I often think on Cernan's trip back to Earth starting at whatever spot on the Moon he was standing at when he thought 'Time to go.'. There was the walk back to the lunar rover, the drive back to the lunar module, packing up and perhaps a rest. Then the launch of the upper stage up to meet the Apollo spacecraft, moving all the rocks between the lunar module and the spacecraft. The burn to send them back to Earth, the detachment of the service module and hitting the Earth's atmosphere with the heat shield pointing forward. Finally the parachute landing in the sea.

I don't know how this is the first time I've ever seen this footage and I am very disappointed it took me this long. I always expect it to be serious and heavy for some reason but, hearing and seeing them jump around singing like children that have finally reached the dream they've had since they were children was extremely wholesome & quite hilarious 😅

When I was a teen, I started to doubt if the Moon landings happened. As an adult, I learnt that my doubts were due for the lack of proper Scientific information about the Apollo program, Space and Rocket Engineering. I also blame NASA, for being so secretive with their missions, and their Team being so reluctant to share information with us the common folks. Not a surprise that "deniers" appear.
@godspeed7717 Жыл бұрын
In your case, your common sense decreases when you age.
@sailorman8668 Жыл бұрын
@Dougal Douglas Actually, this 'deep' dust expectation was before any pre-Apollo probes/rovers were sent to the moon. The data and information/pictures that these probes/rovers gathered, showed that the lunar surface wasn't that 'deep' at all. Accordingly, it was already known that the Apollo missions weren't going to encounter any issues with the moon's surface.
@sailorman8668 Жыл бұрын
@@godspeed7717 And yet, your 'common sense' is at such a low level that it enables you to think that the earth is actually flat? LOL. Just out of interest, what causes the flat earth to move in a circular path over the earth's surface and to then continually alter this path throughout the year to cause the seasons? Have you considered the incredible cost of going to the moon. The Apollo program cost in the region of $25b... 50 years ago ($200b now). Yes it would be a bit cheaper now, but when governments consider what to spend money on, going to a rock in space doesn't exactly make sense financially.
@bardsterfr Жыл бұрын
@@tonyt50 do you know what else doesn’t make sense financially? Spending those billions on useless war efforts that happen every three years. If we’re “dumping money down the drain” then it should at least be towards something cool
@tonyt50 Жыл бұрын
@@bardsterfr I would love to see more moon landings and 100% agree. But for governments it just doesnt make sense, there is political and financial gain in warfare, and that is more important to them.
@wanialamb8728Ай бұрын
@@tonyt50be cool to see people go back to the moon but at these times it's not worth it the govt would much rather put money into their people than to do research off planet. Back in those days it was mostly a space race to beath other countries to the moon.

A geologist, someone who knows what a rock looks like, went to the moon on Apollo 17, since astronauts on earlier moon missions had determined that the moon is made of rocks, not cheese.

@Dougal Douglas No it wasn't. He was letting Houston know because everyone was concerned about the surface texture and had no idea exactly how thick dusty or compressed the surface would be. Neil used pure instinct to land at the spot he did. With very little fuel left I might add. Michael Collins talks about this at great length in his autobiography.
