Answers for Practice FRQ: a) Stage 2 on the graph represents the fastest population growth rate. This is because a country in this phase will be undergoing industrialization, leading to improvement in healthcare and stable food, clean water availability. As a result, the death rate of the country falls rapidly, while the birth rate remains fairly constant due to the generational gap present in the society, leading to an overall population growth and development of the country. b) An economic indicator for a country in this phase would be a low per-capita GDP. This is a result of higher birth rates in the country, with majority of individuals still stuck in the agricultural sector. As more people make the transition from the agriculture to industrial sector, the per-capita GDP will eventually rise.

Spot on for part a). In part b) a low per-capita would generally be an indicator of a country in early phase II, but remember that the GDP would be increasing throughout phase II with industrialization.

@@Mr.Smedes Thank you for your response! I'll make sure to rephrase my answer the way you have mentioned, in case I come across this question on the real test!

Stage 2 has the highest population growth. This is due to the fact that the TFR is high, as women have less education and children provide manual labor for agrarian families. Another reason that it is high is because infants that die are often replaced. One indicator of this country would be low GDP and high TFR.

Stage 2 is where the population grows the fastest, this is because there is a high birth rate and a low death rate. A country in this stage, is industrializing, and there will be an increase in available healthcare to the public, leading to a lower death rate.

In age structure diagrams, a steep population pyramid indicates growth. Stage one of the DTM shows a similar chart, but it means stability. How does this work?
@Mr.Smedes

Great question! Steep age structure "pyramids" typically do mean population growth, but not if the death rate and infant mortality rate are SO HIGH that they more or less offset all of the births. We don't typically see this in the world anymore as all countries have entered some point in phase 2, but it is still represented in the DTM diagrams.

Why is Stage 5 not included in this?
@Mr.Smedes
@Mr.Smedes Жыл бұрын
Hey Hannah, APES textbooks and past exam questions have always been based on a 4 stage model so that's what I used in this video! If you do happen to run into a 5-stage question, just remember that the population decline due to low birth rate that can begin to be seen in some stage 4 countries continues in stage 5.

@@Mr.Smedes Awesome! Thank you for the clarification. Your stuff has been SUPER helpful as a new APES teacher. I also noticed on the slides for this section that the graph for this had cropped out Stage 5, so I was unsure on why it wouldn't be included. Thanks again for all you do!

@@Mr.Smedes I was also looking at some of the resources you have on your website. Specifically the "APES 2020 Exam Reference Sheet". Is there not an explanation page for FRQ #3 because it is essentially the same the FRQ #2 but with calculations?
