Great idea for an alternative Christmas Dinner with limited cooking! In the cold winter months I do a one pot stew with a can of stewing steak, a can of mixed veg and a can of potatoes sliced.

We did this for Sunday dinner during Storm Arwen when our electricity was off. I had a bag of cooked chicken slices and some Yorkshire puddings in the freezer, so we had tinned potatoes, carrots and peas, heated in one pan on the gas stove, and the chicken heated up in the gravy in a pan and the defrosted Yorkies warmed up around the gas hob. It just takes a bit lateral thinking! 😊

ever tried making the mash in the pack ? one less dish, also an old idea nicked from someone else he took a pack of Garibaldi biscuits put a pinhole in the original packaging rhen vacuum packed them, his testers declared them perfectly OK after 12 months I have no idea how well it would work with other types though it's probably a suck it and see process

Only a northerner would have industrial sized gravy. 😅 Personally I would've added a tin of peas to the carrots and mixed up a packet of sage and onion stuffing mix.

i like to keep some packs of mash comes in useful . a friend uses half boiling water half hot milk and as you said butter and its like mash from scratch and its really nice . when i use a packet i make it like my friend said . also got tins of potatoes and i have put them into water to heat but i shall fry them it must be nicer . a tip from another friend about mash a few years back . i did not have time to write y,day . we like cup of soup chicken /veg and sometimes add mash to it and have it as thick or less thick as required . its really nice for a snack and if 2 quite filling . ideal any time let alone if ... we make broth and its soooo delicious i could eat it in autumn/winter daily but need different meals of course and i dont want to get fed up with it as it is so lovely cheap and easy to make

This might be helpful to some people I’ve cooked a whole Christmas dinner and deep froze it incase of any power outages at Christmas And I’ve just bought a vacuum pack thingy to give some of my preps a little bit more shelf life incase of a shtf scenario The vac pack was only twenty quid and came with two extra plastic rolls I got it in the (not sure if I can mention the supermarkets name on here ) so I’ll say L instead It’s brilliant and easy to use

Newbie prepper here. Love your content. I'll be doing a lot of this in January. I call it peasant month. The big bucks get spent on family and overindulging during the Christmas period, and so in January I challenge myself to spend as little as possible. This time I'll be setting myself an SHTF-like challenge. Looking forward to it tbh.

Excellent video mate. Like how you introduced it as if SHTF scenario had happened. In 2012 while the kids where young i got them into prepping by making it fun etc. With the hype of the Mayan Calendar I decided to show them what a preppers xmas dinner might have looked like if things had gone tits up. Did a lot similar to what you've just done and they loved it.

Noice mate 😂 I've been wondering if tinned chicken was still around, so I looked it up. Brilliant 😊 None here, but I'm ordering it into my sisters. I'll add something here to assist those wanting a more Xmas flavour... ... use ghee as the butter. "Bake" those spuds in jarred duck fat, add dried spices and herbs to taste. Flash fry the chicken in the same pot as the spuds. Add dried onions to water overnight. Add them to the mash. Use reconstituted powdered milk to the mash, too. Also... SPROUTS. We need SPROUTS. Buy seeds, and keep them growing.😂 Just my two pennies.

@UKUrbanPrepper Lol. I thought so. But not so in Carmarthen. So I'm ordering others. I also sent an email to Pek Foods. I'm asking if I can buy direct. I would rather a years supply (104 tins, at once a week, 2 tins for 2 people) in one go. Once a week each is 2 tins But chicken twice a week is 208 tins. The idea is to actually have 18 months worth of supplies to accommodate a failed first harvest of what I intend to grow in the ground. 👍

Around 4 years back, I read an article that stated an open tin of ghee sat on a kitchen shelf for 8 years. When opened after 8 years, it was good to go. That was in the heat of India. Family did not have the finances to travel to the small home of a deceased relative. When they finally got there 8 years later, they found the home sealed and everything as it should be, including the opened tin of ghee.

@@sweeta17 Totally agree on the health issue as grain oils in general are particularly bad (I use nut-based oil - peanut - when I use oil at all) as I'm fully aware of the issues surrounding the subject. My preference is for lard though but on a long term storage basis you need to have stuff that (ideally) doesn't require freezing and equally has a long shelf life. Palm oil is usually decried due to the way its production harms natural environments (land clearance etc) but is otherwise no worse than oils in general. The fact that is is commonly supplied in TINS does, however, make it a good choice for SHTF situations.

@@kelly26b I agree. Idahoan's BEST flavor is "Baby Reds". Absolutely nothing (except water lol) needs to be added and they taste closest to freshly mashed potatoes.
