you could do a mason jar test, to test the soil texture. By measuring the percentage of silt, sand, and clay, you would know what the Farmer's soil texture is. With those results, you might be able to identify, if it needs more sand, to make more water go through, or if it needs more clay so that it has better retention. This would depend on the results, and on the crops they are planning to have there.

I have been told sometimes that clay is more porous than sand, but sometimes vice versa. Could you explain this.

Hey Vraj, great question! This is a tricky topic. Clay is actually more porous than sand, because it's particles are smaller and therefore it has a greater total ratio of pore space to solid clay particle space. Sand has larger pores, though, and therefore a greater permeability to water. My explanation in this video is a bit off as I'm approaching this concept from the scope of typical APES exam questions in which permeability and water holding capacity of soils are the main focal point, not the technical definition of total pore space volume. I'll try to go back in and add a correction to it, but you've been the first to notice this. Good eye!

​@@christine2394 Basically, they said that the strict scientific definition of porosity would make clay "more porous" than sand. For AP Environmental purposes -- I assume you are also cramming for the exam -- clay's porosity is a type we don't need to worry about. For APES, you need to know that the large spaces in between grains of sand make it easy for air and rainwater to seep through, while the tiny grains of clay stick tightly together and don't have much room for air or water to get in. Hope this helps!
