It's the same language, but sometimes it's difficult to understand each other 'cause of various accents & dialects :] The medias in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany & Austria usually use High-German, which will be understand by every German speaker. I speak German but that song has a very heavy accent, when I first heard it I only understood a few words but after a while I started to understand a bit more :D

I learned "German German" in college, and I can understand German when spoken from people in Germany and Austria (kind of XD), but for some reason Swiss German is really difficult for me to hear. D8 I've heard that people in Switzerland can understand all other German speakers, but that people from Germany (for instance) have trouble hearing Swiss German, too. Is this true? It sounds really pretty, however.

@papajack222 Oh, you meant it like that XD High German is Standard German, which means, this is basically what pupils learn in school, is used in the medias, etc., which is used in all the German speaking areas. Low German is mainly spoken in the Northern part of Germany, not in Switzerland. I'm not quite sure what you mean with Basic German...I'd think of Standard German :''D There are a lot of German dialects, just like every language has its dialects :]
