Mom Kisses And Cleans Her Sleeping Baby Orangutan!

Now baby Myrtle at Chester Zoo is 1 year old - take a look back at when Baby Orangutan Myrtle was aged 2 months old
More previously unreleased footage this video continues with adorable sleepy baby orangutan Myrtle in mom Sarikei's arms. Bornean Orangutan baby Myrtle was exhausted after being in outside in the fresh air and having a big feed from mom ! While the baby was sleeping mom Sarikei took the opportunity to relax and to clean her precious baby's face, showing her with motherly orangutan kisses, she makes sure to gently clean the baby's eyes and ears, she is so gentle that baby Myrtle hardly flinches and continues to sleep contentedly !
Also in the video Sarikei keeps an eye on her older son Tombol who gets a fright as he suddenly spots a keeper who interacts with him through a small window in the enclosure

Tombol also makes an appearence in the video, he can be seen swinging and climbing clutching hold of his blanket / sack while swinging and climbing. Mom sarikei keeps a loving watch of him even though she is pre occupied with her new baby !

Myrtle was born on 31st August 2023 to Mother Sarikei and Father Willie
Sarikei is an experienced mother orangutan who has had previous offspring including her son Tombol who lives with her and the rest of the Bornean Orangutans at Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo is has a very successful record of Orangutan births at the zoo and most of the Orangutan Mothers are able to rear their own young without the assistance of zoo staff, this is largely due to the expert care and facilities the World Class Zoo provides for the animals.
The current animal population have had valuable experience with babies and have observed relatives caring for young, using this learning and experience to enable them to rear their own offspring
Birth of critically endangered orangutan at Chester Zoo
Bornean Orangutans have been considered critically endangered since 2016 with an only an estimated 100,000 left in the wild. They are seriously in danger of extinction which makes the birth of this new baby orangutan very special indeed

@@rg-pq1kb She was born in captivity and descended from rescued apes. They have the very best facilities with large well planted outdoor areas. The indoor area may not look aesthetically pleasing to humans but it has been designed by primate experts to meet their needs, and they mostly chose to be in this area over going outside Hopefully one day all orangutans will no longer be critically endangered and will be safe to live in their wild habitats.

Myrtle is out cold. What a cutie. Tombol as usual is great to see. His reaction was so fast. Just sitting there minding his own business all quiet and then wham, instant reaction. He's the best, just love him.

Tombol got a little fright there from the keepers, walking around in the back off show areas! He is growing up so fast and slowly getting used to mom dedicating most of her time to baby, they still have sweet interactions, though, and baby Myrtle is now playing with her siblings !
