at yourself and accept your flaws and just be honest about everything including yourself. Dont worry so much about what you THINK you need to do in life and just do what makes you happy, because in the end thats what REALLY matters. also in my line of work ive been around a lot of older ppl getting close to moving on and one question i would always ask is "if you could go back in time and give yourself some advice or someone my age what would it be, or whats the biggest regrets that youve had in life?" They have already lived a full life and been here way longer than us so its prob best to find out the mistakes and regrets theyve made and try not to do the same. Id say the 2 answers i received the most were "dont worry so much about the things that dont really matter, things will work out one way or another and just learning how to accept change because everything does and even learn how to welcome change. Also to stop living for everyone else and stop doing things just because you think it is expected from you and to start living for yourself and doing what makes you happy or at the very least doesnt frustrate you on a day to day basis, money isnt everything. Ok let me stop. Good video man.

I hope they're helpful: "The chief task in life is simply this: to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals not under my control, and which have to do with the choices I actually control. Where then do I look for good and evil? Not to uncontrollable externals, but within myself to the choices that are my own…" -Epictetus "When we shift our perception, our experience changes." -Lindsay Wagner "I've had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened." -Mark Twain "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." -Aristotle "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." -Max Planck "The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts." -Marcus Aurelius I wish you the best in life!💜
